from the Steam community, paving the way for an upcoming release for this
recently proposed MMORPG homage to City of
Heroes/City of Villains. The game is still in pre-alpha testing, and details and
signups can be found on the Valance
Online website, and they are gearing up to release this soon via Steam early

trailer, and here's a bit on the game: "Valiance Online is a 'living world'

modes, eight maps, five beam-types, and seven frag animations. Here's
a video and here's

Windows 10: The Next Chapter
offers a presentation from Microsoft for Windows 10, the next version of their
operating system.
PC Gamer has news from the presentation that for the first year of release,
this will be offered as a free upgrade for owners of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1,
noting this will provide access to DirectX 12, a Windows 10 exclusive. There is
speculation that this will involve license fees after the first year, but this
has not yet been confirmed. Update: There are more details on the
Windows blog which seem to indicate this means free for the life of the
device.
SEGA announces that Creative Assembly's survival/horror game Alien: Isolation
has now sold over one million copies worldwide. "It has been fantastic to watch
the reviews come in and read of the reactions of players, hidden in the bowels
of Sevastopol Station, terrified to make the next move," said Creative Lead,
Alistair Hope. "We set out to make the Alien game we had always wanted to play,
and from these figures it seems we also succeeded in making the Alien game
another million wanted to play. We hope many more gamers enjoy Alien: Isolation
in 2015."
The
Bethesda Blog announces a March 17th launch date for ESO: Tamriel
Unlimited, confirming
suspicions
that a subscription-free model was in the works for The Elder Scrolls Online,
which was launched as a subscription-only MMORPG. This relaunch for Windows will
be followed by the game's release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on June 9th.
Existing subscribers and new players can also choose whether or not to subscribe
to
ESO Plus, a monthly microtransaction commitment. Here's a
new cinematic trailer
kicking off a four-part series, and here's word: In Tamriel Unlimited,
you’ll be able to purchase optional downloadable content, and the in-game Crown
Store will offer convenience and customization items. Already a subscriber?
You’ll become a member of
ESO Plus to receive monthly in-game benefits and a monthly allotment of
Crowns to spend in the store. Our team remains committed to providing a great
experience to all players, and you can expect continued, regular updates free of
charge in addition to our new store offerings. Update: Removed the
term "free-to-play" from the story, since it is not an accurate description of a
game you still have to purchase.
A
community manager post on the Diablo III forums says Blizzard believes it
has cleared up the "major lag" reported in Diablo III earlier
this week. Apparently this was the result of the
recent version 2.1.2 patch for the action/RPG sequel: Hey everyone! We
believe the latency issues many of you have experienced since the release of
patch 2.1.2 should now be resolved. However, if you continue to encounter
problems with high ping or in-game lag, please let us know.
Thanks so much for your helpful posts!
The
Roberts Space Industries website announces the Public Test Universe is now
available to all backers of Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium's space combat
game. Here's word: Get ready to join the Public Test Universe (PTU.)
During the lead up to Arena Commander 1.0, we gave a limited number of backers
access to what we call the PTU, a version of the game that offers experimental
versions of upcoming patches. Starting today, all Star Citizen backers have
access to the PTU and with it access to test a build of Arena Commander 1.0.1.
Please note that the PTU is not for the faint of heart: unlike standard Arena
Commander, you’re one of the first people testing a new build which can often be
unstable or otherwise non-functional. If you’re serious about helping us test
Star Citizen, accessing the PTU and reporting bugs on the forums is one of the
biggest services you can provide… but if you’re looking for a clean dogfight,
you may want to stick to the standard build. You can report bugs discovered in
the PTU
here, or provide feedback on the PTU itself
here.

Interactive tweets an image revealing development of Technomancer, a
new RPG from Mars War Logs and Bound by Flame developer Spiders. We should see
official details on this soon, as this was unveiled at a press event in France.
In the meantime, there's a write up of the unveiling
on GameWatcher, where they say this "seems like an attempt to smooth out
some of the rough edges from War Logs, fixing some of the game's clunkier
elements and adding in a few new features that should make adventuring a bit
more varied and interesting." Here's a bit more: You play as a rookie
technomancer tasked with finding and securing artifacts and technology from lost
Earth. Details on the main story were scarce, but a big part of it seems to
involve dealing with the revelation that the technomancers' strange magical
abilities are powered by mutation - mutants aren't popular on Mars to say the
least, and enemy factions who discover your secret will be rubbing their hands
in glee.
Quests are now more complex, branching affairs. There are six factions in the
game (the junk-collecting, trade focused Americans and the underhanded, sneaky
Thieves were mentioned at the event) and depending on how you choose to approach
a mission you might earn favour with one at the expense of another.
Also from "Le What's Next De Focus" event comes
this tweet
revealing development of Vampyr, a role-playing game in the works at
Dontnod Entertainment, the undead
developer of Remember Me. For now, word is: "With @DONTNOD_Ent and

Double Fine is a DOOM gameplay session featuring John
Romero, co-creator of the seminal first-person shooter (thanks
Shacknews via nin). In the clip The Romero plays the game and
discusses its history and the design philosophy behind some classic
levels. Here's word: Doom history enthusiast and Spacebase creator JP
LeBreton joins id Software co-founder John Romero as the two play though the
first episode of Doom, “Knee Deep in the Dead,” in its entirety. John Romero’s
run through each level turns up fresh and encyclopedic insight into how this
genre-defining title was designed and set the stage for first-person action
games for years to come.
This first part introduces us to JP and his long history with Doom before taking
a trip to John Romero's house to kick off the marathon play
session. Continue here to read the full story.
I woke up in the wee hours today with a bit of a tummy ache, hence the late
start, but I'm feeling better now. Weird, I was just contemplating health due to
an
LA Times article about the dangers of too much sitting. This says that even
those of us who attempt to get a good amount of daily activity are still at risk
for various maladies, and will live shorter lives thanks to our sedentary ways.
I wonder if I could really work at one of those standing desks? You can probably
get used to anything, though that wouldn't be ideal for gaming. I guess the best
approach would be a treadmill desk like the agent in Showtime's (fantastic)
Episodes, but that's pretty ambitious.
