The
Roberts Space Industries website announces the release of version 1.0 of the
Arena Commander module for Star Citizen, news accompanied by the
release of a
new Arena Commander manual and sales of some new ships for Cloud Imperium's
space combat game. Here's word on what this means: As you know, the team
has been working very hard to release Arena Commander today and we’re especially
excited to publish this patch before our Holiday break. We would have ideally
liked another 4-5 days of internal stress testing and polish but with everyone
looking forward to some well-earned time off I didn’t want to eat into people’s
break. That said, being cognizant of the fact that the upcoming holidays are a
time when everyone (myself included) looks forward to playing their favorite
games we wanted to make sure that we released Arena Commander 1.0 for all our
backers to enjoy over the holidays. With that in mind, I’ve opted to push
today’s build of Arena Commander 1.0 to all of our backers today. So please,
enjoy this significant update, give us your feedback, and we’ll come back in the
New Year ready to continue polishing Arena Commander and developing the BDSSE!
I would like to stress that today’s release of Arena Commander 1.0 is a
beginning, not an ending. This milestone does not denote the completion of Arena
Commander, it kicks off an even more significant phase of its development. With
this update, we’ve added a significant number of ships, items, missiles, and
systems which means more interconnected systems, more servers to stress and more
bugs to squash. These future changes won’t be limited to fixing technical
glitches and balance issues.
Some elements, like the initial Avenger and Cutlass, will be converted to the
new modular ship component system, but we wanted long-waiting owners to get an
early look at their ships. So I encourage you to experience everything we’ve
added to Arena Commander 1.0, but also to know that much, much more is in the
works!
A
Q&A on GamesIndustry.biz we missed last week talks to Valentine Yeltyshev,
who informs them that GSC Game World is back in operation, following a period
where the Ukrainian developer was closed (thanks
GameSpot). They learn the story behind the studios fall and rise, and get
word that they are working on an "old-fashioned, full price game," though they
don't offer any details on what it is about. They get the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
developer's take on West Games' claim to a pedigree from the original
game: "I don't really know enough about them, but the story is quite
funny. These guys were basically promoting themselves as being the STALKER team,
that they were working on STALKER, but that's not true. When we were working on
STALKER 2, we were also planning on releasing a browser game based on STALKER so
we could keep the audience engaged until released.
"That project was never finished. There were mistakes. But the guys at West
Games, that was the STALKER project they were working on - a flash game. So when
they promoted themselves as having worked on STALKER, I was quite surprised. We
would definitely win the legal action against them, but we won't start it. They
used a lot of the ideas from STALKER... I don't know what they were thinking,
starting that. I haven't heard from them for quite a while."
The Sims website
announces plans to release a game pack called The Outdoor Retreat for The Sims 4
next month, adding the chance to enjoy the great outdoors in the lifestyle
simulation (thanks
SlashGear via
HARDOCP). This might raise the question "what is a game pack," but they are
a step ahead of us, providing a handy explanation embedding within the
announcement: I have been working with members of The Sims 4 team on
something fun. I am excited to share it with you all, as I know it’s going to
allow you to tell even more unique and wonderful stories with your Sims.
Two words. Game Pack. What is a Game Pack you ask? Game Packs are unique to The
Sims 4. Our first Game Pack - The Sims 4 Outdoor Retreat - will be coming out in
January 2015, but before we talk about that, let’s talk about what a Game Pack
is.
About nine years ago, during The Sims 2 days, we introduced Stuff Packs to The
Sims franchise to change up the way you could customize your Sim stories. Stuff
Packs were focused on a specific theme and included clothing, hairstyles,
furniture and décor.
For The Sims 4, we wanted to continue that tradition while giving you even MORE
opportunities to craft the stories you want, since a Game Pack provides new
gameplay features, new objects and new clothing based around one central theme.
Being able to expand your gameplay through a Game Pack allows us to give you
some of the things you’ve been asking for and it’s something we are really
excited about.
So, what can you expect from the first Game Pack in early 2015? Well, you’re
going to take your Sims to Granite Falls to visit and explore an all-new
destination. The woods are packed with gameplay possibilities. Campfire songs,
weenie roasts and bear costumes, oh my!
So there’s a little tasty news to chew on, keep an eye out for more!

Off to a late start here today as this morning somehow involved a grocery
shopping session that seemed to be impossible to escape. Happy winter, as today
marks the Solstice in the northern hemisphere! Happy summer to those down under,
and here's hoping the surfing is good. On the bright side (pun intended), I'm
looking forward more daylight as the days go on... sundown at 4:30 pm is a total
bummer.
