Steam News announces

is out of early access and the survival RPG is now officially available: Dead
State is Now Available on Steam after a successful Early Access period!
Dead State is a narrative-driven survival RPG set at the dawn of the undead

Suikoden, Dead State combines strategic, turn-based combat with base building
mechanics, character creation, and social management.
Dead State is set in central Texas at the collapse of civilization and the dawn
of the undead apocalypse.

survivors together, fortify a shelter, scout for food and supplies, negotiate
with or defend against other factions, and maintain order inside the shelter as
humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. Dead State is a full-fledged RPG
featuring base building and management, turn-based tactical combat, and reactive
story and dialogue with an emphasis on survival at any cost.

A post to the
Eidos Montreal blog offers details on the Dawn engine, a variant on IO
Interactive's Glacier 2 engine being developed to power next-generation Deus
Ex games (thanks Chris). They offer a screenshot to show off what they've
achieved, saying this is just a preliminary look. They also clarify
their reference to the
Deus Ex Universe does not mean they have plans for an MMOG based on the
cyberpunk RPG series: As you can imagine, the Dawn Engine will form the
cornerstone for all Deus Ex Universe projects at Eidos-Montréal. Some of you
have had concerns that “Universe” meant “MMO”. Rest assured, it does not.
Deus Ex Universe is the name we are giving to the fictional world and the rich
lore we are creating for it, which will of course include core games, as well as
any other projects that will help bring the world of Deus Ex to life. We won’t
go into too much detail for now, but what we envision is for our projects to
have meaningful ties to one another, in order for them to strengthen and deepen
your experience within this Universe.

2K announces the formation of Hangar 13, a new development studio in the San
Francisco area working on "an unannounced next-generation title," saying they
will "lead the charge in creating some of the most memorable AAA experiences of
this generation." This effort will be lead by Haden Blackman, who helped launch
titles such as Knights of the Old Republic and The Force Unleashed during his
days at LucasArts. "At Hangar 13, our mantra is ‘Every player story is unique’,"
said Blackman. "Our ambition is to create next-generation games that allow
players to shape their own experiences, from the moment-to-moment gameplay, to
the long-term impact on the world, characters and narrative. To realize this
goal, we’re building proprietary technology and assembling a core team
passionate about delivering mature experiences loaded with meaningful choices."
The Hangar 13 website is now online,
though there's not much there at the moment. More detail can be found in an
interview with Blackman on Gamasutra, though this is still mostly about the
broad strokes.
The
Borderlands website announces The Holodome Onslaught, a DLC pack
coming to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on December 16th, bringing new
content to the RPG/shooter and raises the level-cap to 60, saying this will be
accompanied by a free Ultimate Vault Hunter upgrade that adds a third
playthrough option for all owners of the game. Here's word: Borderlands:
The Pre-Sequel’s second batch of add-on content, the Ultimate Vault Hunter
Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught, is coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and
Steam on December 16th alongside a free update that adds a third playthrough for
everyone enjoying the game!
This add-on pack features all-new narrative content including appearances from
veteran Vault Hunters Gaige and Axton, who recently returned to the Crimson
Raiders HQ. While they were gone on a mission, they missed out on the events of
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and ask Athena to recount the story. Since they’re
not the most patient badass Vault Hunters on Pandora, they just want an
abbreviated version – only the juicy, violent stuff.
As Athena tells the tale, you’ll play through The Holodome Onslaught, a new
challenge arena where you’ll fight wave after wave of foes, including some of
The Pre-Sequel’s most memorable badasses as well as several new enemies. You’ll
also be able to earn new weapons, new class mods, and some radical new heads and
skins.
As bonus content, this add-on pack also includes the Ultimate Vault Hunter
Upgrade Pack, which raises the level cap to 60, giving each of your characters
10 new levels, plus 10 new skill points to earn!
If you’ve already picked up the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Season Pass, the
Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught is included, but for
players that haven’t, the pack will also be sold on its own for $9.99. The
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Season Pass is available for $29.99 and grants
access to all four add-on content packs – a $39.96 value! – as they become
available on Xbox Live, PSN, Windows PC, Mac and Linux. It also includes the
previously-released Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack, which makes Borderlands 2’s
maniacal antagonist playable for the first time (or at least someone who looks
and sounds an awful lot like him). While each add-on content pack will be
available for sale individually, the Season Pass offers all four packs for just
about the price of three!
Additionally, all Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel players will receive a free patch
next week that adds a third playthrough, Ultimate Vault Hunter mode, which is
more difficult and adds the ability to reset campaign progress at any time, as
well as enemies scaling up to your current level. Additional patch notes will be
available closer to release at support.gearbox.com.
Since Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel launched on October 14th, the teams at Gearbox
and 2K Australia have continued to work hard on supporting the game with
post-launch content. Current plans for future content are to include one more
playable character as well as a new campaign, so look out for more updates in
the months ahead.
Good luck in the Holodome!
Daedalic Entertainment announces FIRE, a comedic adventure game set
during the stone age coming to Windows and OS X on January 6th with an iPad
release to follow. This is available for pre-purchase
on Steam for 10% off, and
the page includes screenshots and trailers to give a look at what to expect.
Here's word: FIRE uses an intuitive game design to tell a story without
words! By following the adventures of Ungh the Neanderthal, players will have to
master the trickiest task of the Stone Age… finding fire.
As Ungh, it’s up to you to explore the colorful world of FIRE and to solve all
puzzles in the most creative ways possible. Always helpful are the quirky
creatures of this unique Stone Age setting: why not using a mammoth and its
trunk to shoot a coconut? Be it mammoths, bats or dinosaurs – FIRE’s colorful
Stone Age world is inhabited by all kinds of useful and entertaining wildlife.
A key part of the story, of course, is the slightly clumsy (yet highly comedic)
Neanderthal Ungh, who’s also our hero. Ungh starts out as you’d expect – a bit
dopey and very unlucky, and unfortunately, he’s let his village’s bonfire burn
out during his watch. Now he has to get a new flame, which sets him on a quest
to explore every corner of his prehistoric world. Be it a jungle, veldt or the
inside of a volcano – no place is safe from Ungh.
The urge to explore has no limits in FIRE -- a click on every object triggers a
reaction from Ungh or his surroundings – and with a bit of logic players can get
closer to the puzzle’s solution. For example, some locations can be visited at
day and night – a click on the sun or the moon is enough to change the time of
the day, which not only influences the lighting conditions, but also the
behavior of the creatures. Diurnal monsters will sleep at night, others will
wake up or show themselves only when it’s dark. Taking the time of day into
account is just one of the many keys to making the most of Ungh’s adventures!
FIRE will be available worldwide on January 6th, 2014 for PC and Mac for
9.99US$/ 9.99€/ 7.99£/ 399 RUR on all major online stores.

The
Kickstarter page for Rocket Ranger Reloaded now offers a playable
demo for Cinemaware's proposed relaunch of their 1980s Amiga game. This is a
timely release, as the crowdfunding campaign is about halfway done, and they
have collected pledges for about half their proposed budget.
The Kickstarter update on the release is for backers only, but we have word
that: "The demo features an exciting, pulse-pounding air combat mission against
Nazi Zeppelin dreadnoughts, Messerschmitt fighter planes and even top-secret,
futuristic Nazi weapons!"
A new kick off trailer
offers a look at Blood Bowl 2, the upcoming sequel which combines the strategy
of tackle football with the savagery of Warhammer. They take the opportunity to
announce that the game is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in the spring
alongside the Windows release. Here's word: "Blood Bowl 2 is even more ambitious
than its predecessor in all aspects of the game, with numerous extra features
and the highest production values. Its brand new graphics engine has been
specially developed for this sequel showcasing improved visuals, sound, and
animation. This video brings to the spotlight the authentic Blood Bowl
experience: the animations, the dynamic cameras enhancing the brutal atmosphere
of the matches, the "Cabalvision" identity and the hilarious commenting duo, Jim
Johnson and Bob Bifford." Continue here to read the full story.
One of the lessons I learned living with Hudson the wonder dog is what being
attacked by a skunk smells like, as my late, great companion's fearless
aggression towards such critters managed to get her sprayed repeatedly over the
years. The takeaway was that the vaguely sweet/pungent smell one occasionally
encounters on the road is from a skunk that was run over, and this is actually
somewhat pleasant compared with the smell of having been sprayed directly, which
is pretty horrible. A couple of weeks ago I encountered a variation on this...
the smell had the vague distant quality of a run-over skunk, but had the sharp
nauseous element of a direct attack. This happened again this week, and I
finally put together that this was actually the Gunnar man, and the reason it
smelled so far off is because once the skunk turned on him, he must have chose
discretion over valor, getting a trace of stink during his escape. Definitely a
better option from my perspective than trying to wash away that stench.
Oh yeah... make your
football
picks, though you can probably take a week off and still stay ahead of me.
