Archived News:
Avalanche Studios officially announces Just Cause 3, a third installment in
the open-world action series coming to Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 next
year. This project has was previously hinted at through
a domain registration and a
possible
screenshot leak followed by
an official statement,
but now it is confirmed. "We’ve been waiting for this moment ever since Just
Cause 2 was released," said Christofer Sundberg, founder and Chief Creative
Officer at Avalanche Studios. "This is the culmination of a decade’s worth of
open-world evolution and innovation. In JUST CAUSE 3, we’ve sent Rico to a
beautiful Mediterranean archipelago. He is of course bringing his Grapple and
Parachute, both with game-changing upgrades, as well as the brand new Wingsuit.
JUST CAUSE 3 truly represents the next generation of chaotic sandbox fun, and we
can’t wait to show you more next year."
GameInformer.com reveals this as the cover story of their December print
issue, promising more details as part of their coverage. They
also have a follow-up to concerns that this will be a free-to-play game with
microtransactions, "It will be distributed as a retail box and digital
download," says Avalanche chief creative officer Christofer Sundberg. "It is not
a Free To Play game. It does not feature in-game micro transactions." Here's
Game Informer's coverage
trailer and what they have about the game for now: We got the chance
to be the first people outside of the studio to play not just 10 or 20 minutes,
but several hours of the game, set in a fictional Mediterranean archipelago. The
time flew by as we tried out the vastly improved parachute and grapple
mechanics, terrorized the latest dictator’s well-defended bases, and soared
through the sky with the all-new wingsuit. Just Cause has never played this
smoothly, and as you’ll see in the cover story launching digitally today, it’s
never looked this good. Continue here to read the full story.

cunning Super Villains must unite and journey to different Lantern Worlds to
stop him.

The embargo on reviews for Assassin's Creed Unity is over, so evaluations of the
stealth/action sequel are now online, as is a related
Consumerist editorial on "3 Reasons Why Video Game Review Embargoes Are
Particularly Anti-Consumer."
Metacritic
currently lists a grand total of zero official reviews for the Windows edition
because consoles, so you'll have to look to the
PlayStation 4 Reviews (currently an 81 metascore) and
Xbox One
Reviews (currently a 76 metascore) for answers at this time. Both the
console and PC editions of the game have very low user scores, as it seems to
suffer
performance issues on all platforms, and there are a bunch of threads about
this in the Steam forums and
the
Assassin's Creed forums. We also see
word on a day one patch which may impact this, but the only patch notes
we've been able to find
are in
German.
The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics clear up the confusion we expressed earlier about release
plans for DCS Su-27, saying the new aircraft for
DCS World "is now available for download via in-game Model Manager and as (a)
separate module from the DCS e-shop," adding a reminder that this is a free
update to owners of Flaming Cliffs 3. Here's word: The Su-27, NATO
codename Flanker, is one of the pillars of modern-day Russian combat aviation.
Built to counter the American F-15 Eagle, the Flanker is a twin-engine,
supersonic, highly maneuverable air superiority fighter. The Flanker is equally
capable of engaging targets well beyond visual range as it is in a dogfight
given its amazing slow speed and high angle attack maneuverability. Using its
radar and stealthy infrared search and track system, the Flanker can employ a
wide array of radar and infrared guided missiles. The Flanker also includes a
helmet-mounted sight that allows you to simply look at a target to lock it up!
In addition to its powerful air-to-air capabilities, the Flanker can also be
armed with bombs and unguided rockets to fulfill a secondary ground attack role.
Su-27 for DCS World focuses on ease of use without complicated cockpit
interaction, significantly reducing the learning curve. As such, Su-27 for DCS
World features keyboard and joystick cockpit commands with a focus on the most
mission critical of cockpit systems. Continue here to read the full story.

Today is the release date for
Assassin's Creed Unity for Windows and consoles, and strangely also the
release date for console versions of
Assassin's Creed Rogue, though the PC edition of that one is not due until
next year. The
Assassin's Creed website announces plans to celebrate the release of both
games on their new Assassin's
Creed Twitch Channel beginning at 11:45 EST (actually EDT) today. Here's
word on the game: Paris, 1789 – The French Revolution turns a
once-magnificent city into a place of terror and chaos. Its cobblestone streets
run red with the blood of commoners who dared to rise up against the oppressive
aristocracy.
As the nation tears itself apart, a young man named Arno will embark on an
extraordinary journey to expose the true powers behind the Revolution. His
pursuit will throw him into the middle of a ruthless struggle for the fate of a
nation, and transform him into a true Master Assassin.
In addition to an epic single-player campaign, join with up to three friends
online and experience the open world of 18th-century Paris. Pull ambitious
heists and take part in unique narrative-driven missions designed exclusively
for co-op play. Sabotage an execution. Protect an emperor. Assassinate a Templar
agent. Victory won’t be easy; you and your lethal band must rely on
communication, coordination, and diverse skills to accomplish your missions,
then vanish into the shadows.
The
GeForce website offers an Assassin's Creed Unity Graphics & Performance
Guide with word on NVIDIA support for advanced graphics features in the Windows
edition of the new Assassin's Creed game. They discuss the Gameworks features
shown off in this previously
released video and also outline plans to enhance this support with an
upcoming update adding GeometryWorks DirectX 11 Advanced Tessellation
technology: A post-release update will introduce gamers to our
GeometryWorks DirectX 11 Advanced Tessellation technology, which enables
developers to quickly and easily generate tessellation displacement maps from
pre-existing assets, and to efficiently integrate tessellation rendering into
their engines with minimal work. Furthermore, our tessellation tech comes
pre-packaged with adaptive tessellation factor calculation and frustum culling,
making widescale usage a reality in open-world games like Unity.
In Unity, GeometryWorks is being used to add tessellation to roof shingles, roof
tiles, cobblestones, brick roads and paths, archways, statues, architecture, and
much, much more. And because this tessellation is real geometric detail, as
opposed to simulated detail from bump mapping or normal mapping, tessellated
detail in Unity is accurately shadowed by NVIDIA HBAO+ and NVIDIA PCSS,
significantly improving image quality. Continue here to read the full story.
2K Games and Gearbox Software announce the release of the Handsome Jack
Doppelganger Pack, the first DLC for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel,
their first-person shooter prequel. Here's word: 2K and Gearbox Software
announced today that the first add-on content pack for Borderlands®: The
Pre-Sequel™, Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack*, is now available** for the
PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 games and entertainment
system from Microsoft, and Windows PC. The Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack
features a fifth playable character for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, adding
hours of shoot ‘n’ loot action to Pandora’s moon. Fans will become the maniacal
tyrant from Borderlands 2, or at least his trusted body double, also known as
Jack the Doppelganger. For the first time, players will take advantage of
Handsome Jack’s charming good looks to distract and fight enemies or cut them
down with witty banter.
“The Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack adds hours of gravity-defying mayhem and is
just the first of four upcoming add-on content packs.”
“With Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, we’re continuing the Borderlands franchise’s
tradition of delivering high quality add-on content and supporting the game well
after it launches,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “The Handsome Jack
Doppelganger Pack adds hours of gravity-defying mayhem and is just the first of
four upcoming add-on content packs.”
The Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack is the first of four add-on content packs
for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and is included in the Borderlands: The
Pre-Sequel Season Pass* – a $39.96 value for only $29.99. Each add-on content
pack will also be available individually for $9.99. The Borderlands: The
Pre-Sequel Season Pass grants access to download all four of the planned add-on
content packs as they become commercially available on the PlayStation®Network,
Xbox Live online entertainment network from Microsoft, Windows PC, Mac and
Linux.
A Community Patch
is now available for System Shock 2 from
Systemshock.org, which was released
over a week ago as a further community effort at addressing existing issues in
the RPG sequel beyond the previous
Anomalies,
Discrepancies, and outright Bugs mod (thanks Gamer's Hell via
rpg codex). This is an
unofficial patch obviously not connected with original developers
Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios, which are both now defunct. Here's
word on what this does: SCP is intended to serve as an unofficial patch
for System Shock 2 that delivers an authentic but also highly polished SS2
gameplay experience—hopefully approximating the form SS2 would have taken if
Irrational had had a few more months to work on it before release. All changes
have been made with the intent of respecting Irrational’s original vision. The
other goal of SCP is to upgrade SS2 to take advantage of the enhanced graphical
features of the NewDark engine in those ways that are beyond the means of
standalone mods.
The guiding principle for SCP has been that SS2’s gameplay is fine as-is, and
that its greatest strength is immersion—its ability to make players feel like
they’re really trapped on board the Von Braun with all its horrors. So while
we’ve tweaked game systems and made adjustments to the level geometry, the goal
hasn’t been balancing gameplay, but rather eliminating those things that don’t
make sense to the point that they take you out of the game. Anything illogical,
gamey, or otherwise immersion-breaking, we’ve tried to correct.
Google
Play now offers ExaGear RPG, an app which allows PC RPGs to be played on
Android devices via emulation. This requires ownership of the games being
emulated, and while the app is free to use for three days upon installation,
playing supported games after that will also require purchase of a separate
"controls package" for each game. Here's word on how this works: ExaGear RPG is an emulator for Android which allows you to run PC games on
Android devices. ExaGear RPG is the version of ExaGear Mobile with customization
of controls for RPG games. NOTE that no games are included in this application
and this application does not work without your own PC game files!
FEATURES
Current controls are customized and adapted for:
- Fallout 1, 2 (controls ‘Ferrum’ are recommended)
- Might and Magic VI, VII, VIII (controls
‘Magnesium’ are recommended)
The list of tested and adapted games will increase.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
- NO GAMES ARE INCLUDED IN THIS APP! YOU HAVE TO
OBTAIN YOUR LICENSED COPIES OF PC GAMES IN A LEGAL MANNER.
- EMULATOR IS FREE TO USE FOR THREE DAYS AFTER
INSTALLATION. AFTER THAT PERIOD IN ORDER TO CONTINUE YOU SHOULD CHOOSE
CONTROLS PACKAGE AND BUY IT. EACH CONTROLS PACKAGE IS PAID SEPARATELY!
This trailer shows
off the Su-27, a new aircraft coming to DCS World, Digital Combat Simulator's
free-to-play aerial battleground (thanks Hank). It was announced
last month that this would begin beta testing
on November 15th, though the accompanying description of the video says it was
released yesterday (it's probably not out yet, as it's not reflected on
the DCS website).
Here's a rundown on the release: Key Features of the Su-27 for DCS World:
A professional level flight model provides unmatched flight physics that allow
you to truly feel what it's like to fly this amazing aircraft. A true model of
the Su-27 flight control system that allows you to perform the “cobra” and other
“out of the envelope” manoeuvres. Updated Head Down Display (HDD) with more
realistic data link and navigation modes. Highly detailed,
six-degrees-of-freedom (6 DOF) cockpit. Accurate Su-27 Flanker model, squadron
markings, and weapons. New instant action, single missions and interactive
training missions. Battle the F-15C in head-to-head. Continue here to read the full story.
Today is Veterans Day here in the U.S., an extension of the armistice that ended
World War I on November 11, 1918. Here's a solemn salute to the sacrifices of soldiers,
and a heartfelt hope that we are progressing towards a time when fewer such
sacrifices occur.
