Game Awards 2014 is a new game awards
show to take place on December 5th in Las Vegas. It seems these are looking to fill the gap
left by Spike's VGX Awards, which have
not been announced for this year, as they are produced by Geoff Keighley, who
was executive producer of VGX. They have an advisory board populated by the
major publishers, and according to Keighley, "the entire
game industry" has rallied behind this: Today I'm proud to announce The
Game Awards 2014, a new show that will be coming in just one month's time. After
spending over two decades working in games media, this year I'm creating a new
independent celebration for our industry.
Starting out on a new path is never easy, but I'm deeply humbled to have the
entire game industry rally behind this new celebration. In the coming days and
weeks there will be much more to tell you about what's planned for December 5 at
the AXIS Theater in Las Vegas, including information on the awards, the world
premieres and much more.
More than ever our industry -- the fans, the developers and the media -- need to
unite and show the world the power of games. I look forward to celebrating with
you on December 5, whether you join us in person in Las Vegas or online.
Trendy Entertainment announces that early access to Dungeon Defenders II
will begin on December 5th, in conjunction with the game awards mentioned in the
story above, offering a first crack at the upcoming tower
defense/action/RPG sequel. Here's
a new trailer
celebrating the news, and here's word on what to expect: With hundreds of
hours of gameplay already developed, players that purchase the game in Early
Access will get access to a pre-alpha build of Dungeon Defenders II and be able
to play the entire first region of the game with the franchise’s four iconic
heroes. “This past year we’ve spent most of our time innovating and improving
upon the core Action Tower Defense gameplay Dungeon Defenders is famous for,
working with our Defense Council to create something fans both new and old will
enjoy,” said Brad Logston, Senior Producer of the Dungeon Defenders franchise.
“The most exciting thing for us? The feedback we’ve received has been
overwhelmingly positive, with some saying we’ve reached a quality bar above what
they expect from an Early Access game. This has meant so much to us, and as we
work past pre-alpha, we’re eager for new players to join us to help make the
best Dungeon Defenders game possible."
In Dungeon Defenders II, the land of Etheria has been invaded by the Old Ones
and players must rally, alone or with friends, to push them back! With a host of
new defenses, features and loot protecting Etheria has never been more fun than
in this Action Tower Defense adventure.
Dungeon Defenders II is currently in development for PC, Mac, and Linux. The PC
versions will launch on Early Access on Steam on December 5, 2014 as a premium
experience. In the future Trendy plans to make the entire Dungeon Defenders 2
experience free, supported by ethical in-game purchases. Continue here to read the full story.

A
Far Cry 4 Special Pubcast Happy Hour on IGN chats with Alex Hutchinson about
Far Cry 4 and related matters.
CVG notes that one thing that comes out of the conversation is that there
are no plans at this time for a direct sequel to Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon,
the well-received 80s send-up. The good news is they do have hopes that they can
provide a new release with the same element of surprise. "That's was what was
cool about [Blood Dragon], it was surprising," he explains. "It was a great use
of the Far Cry 3 base, and had an awesome soundtrack. But no, you won't get
another one of those. But hopefully we'll be able to surprise you with something
just as much."
Shrapnel Games announces they will release Approaching Infinity on
December 15th for Windows and OS X, saying Ibology's sandbox roguelike should go
gold in two weeks. Those interested in the game can still get a discount by
preordering this month, while those still on the fence can check out a playable
demo for either system. Both the demos and the preorder links can be found
on this page,
along with the following description: Approaching Infinity is a science
fiction rogue-like game of infinite intergalactic exploration and adventure. It
is a game of stellar exploration, planetary investigation, starship battles,
diplomacy, crafting, commodity trading, and much, much more, all set in a
totally procedurally generated infinite universe. In layman's terms this means
that with each game an entirely new universe is created, allowing for unlimited
replayability.
While rogue-like games are not true role-playing games they do focus on a player
generated character, and in Approaching Infinity that character is the starship
captain and his (or her) starship. Each starship has its initial strengths and
weaknesses, but are upgradable with new and superior components as the captain's
career unfolds. Of course no captain ever got to where they were without their
Scotty to squeeze out a few more warp factors or Jayne to control planetside
disagreements. As the game progresses officers with special skills can join your
crew, each contributing to the successes of your adventures. And if they're not
contributing there are ways to deal with a bad crew, from firing to letting them
lead an away team on a lava world polluted with poison gas and hostile
critters.
Indie developer Digital Entertainment now offers early access to
APOLLO4X, a science fiction 4X strategy
game for Windows, OS X, and Linux. The early access version can be purchased
through
GamersGate, the etailer unconnected with #Gamergate, and
they are also hoping to get the game onto Steam through
a
Greenlight campaign. You can get a look at the game through some tutorial
videos on this page,
and here's a description: Apollo4X provides a refreshing departure from
the classic 4X “Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate” and “food, production
research” formulas. Emphasis is on trade management, calculated growth and
internal development rather than incentivizing reckless geographic expansion.
“The 4X genre has had tremendous growth”, said Joseph Young, the game’s designer
and Creative Director. “Our game creates a new formula for 4X gameplay. We have
listened to what the gamer community desires, and we will give them what they
want with refreshing approach to the genre.”
Football Manager 2015 tops the
PC Top 30 chart on GFK Chart-Track of bestselling games in the U.K. last
week. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare debuts at number three, and there's
also a new entry at number 18, where World of Truck parks itself. The new
Call of Duty game lands at number one on the
all platforms chart, where Football Manager 2015 enters in the third spot.
Here's this week's summary:
EA’s 6 week run with ‘FIFA 15’ is over as Activision Blizzard take the
title with ‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’.
The latest in the series convincingly beats the week 1 number of 2013’s ‘Call of
Duty: Ghosts’ despite being the 5th biggest launch in the Call of Duty series as
a whole. By contrast however three of this year’s biggest week 1 titles have
been First Person Shooters (Titanfall, Destiny & Wolfenstein). Advanced
Warfare’s week 1 total beats the combined week 1 sales of those 3 by almost 14%.
‘FIFA 15’ (-20%) moves down to No2 following its unbroken run at the top since
release. It stays way ahead of two Sega titles one of them a new entry at No3 in
the form of ‘Football Manager 2015’ for PC. The second is ‘Alien: Isolation’
(+120%) which climbs to its second highest position since launch 5 weeks ago.
Strong sales spurred by retailer promotions see it climb to No4.
‘Destiny’ (+3%) climbs a spot to No5 ahead of ‘Minecraft: Playstation Edition’
(-41%) which drops 3 places to No6. ‘Skylanders Trap Team’ (+6%) continues its
week on week climb up to No7. Last week’s debutant and Xbox One exclusive title
‘Sunset Overdrive’ (-61%) is down to No8 ahead of ‘The Evil Within’ (-44%) which
slides to No9. There is no change at No10 as ‘Minecraft: Xbox Edition’ (+9%) is
a non-mover. Outside the Top 10 ‘Disney Infinity 2.0’ (+10%) adds new Disney
Originals to its roster of Starter Packs although the title remains at No12
despite the boost in sales.
