Fallout: Shadow of Boston TM a Hoax

Bethesda Softworks tweets that today's report of a German trademark filing for Fallout: Shadow of Boston is some sort of hoax, as they did not apply for it, in spite of it carrying their name. Word is: "The German trademark filing that's making the rounds is a hoax. This didn't come from our offices."

Steamships Ahoy - Magic 2015 - Garruk's Revenge

The new Garruk's Revenge expansion is now available on Steam with new content for Magic 2015 - Duels of the Planeswalkers, the virtual card-based strategy sequel. The expansion also represents a fundamental change to the game, as now all cards can be earned by playing. Here's word:

Garruk's Revenge puts the fate of Garruk Wildspeaker, the deadliest hunter in the Multiverse, in players' hands. With four new Campaign levels and an expanded Explore level, players take on the role of Garruk, using his deck to battle their way through challenging foes. With every victory, Garruk's deck strengthens, becoming more and more corrupt.

The Expansion features a collection of fan-favorite cards from the Shards of Alara block, which players unlock to later modify their own deck creations as they hunt their prey across the planes of the Multiverse.

Along with the release of Garruk's Revenge, all cards available to players in the original Magic 2015 campaign, Hunt Bigger Game, and the Expansion are now entirely earnable through gameplay.

Combat Mission: Black Sea Announced

Battlefront.com announces Combat Mission: Black Sea, a next installment in the Combat Mission series based on a near-future conflict between NATO and Russia in Ukraine. This is coming soon to Windows and OS X, and preorders are now underway, carrying a $10.00 discount. Here's the scoop:

Combat Mission: Black Sea is a military simulation depicting a fictional 2017 conflict between NATO and Russia in Ukraine. Following the events in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine in 2014, the Kiev government and Russia continue to clash over the status of the contested regions. This culminates several years later in a dramatic announcement by Ukraine that they will be joining NATO and the EU. Tensions explode as Russia perceives a direct threat to Russian citizens and deploy troops to the Ukrainian border again, while Western governments, welcoming a chance to expand NATO and EU influence eastward, mobilize as well. The escalation continues until the summer of 2017, when a large firefight erupts between Ukrainian and Russian troops in the Donetsk region. The next day fighting flares up on the border, and on a dark early morning in June 2017, pre-positioned Russian and NATO forces roll forward into Ukraine.

Assassin's Creed Unity Trailer

UbiBlog celebrates the imminent release of Assassin's Creed Unity with a new Unity 101 trailer with a primer on the stealthy assassination sequel. Word is: "Assassin’s Creed Unity has been reimagined from the ground up to bring you the most exciting and immersive Assassin’s Creed experience ever. From parkour, combat, and stealth in the huge interactive city of Paris to Arno and other key players, this trailer will tell you everything you need to know about the newest chapter in the Assassin’s Creed saga, including an Assassin’s Creed first: four-player co-op." With the game expected in North America on Tuesday, they also highlight five things to look out for:

1) With 7 diverse districts, a near 1:1 scale, fully detailed interiors and the possibility of up to 5,000 NPCs on screen at a time, Assassin’s Creed Unity’s Paris promises to be the most immersive and systemic setting to date.

2) For the first time, you will be able to craft the perfect Assassin to suit your playstyle. From your clothing and weapons to your skills, this Assassin will be unique to you. The Arno you create will then be carried over into co-op for all your friends to admire.

3) Make use of the group skills when you’re trying out the co-op. Become a team healer or ammo supplier and help out your comrades. Everyone benefits from these perks. Create a balanced team to successfully take on the narrative-driven Brotherhood missions, the endlessly replayable Heist missions, or even just the free-roaming exploration of Paris.

4) Historical figures like Napoleon, the Marquis de Sade, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and Robespierre all play roles in Assassin’s Creed Unity. Some will be friends, some will be foes, but all will be more realistic than any characters seen before in Assassin’s Creed, thanks to the power of the Anvil engine’s character design and motion capture.

5) We recently revealed the new time anomaly feature in Assassin’s Creed Unity, though we provided very little information as to what exactly it is. Take a leap of faith into an unstable time anomaly and face Paris in a different time period – like the German occupation of Paris during World War II.

Fallout: Shadow of Boston German TM [Updated]

This website has a listing for a community trademark filing in Germany from Bethesda Softworks for Fallout: Shadow of Boston, as computer game software title. There's no corresponding entry in the United States Patent and Trademark Office database at this time, but this can still provide fuel for speculation about a possible next installment in the post-apocalyptic RPG series. Thanks NeoGAF via DSOGaming. Update: Bethesda tweets this is a fake, saying: "The German trademark filing that's making the rounds is a hoax. This didn't come from our offices."

Microtransaction Hints in Leaked Just Cause 3 Screenshots?

There are four screenshots on Xbox Underground allegedly leaked from a debug console build of Just Cause 3, a third installment in Avalanche Studios' open-world action series. Just Cause 3 has not been officially announced, but Avalanche did register a domain for the title earlier this year). One of the leaked shots shows a "press Y to buy more" prompt that has raised concerns that the eventual game will include microtransactions. Eurogamer.net followed up on this by getting an unidentified "source close to the project" to confirm that this shows off a "Black Market" where items could be imported, but Eurogamer adds that a plan to release the PC version as a free-to-play game was scrapped somewhere along the way, so it's not clear if any F2P-style features will actually be included.

Arma 3 Helicopters DLC Released

Bohemia Interactive has released the Helicopters DLC for Arma 3, which is the second premium pack for the military shooter sequel. Word is: "Featuring the highly detailed CH-67 Huron and Mi-290 Taru, the DLC adds new helicopters, the Sling Loading showcase scenario, and helicopter Time Trial challenges." This is available on their website and on Steam, and this trailer offers a look at what it includes. Arma 3 has also received a major patch updating the base game to version 1.34, and here's the outline of what the new version includes:

The Helicopters DLC is supported by a free Arma 3 platform update - released today alongside the Helicopters DLC. The 1.34 update includes the brand new Support multiplayer mode, where players need to provide various types of helicopter support – such as troop transport and medevac – in a Sector Control multiplayer scenario. In preparation of the new multiplayer mode, players can enroll in the brand new VR Training helicopter stages, and learn the ropes of rotary flight. In addition, Arma 3 content creators will be happy to learn that a variety of new in-game objects, ranging from landing platforms to military decorations and more, have also been added in the new update.

The Arma 3 platform update also introduces several major new features to Arma 3. For instance, players can now choose to enable the optional RotorLib helicopter flight model, which is an upgraded version of the flight model used in Bohemia Interactive’s Take On Helicopters, and provides an even more authentic helicopter flight experience. Furthermore, the platform update includes the aforementioned new ability to sling load cargo, which places a stronger emphasis on the importance of logistics on the battlefield. Last but certainly not least, the update implements the much-anticipated firing-from-vehicles feature - enabling passengers to engage targets while seated in a vehicle.

Op Ed

EW.com - Press square to feel: The problems with 'Call of Duty's' funeral scene.
It’s a ludicrous idea taken out of context, but in the course of the game itself? Yup, still silly. And the concept becomes even more troubling when considering the entire funeral sequence. It’s indicative of a problem games have suffered for years—distilling scenes meant to evoke pathos to a simple button press or two. We’re not given a reason to truly care about what’s happening other than “the game is telling us to feel something.”

Out of the Blue

Remember, remember the fifth of November...

There's reason to celebrate election day (and Guy Fawkes Day) every year in the Blue Tower, as this week marks the birthday of our most boisterous tenant, the Gunnar-man. It's hard to believe, but our favorite poodle is actually ten years old now, though I am very happy to say he does not show it, as he continues to display such enthusiasm he is often mistaken for a puppy. I'm still working on some way to make this a special occasion, as he gets the indulgence he so richly deserves on a daily basis, but I'm sure I'll figure out something.
