NCSOFT laid off employees today across all their western studios except for
Guild Wars developer ArenaNet.
Polygon has
a report saying over 60
staff were lost at WildStar creator Carbine Studios which is unconfirmed, though
NCSOFT did provide
them with a statement verifying that jobs were lost. Here's what they have to say: Today we announced a restructuring of key operations within NC West.
As a result of this restructuring, we are implementing staff reductions across
our Western operations with the exclusion of ArenaNet. While decisions like this
are always hard, they are necessary as we begin the implementation of a new
strategy designed to strengthen our footing as a leader in global entertainment.
Moving forward, we will continue to focus on our core development capabilities
and the intellectual properties (WildStar, Aion, Lineage, and Guild Wars
franchises) that have made NCSOFT what it is today. However, we are looking to
move into new business segments like mobile and tablet games as well as explore
emerging technologies.
Again, the decision to reduce staff was not an easy one, and we sincerely wish
everyone well in their next endeavors.

Kromaia is now available
on Steam, offering a
frenetic shoot 'em up that looks to relive the arcade days, as word is:
The frantic old-school action of classic coin-op shoot-‘em-ups comes
crashing headlong into the 21st century with Kromaia, exclusively for PC.
Explosive high-octane blasting combines with hordes of enemies in a 360˚
environment, allowing you to fly, spin and shoot anywhere and everywhere!
Where most shooters see you racing along a fixed path to blast anything in your
way, Kromaia does things differently. Set in three-dimensional space, you’re
free not just to explore but also dodge and blast through hordes of enemies all
intent on destroying you! With your objectives spread out in all directions,
it’s a true test of high-speed flying and sharpshooting skill – only the
greatest space pilots need apply!
Symphony Quest website announces
the full release of this musical action/RPG from Toadstool Games. Here's what
this is all about: Symphony Quest is a single-player, and cooperative
multiplayer action role-playing game for the PC. With the rise of a Goblin
menace, civilisation has collapsed, and you must fight to ensure the survival of
humanity. Nearly too late have humans discovered the greatest weakness of their
new foes; Music.
The ‘Symphony’ is the magical, musical technology used by mankind to fight
against goblins, and the hostile environment in the shattered remains of earth,
now known by most as ‘Dischord’. The player controls ‘Symphony’ with an 8-key
layout on the keyboard, corresponding to a full octave. Specific, melodic
combinations activate abilities that can be used to defeat enemies, assist
allies, and solve puzzles.
A new
Steam Greenlight campaign reveals plans for Five Nights at Freddy's 2,
an upcoming sequel to the survival/horror game that pits the player against the
animatronic horrors at a children's theme restaurant (thanks nin via
Rock, Paper, Shotgun). Here's
a teaser trailer and
word on the game: Welcome back to the new and improved Freddy Fazbear's
Pizza!
In Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the old and aging animatronics are joined by a new
cast of characters. They are kid-friendly, updated with the latest in facial
recognition technology, tied into local criminal databases, and promise to put
on a safe and entertaining show for kids and grown-ups alike!
What could go wrong?
As the new security guard working nights, your job is to monitor cameras and
make sure nothing goes wrong after-hours. The previous guard has complained
about the characters trying to get into the office (he has since been moved to
day-shift). So to make your job easier, you've been provided with your very own
empty Freddy Fazbear head, which should fool the animatronic characters into
leaving you alone if they should accidentally enter your office.
As always, Fazbear Entertainment is not responsible for death or
dismemberment. Continue here to read the full story.

This new
trailer from TOXIKK discusses movement in the upcoming first-person
shooter, sexing this up as much as possible with references to "the movement
model" and "advanced movement systems." This involves an overview
of basic shooter movement
even though this game is being marketed to hardcore shooter fans, but there is also discussion
of how basic movements can combine for advanced movement techniques to allow
faster movement, showing the game has its own "secret" way to bunny hop through
levels. Also demonstrated are rocket jumps, once again explained for newbies, as
well as other alternative modes of transport.
They say:
"Although the game is still in alpha, the movement model is already pretty much
set in stone and there will only be minor changes and adjustments to it until
the game hits its Early Access release on Steam." Here's word on the clip: "The game director of the
project, Martin Schwiezer, talks for about 10 minutes about the movement model
behind the game, showing fresh footage and demonstrates the basic and the
advanced movement systems of their upcoming back-to-the-roots Arena-FPS. The
footage shows the alpha build of TOXIKK." Continue here to read the full story.
The new GeForce drivers released yesterday are steadfastly failing to install on my GTX 760.
At various points this had me down to a single monitor at low resolution, but I
have things running with older drivers for the moment. The next step on my
troubleshooting checklist is to scream and throw things, so I'll put that off
for now.
NFL Week Eight kicks off tonight. Looks like an amazing game on paper, so
we'll see if it overcomes the TNF blowout trend.
