with everything you hoped for and nothing like what you expected."
Steam now offers the
promised Windows edition of FINAL FANTASY XIII, one of the installments
in Square Enix's RPG series. The game's system requirements are pretty modest,
which can be partially explained by this note: "Full screen display mode will
only run on an environment that supports a screen resolution of 1280 x 720."
GameSpot notes that
this user patch is already available to bring this to 1080p. Here's word on the game: As a deepening crisis threatens to plunge the
floating world of Cocoon into chaos, a band of unsuspecting strangers find
themselves branded enemies of the state. With the panicking population baying
for their blood, and the military all too happy to oblige, they have no choice
but to run for their lives. Join them on a desperate quest to challenge the
forces controlling their fate, and prevent untold destruction.
Featuring an unforgettable storyline, a battle system blending action and
strategy, cutting-edge visuals and awe-inspiring cinematic sequences, FINAL
FANTASY® XIII delivers the next step in the evolution of gaming.
- Final Fantasy XIII has been optimised for PC,
featuring full screen support and running at 60FPS.
- Both English and Japanese voice over will be

The
Legend of Grimrock website now offers a Grimrock 2 Compatibility Test
to help evaluate how the dungeon-crawler sequel will play on various systems.
This should not be confused with a playable demo of any sort, however, as they
explain this will not be an action-packed experience: "Do you want to help us
test the compatibility of Grimrock 2 on your computer? Great! Here’s a Torrent
link to the Grimrock2 Compatibility Test Installer (50 MB) that will fire up the
Grimrock 2 engine and display a 3D scene while the new Grimrock 2 main menu
music plays in the background. We don’t have the necessary bandwidth to
distribute the installer on our servers, so that’s why we are using Torrent for
distribution."
The
Bethesda Softworks Forums have technical details for The Evil Within,
offering discussion of the
recently
revealed specs for the
survival/horror game. There is also a discussion of the game being locked at 30
frames-per-second and a 2:35-1 aspect ratio, even on PCs, though there will be
unsupported options to unlock the framerate and play fullscreen. Here's
word: What's the status on the game's framerate and aspect ratio?
Shinji Mikami and the team at Tango designed The Evil Within to be played at
30fps and to utilize an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 for all platforms. The team has
worked the last four years perfecting the game experience with these settings in
mind. For PC players, we’ll provide debug commands on how you can alter the
framerate and aspect ratio, but these commands and changes are not recommended
or supported and we suggest everyone play the game as it was designed and
intended for the best experience.
Does the game support 4K resolution?
Yes. The engine can go even higher if you’ve got a monitor and video card that
supports it.
Can I disable the letterboxing?
The letterboxing (a 2:35:1 aspect ratio) is used for gameplay purposes, as
certain elements display in the black areas of the screen. On PC, you can turn
off the bars and force the game to render full-screen. However this option is
not supported. We’re keeping the ability to turn off bars as a console-only
command that we will share at launch
Happy birthday to us, as Blue's News moved to our own domain 18 years ago today,
on October 9, 1996. That's a long time in regular years, much less Internet
years, so that's pretty cool (possible new slogan, "Blue's
News: Older than Google"), and I
thank you all for all the ongoing support. I would like nothing better than to
propel the site upwards and onwards for another 18 years and beyond, and the
feedback we've been getting after recent turmoil in the community helps
reinforce the feeling that our traditional approach to informing you about what
is happening, rather than telling you how you should feel about it, is valued.
Regulars will joke we have never had a redesign since launching, and while
that's not true, I am aware that a little freshening up is in order, at least to
create a sensible menu system and a more mobile-friendly design, so that's
something that I'll probably have to act on before we turn 36. On a more serious
note, following the success of our fledgling Amazon association I'm looking into
other recent suggestions on how to support the site going forward in light of
meager ad revenue. So there's the state of the state. Thanks again for all the
support.
And it's week six of the NFL season, so here's
a discussion thread for the games and picks.
