Archived News:
Stardock has made their promised
fantasy strategy game announcement, unveiling Sorcerer King. which they say
offers a twist on the 4X genre with its introduction of asymmetrical victory
conditions. In another twist, the just-announced game is already available
through early access on
Steam with a full release planned for spring 2015. The
Sorcerer King website is live, and
offers a gameplay trailer
along with more details. "Sorcerer King is a new model for 4X games," says Derek
Paxton, VP of Stardock Entertainment. "Instead of competing against equal
players, you’re behind the eight ball trying to stop the Sorcerer King and his
minions from destroying the world. It’s strategy gaming under a guillotine."
Here's word on the game and why it may include top six lists about pop culture
tropes: The Sorcerer King beta is available now at http://store.steampowered.com/app/241990
for $39.99 (discounted 15% to $34.00 for a limited time). Players are able to
explore a vast and detailed world, finding treasure and adventure throughout the
monster-infested wilderness. Overcome tough but often amusing dilemmas in
hundreds of quests written by Cracked.com's Chris Bucholz, and command your
armies in tactical battles against the Sorcerer King's monstrous hordes. You
must defeat the Sorcerer King's terrifying lieutenants to unlock the Shadow Gate
and eventually battle the dark demigod himself or all will be lost. Again.
A sophisticated "Game Master" AI controls the Sorcerer King's unscripted
assaults. Unlike traditional 4X games where evenly matched rival factions race
toward diverse victory conditions, Sorcerer King has the player and his enemy
playing by an entirely different set of rules. The Sorcerer King doesn’t need to
crush your empire, he just needs to destroy the magical shards in order to enact
his doomsday plan. Defending the shards, not careful plotting toward economic
victory, is the only way to save the world. Continue here to read the full story.
Paradox Interactive announces Pillars of Eternity is now expected in
early 2015, a delay from previous plans to release Obsidian's RPG by the end of
this year. Here's the explanation: Obsidian Entertainment and Paradox
Interactive announced today that the highly anticipated fantasy role-playing
game Pillars of Eternity, originally scheduled for release in late 2014, has
been delayed until early 2015.
Feedback through the beta process from those who backed Pillars of Eternity on
Kickstarter has been extremely helpful. The development team are listening to
the feedback and are incorporating changes to ensure fans absolutely get the
best game possible. This short delay will allow Obsidian to produce the quality
of game that they can be rightly proud of.
"Since the very beginning of this project we promised our fans and ourselves
that we would release this game only when we knew it would be absolutely ready
for the best experience possible. We're very close to that point, but not quite
there yet. The feedback we have received through our playtest process has been
invaluable to us. We are coming into the home stretch but are pushing the
release out just a bit to make sure we honor that promise we made originally.
Thanks for your patience and support, it will be worth the wait." – Feargus
Urquhart, CEO Obsidian.
Both Obsidian and Paradox are aware of the anticipation the thousands of people
who donated to the Pillars of Eternity Kickstarter campaign have, many of whom
have been clamoring for a game in the style of classic role-playing games for
years. And, rest assured, no one is more anxious for the completion and release
of this game than we are. However, we are excited to get the extra time to
incorporate the feedback and add additional polish.
Your enthusiasm and support has been energizing for everyone and we're just as
excited as you are for this game to come out and kick this new renaissance of
classic style CRPG's into high gear!
Offering a "thank you," the
Transverse
website announces the cancellation of this space combat game proposed by
Piranha Games (thanks The Grifter). The game drew
skepticism from the start, with concerns about their funding
plans and accusations of ship plagiarism, and their crowd-funding plan
was reworked to add a minimum funding
goal, which their announcement notes remained out of reach: It’s a bitter
sweet day. Thank you for taking a chance and showing us that you are interested
in seeing our vision come to life. As you can see, the velocity of our
crowdfunding campaign never gained the momentum needed to bring Transverse to
life as a community funded concept. We are going to shut down our funding today,
ahead of the 30 day deadline and begin the process of refunding as promised.
We plan to take Transverse behind the curtain for now. One day, I hope to see
you on the Fringe!
The A Golden Wake
website now offers playable Windows, OS X, and Linux demos for A Golden Wake
in advance of next week's release of Wadjet Eye Games' point-and-click adventure
game. The demo is also available
through Steam, and here's
word on what it offers: "The demo takes place at the beginning of the game as
Alfie tries to get his foot in the door with George Merrick, the real-life real
estate mogul who figures prominently into A Golden Wake's storyline." Here's a
description of the game: Squeaky clean entrepreneur Alfie Banks comes face
to face with harsh reality when gangsters, the Great Depression, and raging
hurricanes come between him and the American Dream. Set in the legendary suburb
of Coral Gables, Florida, A Golden Wake draws you into a fascinating time and
place in modern history with a carefully researched story, nostalgic pixel art
graphics, and creative point & click adventure gameplay.
Steam now offers Front
Page Sports Football, Cyanide Studio's revival of this tackle football strategy
simulation. "The Front Page Sports Football series set the bar for sports sims,"
said Regis Robin, Lead Game Designer. "We wanted to capture what made the
original so amazing, but we also didn't want this to be a remake or an upgrade.
We wanted to start fresh. It's easy for a sim to get too bogged down in
spreadsheets of stats, or to focus on gimmicks over depth. Front Page Sports
Football was made to be accessible to newcomers, but it also contains layers of
strategy encompassing entire seasons down to single player attributes for
diehard fans." Unfortunately,
the first
handful of user reviews are disappointingly negative. A
launch trailer shows
off a bit of the game, and here's more: Recruit, train, and coach your
players to compete against 32 other teams in Pro League on your way to the bowl.
Being an effective coach is about developing the right skills for each player,
strategizing for the games and seasons ahead, planning for the unexpected, and
knowing when to push your players to the limit.
Front Page Sports Football is a strategic football sim featuring fully
customizable Gameplans drawing from over 2,300 plays. As the manager and coach,
it's up to you to scout and draft new talent, analyze your opponents'
weaknesses, and develop your players' skillsets on the road to
victory. Continue here to read the full story.
Here's a trailer
from Far Cry 4 showing off the weapons of Kyrat as well as the charismatic
former warlord who will sell them to you in the upcoming first-person shooter
sequel. Here's the deal: Today, Ubisoft released a new trailer featuring
the weapons of Far Cry® 4. Get an in-depth look at the all-new arsenal of
weapons at your disposal. Rain fire down upon your enemies with destructive
mortars, grenade launchers, and machine guns, or take a stealth approach with
automatic crossbows and kukri knives.
Who will be supplying this impressive arsenal of weapons? Longinus – a former
warlord who found God when he nearly died during a civil war in his country,
where a priest named Maliya hid him in a church in Pala and nursed him back to
health and eventually baptized Longinus in the waters of Goka Falls.
Unfortunately, the people of his country saw him as a warlord, and nobody
believed his so-called claims of being born again, so he left his country.
Longinus traveled with various religious expeditions searching for the blood
diamonds he helped export during his time as a warlord. He followed a trail to
the Himalayas and found himself in Kyrat, caught up in an all-too-familiar civil
war. Longinus may have been reborn, but this doesn’t mean that the lion became
the lamb. His willingness to sell guns and supplies to the sheep, while
advocating that they fight for freedom, came from his experience that warlords
don’t simply go away. Continue here to read the full story.
A new trailer from
Skyforge introduces the large-scale invasion events that will take place in
Obsidian's upcoming MMORPG. Word is: "Invasions are events of incredible scale
that affect all players where alien forces of enemy gods invade the Skyforge
planet of Aelion. Players must fight off invading parties by banding together
and teleporting to the part of the planet being attacked." Here's more: Once
an Invasion force has been repelled, players can take the fight to the invading
alien ship to finish off the attackers for good. The ship is led by an avatar of
a powerful god. Upon completion, players will be rewarded with powerful items
and their names will appear on an honor roll. Their victory will even bring a
temporary increase in rewards for the entire server. Continue here to read the full story.

Stardock plans to announce a new fantasy-themed strategy game today, according
to an exclusive report on
GamesBeat where they note that the prior attempt to create such a
game almost destroyed the company, as 2010's Elemental: War of Magic was
a self-described failure that
shook the company to its foundation before being reworked into a viable product.
Paving the way for the new game's announcement, the article takes a look at the
aftermath of the game's failure, and how it steeled the company to succeed going
forward. "Elemental was the fire that burned Stardock down so we could fly,"
brand manager Adam Biessener explains. "… like a beautiful bird. Our games are
much better, honestly."
Another new trailer
from Styx: Master of Shadows is now available in advance of next week's release
of this stealth game from Focus Home Interactive. Here's word of what's on
display in the new clip: In the fifth gameplay video shown today, we take another look at the dynamism
and flow of Styx’s treacherous ascent, having discovered clones, tactics,
skills, and styles. Using all of these to his advantage, Styx manages to poison
guards, blind them with his clone, climb vast heights, and reach his objective
unseen – the way a goblin should!
As discussed in the gameplay making of video, being a 200 year old goblin,
Styx is unique in that his nimble frame and athleticism lets him dance around
his environment, relatively quietly with deadly speed and agility. However,
while he is fast, agile, and cunning, he is also small, weak, and at constant
risk of being surrounded should he knock over a vase, or land noisily,
attracting the attention
of the guards. Continue here to read the full story.
My neighbor (the one who hates me for taking too long to cut down a tree) is
having some work done in his driveway that seems to paradoxically require both a
jackhammer and some degree of delicacy. This has resulted in a lot of low-speed
hammering, which is taking forever considering how little pavement is involved.
I guess it's just as well that I get used to it, because there have been utility
guys spray-painting the street for weeks to show where the water mains and such
are buried, as apparently Consolidated Edison is going to be replacing all the
gas lines soon, so we may be living that soothing jackhammer life for the
foreseeable future.
