Camelot Unchained Testing Delayed

The Camelot Unchained website has a novel-length update from Mark Jacobs explaining a considerable delay to initial alpha testing of Camelot Unchained, the upcoming MMORPG. They now estimate February 2015 is when they will launch the test that was supposed to commence last month, and they outline rewards they will give to backers if they miss the new window as well (thanks PC Gamer). The post wraps up with the good news, but here's part of the explanation of the delay:

We are deeply sorry that we have to delay the opening of Alpha Testing. While the Alpha Test date, like all of our dates, was “estimated,” that does not mean that we should be satisfied with just saying “We’re late,” and move on. The first thing I will address now is why we are late.

Why are we late? As mentioned in other updates, we were unable to fill most of our engineering openings until May 2014. We had hoped to fill most of those slots by the end of 2013. This put engineering far behind schedule, which led us to:

  1. Focus the vast majority of our programming. resources only on tech foundations of the engine.
  2. Slow the hiring of additional artists and asset creation as the latter might have changed as our tech evolved and left us with a lot of less-than-useful assets.
  3. Spend more of studio leadership’s time on interviewing prospective candidates. Andrew and I had to spend far too much time on the hiring process and as we have talked about before, we have a pretty thorough process.

Crimes & Punishments Trailer

A new trailer shows off the art of subversion in Crimes & Punishments, the upcoming next installment in Frogware's series of Sherlock Holmes mystery games. This is due for release on September 30th, and they plan on releasing a new video each week between now and then. Here's the description of today's clip:

Holmes is known for his high intelligence, and high level of deduction skill. However, Sherlock as he was imagined and written by Arthur Conan Doyle is also a master of disguise, a characteristic that Frogwares transposed in Crimes & Punishments, as one of the many skills the players will actively use to solve the 6 cases of the game.

In turn, we find at Baker Street, in Holmes' bedroom, a wardrobe that holds the key to Holmes' disguises, as well as a dressing table housing wigs, hats, glasses, different hair styles and beards. everything needed to transform into about anyone! This is a very useful skill, when it comes to approaching suspects who might be wary of a well-known detective, and get information - or even confessions - by faking being a member of their social class. This is exactly what reveals today's video, "Art of Subversion", as we witness Sherlock disguising as an Irish sailor to approach a suspect.

Kotaku - About GamerGate. Thanks nin.
GamerGate, however, does not appear to just be about the reclamation of the term "gamer."

It appears to be, for some, a rallying call to root out the ethical malfeasance of games reporters, a cause that I'm sympathetic with to a degree. Look, no media outlet is perfect, all benefit from reader skepticism and all recognize that part of their job is to note corrections, answer reader questions and work to improve. But some of the claims of journalistic malfeasance? They're ludicrously knotted in conspiracy theories that assume the worst about people with a track record of thoughtful work.

Free Hegemony Rome: The Rise Of Caesar DLC

Kasedo Games now offers Bannermen, a DLC pack as a free bonus to thank owners of Hegemony Rome: The Rise Of Caesar for purchasing their Roman empire strategy game. The changes in this are cosmetic, and they say that additional new content for the game is in the works. Here's word: "Strike fear into the hearts of your enemies and raise troop morale on the battlefield with the free ‘Bannermen’ micro-DLC for Hegemony Rome: The Rise of Caesar. This new cosmetic content adds four fully-animated units to the game: including the Roman Aquilifer and the Gallic Hornblower. These will be automatically integrated into your units upon download - making your veteran units look even more distinctive and fearsome on the battlefield. The DLC is a small thank you for the fantastic support from the community, but larger additional content is planned and will be coming soon. Additionally, further updates to the game will still be added regularly."

Spacecom This Month

11 bit launchpad announces a September 17th release date for Spacecom, a sci-fi strategy game for Windows, OS X, and Linux with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer support. They are also offering an opportunity to play the game before then, as a SpaceCom Multiplayer Tournament is underway, offering the chance to win an Alienware PC and other prizes. Here's the deal:

A strategic-to-the-bone, starfleet command game with a heavy focus on multiplayer. Spacecom is a battle of strategists in which deception, smart movement, and choices to battle decide victory or defeat.

No coincidence, no luck. Spacecom pushes your ability to strategize with a focus on real-time tactics and planning. Use proven maneuvers learned from military legends or devise your own plans. Dominate your enemies in planetary systems with up to six players per campaign. Most of all, you'll need a bright mind, cunning, and sound tactics.

When the war begins, leave the little things behind and dive into austere soundscapes as you immerse yourself in starfleet command. From now on, what matters is your grasp of tactics and strategy, not how fast you can click. Spacecom is about creativity in planning, not complexity of game mechanics.

Planetary Annihilation in Stores

Nordic Games announces the retail boxed edition of Planetary Annihilation is now available in stores, offering another way to get the space-based RTS game, still with no DRM. Those who still enjoy this sort of now-retro physical goods experience may want to hold off for September 23rd, when a Collector's Edition will follow, which includes a Logitech mouse and a hardcover book as well as digital goodies. Here's last week's launch trailer, and here's word:

This day has been eagerly anticipated by the real-time strategy community: after a long time in development, the hugely successful Kickstarter project Planetary Annihilation has finally been released. The spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander provides real-time strategy on an unprecedented scale. Up to ten players can engage in enormous battles on futuristic battlefields simultaneously: Planetary Annihilation knows no unit limits.

The amount of war material is far away from being humble, too: several mechs, armoured vehicles with a range of weaponry, war planes and bombers, scouts, heavy stationary artillery, portable rocket launchers, orbital weapons and – a particularly drastic method of combating the enemy – thrusters that can be mounted on planets and asteroids, transforming them into true planet annihilators.

For single player enthusiasts, Planetary Annihilation also offers many hours of entertainment with its randomised campaign mode Galactic War: this twist on the classic single-player campaign confronts players with randomly generated content across a dynamic galaxy, making every playthrough different, prioritising long-term motivation.

Planetary Annihilation is also mod-friendly – players can create their own units, their own planets and their own rules, and share them with the community, adding lots of free content to the basic game.

Slate - GamerGate explodes: Gaming journalists declare the gamers are over, but they are. Thanks Paul.
The attacks on the press have ranged from well-reasoned to offensive to paranoid, but the gaming journalists unwisely decided to respond to the growing, nebulous anger by declaring that “gamers” were dead. Such articles appeared concurrently in Gamasutra (“ ‘Gamers’ are over” and “A guide to ending ‘gamers’ ”), Destructoid (“There are gamers at the gate, but they may already be dead”), Kotaku (“We might be witnessing the ‘death of an identity’ ”) and Rock, Paper, Shotgun (“Gamers are over”), as well as Ars Technica (“The death of the ‘gamers’ ”), Vice (“Killing the gamer identity”) and BuzzFeed (“Gaming is leaving ‘gamers’ behind”). These articles share some traits in common besides their theses: They are unconvincing, lacking in hard evidence, and big on wishful thinking. A good number of them link to an obscure blog post by academic Dan Golding, “The End of Gamers,” which argues, again without evidence, that “the gamer identity has been broken” and that the current unrest “is an attempt to retain hegemony.” Kotaku writer Nathan Grayson linked to a similarly obtuse piece of academic argot (“ ‘Gamer’ is selfish ... conservative ... tribalistic”), which in Grayson’s words “breaks down the difference between ‘gamer’ as a manufactured identity versus loving games on multiple levels.” I’ve written essays comparing games to the work of artist Kurt Schwitters and poet Kenneth Rexroth, and even I can’t muster this level of vacuous self-importance on the subject.

There were questions about using our Amazon affiliate code on Amazon's other sites, but this won't work, as they have separate programs in each country. However it turned out to be simple enough to get approval, at least preliminarily, for a few additional programs, so those who shop at Amazon Canada, Amazon UK, or Amazon Germany can now support us if they wish by shopping after clicking through those respective links (we are yet to get final approval, but there's nothing to lose by posting those links). This should work the same as the original code, using a cookie to credit us for referring you, and providing us a commission at no additional cost. Thanks for your interest in helping in this manner... I will work on a sensible way to present this information for future reference.
