Archived News:
Ubisoft announces a two-week delay to Assassin's Creed Unity, saying
the stealth/action sequel is now due on November 11th in North America and
November 13th elsewhere, explaining the additional fortnight will help work out
some kinks caused by those next generation consoles. Here's word: Yes,
that’s two weeks after the previously announced release date. But along with big
ambition – and even bigger promises – comes a lot of heavy lifting. “This being
a fully next-gen game, it requires a lot of work, a lot of production, and a lot
of learning,” says Senior Producer Vincent Pontbriand. “It’s always hard to be
precise and to quantify exactly how much work is involved. So as we get close to
the finish we often realize we’re near the target but we’re not quite there
yet.”
Steam News announces
pre-purchases are now being accepted for
A City Sleeps, a
newly announced Windows and OS X twin-stick shooter from Harmonix, which will
include some of the music/rhythm elements for which the Rock Band
developer is known. The twin-stick part is serious, as they say an Xbox
360 controller for Windows (or equivalent) is "strongly recommended." Here's
word on the game, which is expected in October: A City Sleeps follows Poe,
youngest member of The Silk, an ancient clan of dream exorcists that can enter
the minds of sleeping hosts to rid their dreams of demons. When the residents of
SanLo fall into an endless slumber, only Poe can rescue them from a never-ending
nightmare. Equipped with her legendary Koto-sword “Heartstrings”, and flanked by
her stable of powerful ghost familiars, she must cleanse their dreams, and
uncover the city’s dark secrets.
Driven by an unforgettable original soundtrack that builds through player
actions and enemy engagement, A City Sleeps infuses classic twin-stick hardcore
shoot ‘em up sensibilities with moment-to-moment tactical choices.
The Titanfall website
has details on Game Update 6, the next patch for the mech shooter. Word is this
will de-mech the game a bit, as the free update will add a new game mode called
Pilot Skirmish which removes Titans from the mix. They also reveal other
gameplay enhancements and fixes the new version will bring, saying the patch is
coming soon. Here's part of the plan: Pilot Skirmish is the New Featured
Game Mode - Pilot Skirmish is an 8v8 mode with no AI and no Titans. Due to the
difference in player sizes with the rest of the game modes, Pilot Skirmish will
not be among the game modes played when choosing Variety Pack playlist.
Marked For Death is Now its own Permanent Game Mode! - When we first introduced
Marked For Death, we were planning to rotate it out for another mode after a
couple of weeks, but the enduring popularity of the mode convinced us to bring
it on full-time. There will now be a Marked For Death playlist to choose from,
along with custom Marked For Death loadouts to unlock.
Added Modes for Colorblind Titan Pilots - Three colorblind options (protanopia,
deuteranopia, and tritanopia) have been added. They affect IFF glows, crosshair
colors, and names above heads.
The
NVIDIA Blog announces new hardware support for Steam in-home streaming
using NVIDIA hardware (thanks
HARDOCP). Here's how this works: Valve and NVIDIA have just made game
streaming better than ever.
Last week, Valve officially released support for hardware encoding on
NVIDIA GeForce GPUs in the Steam
client. Pair this support with one of our latest GeForce GTX GPUs and you can
play remotely from your PC connected to any Steam-enabled system in your home at
resolutions up to 1080p at 60 fps.
“We’ve worked closely with NVIDIA to support hardware encoding on GeForce cards
with our Steam In-Home Streaming technology, and the result is nothing short of
amazing,” said Sam Lantinga, at Valve.
At NVIDIA, we’re all about great gaming experiences. Our goal for game streaming
is no different: customers should be able to enjoy the same high-resolution
graphics and split-second responsiveness on a remote system as they would
directly on a PC.
Our dedicated hardware encoder rapidly encodes each frame with the best required
image quality, while keeping lag to a bare minimum. It does all this while
providing amazing graphics performance and leaving the CPU available for even
the most demanding games.
The result: a great game streaming experience in any room of your house.
A
Steam Community announcement reveals a new release date for
Gauntlet, saying
Arrowhead Game Studios' action/adventure remake is now expected on September
23rd, the first day of autumn (thanks Dark). They apologize for the delay, which
seems excessive based on its original
summer release window, though it may have had a more specific release date
somewhere along the way. The post is accompanied by
a new gameplay walkthrough
trailer and word that they've added a new preorder bonus, saying: "As a
thank you for all fans who have pre-ordered the game, we have added a special
in-game item as a bonus: The Spawn of Kerthull, a special Wizard’s Robe made
from dead imps, who are children of the greater demon, Kerthull."
This "world" trailer
from Lords of the Fallen shows off CI Games' "brutal" action/RPG that's due in
October for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Word is: "Beyond the sterling
next-gen visuals, the trailer also includes the lush orchestral musical
accompaniment from composer Knut Haugen, the musician behind the acclaimed Age
of Conan soundtrack." On that topic, the main theme from the soundtrack can be
heard in this OST trailer.
Here's more on the world trailer: Discover the world of Lords of the
Fallen in this new trailer. Will Harkyn, the world’s only hope, defeat the
fallen god and his Rhogar armies? Only you will decide. Those that Pre-Order
Lords of the Fallen will be bestowed with a special Limited Edition version that
will include the official game soundtrack, Monk's Decipher DLC which enables
players to uncover hidden secrets, and the Demonic Weapons Pack DLC that gives
players three additional special weapons to wield in battle. Continue here to read the full story.
A new
"dream drive" trailer from World of Speed shows off the upcoming racing
game, featuring a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and a Subaru Impreza WRX STi in
action. Word is this is a full-throttle race, though we've never one of those
that driving towards each other and stopping like the do in this clip. Word is:
"Slightly Mad Studios and publisher My.com have released a brand-new trailer for
their upcoming free-to-play racing MMO World of Speed. The trailer follows a
full throttle race between the legendary Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi
Lancer Evolution X, historically some of the best rally race cars and long time
rivals in the World Rallying Championship. As the world-class rally cars drift
hairpin turns and blast down straightaways through the streets of London, they
showcase just two of the many famous car models in World of Speed. Players will
be able to hit the track with their favorite cars to prove once and for all who
the best driver is by registering for closed beta, which will start Q4 2014, at:
http://wos.my.com/." Continue here to read the full story.
The Daily Beast - Gamers Want to Game: Video Games Aren’t Blockbuster Movies.
Thanks Matthew.
People who make and play video games need to realize that movies aren’t
their competition. TV and film are competition for each other, but anyone
who wants to play a game doesn’t want to do either of those things. Every
medium is at it best when it’s doing something no other medium can do. TV
shows are at their best when they tell a massive story over dozens of hours
and really flesh out their characters and their world. Films are at their
best when they can compact a story down to its essentials.
Video games are best when they allow a player to experience something new or
interact with another world in a meaningful way.
The latest
financial report from CCP (in Icelandic, Adobe Acrobat format) reveals the EVE
Online developer is closing its San Francisco office, and parting ways with
former chief marketing officer David Reid and chief financial officer Joe Gallo.
CCP explains they are looking to "combine and simplify" some operations, and
Reddit notes that translating the report suggests flat revenues played into
the decision. Thanks

An update on the Quake
Live website describes plans to change id Software's online shooter as they
prepare to release it on Steam. The goal is to make Quake Live more
accessible to new players, which is an interesting approach to this version of
Quake III Arena, an almost 15 year-old first-person shooter that has
always catered to an extremely hardcore audience. For those who have never
stopped improving at the game since 1999 (and if you've played, you know they're
out there), the original game mechanics will be preserved in a "Classic Duel"
mode. Here's word on this attempt to improve the game's mass appeal: These
new changes have been encapsulated within the default Quake Live ruleset:
New Quake Live Ruleset
- Players may now hold jump to continuously jump.
- Players may now hold forward and jump to 'bunny
hop', allowing them to slowly gain up to 2x their base movement speed.
- Introduced Loadouts in select modes; allowing
players to select one Primary Weapon (hmg, rl, lg, rg) and one Secondary
Weapon (sg, gl, pg, mg).
- Added the command "weapon toggle" to toggle
between your Primary and Secondary weapons. Defaults to "f" for new users.
- Unified weapon respawn time to 5 seconds across
all game modes.
- Unified friendly fire, disabled across all game
modes.
- Added global Ammo Packs, in lieu of weapon
specific ammo, where each pack grants you a small amount of ammo for each
weapon in your inventory.
- Reduced ammo respawn time from 40 seconds to 10
seconds.
- Added in-world item timers for "major" items,
including armors, megahealth, power-ups, and medkit.
- Items have taller pickup collision boxes, so that
players will not miss items as they jump over them.
- Added Power-up Spawn POIs, that appear 10 seconds
before a power-up spawns.
- Added Power-up POIs, that indicate when an
available power-up is available in the arena.
For players who wish to largely avoid the new major changes, the legacy style
of play has been preserved within a "Classic" ruleset. All of our public Duel
servers run in Classic mode. Subscribers may host additional classic servers
using our "Create Match" feature. This includes the launching of Standard
Classic servers, which any player may freely join.
Indie Korean developer Fakedice announces Dicetiny is in development for
early access release this winter, saying a Kickstarter will launch next month to
support its development. They describe an unusual mashup, calling this "a PC
board game mashed with dungeon crawler and card battle games while being
influenced by such games as Monopoly, Diablo, and Hearthstone." In case this
does not conjure an immediate detailed image of what to expect, they offer
this trailer to show
off the concept, which, true to the names of both the game and the developer,
features virtual dice. Here's a fuller description: In this 4 player co-op
game, playing as one of four classes, player has to work together with three
other players online to battle monsters on a board where random events such as
treasure, quests, or traps are hidden, and ultimately defeat an evil dragon to
save the world. The key to success will depend on how well you utilize your
class’ specialty and cooperate with other players.
Player rolls dice to move and draws a class-specific card from the deck to
attack, heal, run, teleport, shoot arrows, or drop meteors among many. Clearing
the stage gives a random card drop with which you can build your own card
deck. Continue here to read the full story.
Paradox announces Pandora: Eclipse of Nashira will be released on
September 19th, offering the
recently announced expansion
for their 4X strategy game Pandora: First Contact. They explain how this
finally brings the game's diplomacy to where they want it: Even though
diplomacy has been improved by the patches, it was still not a decisive feature
in the game. But the time for blind and demonstrative war will come to an end on
September 19th, the official release date of Eclipse of Nashira, the ultimate
expansion for Pandora: First Contact.
Indeed this new add-on is really focused on shadow warfare and underground
moves. Espionage, sabotage, riots, and technology theft are only few examples of
the new sneaky possibilities that await the players. At the same time the
different factions start to expand beyond the planet's landmass to generate more
resources, opening up a new frontier. Once more the balance of power should be
reconsidered on this inhospitable planet, and both ruse and low blow will now
play a major role on the surface of Pandora.
