A
Project Eternity Kickstarter update introduces the backer beta for
Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian's crowd-funded RPG (thanks nin). They offer
instructions for backers on how to redeem their beta keys, and outline what the
first round of testing will entail: The Backer Beta is initially being
released only through Steam and only for the Windows platform. We are working
hard on bringing Mac and Linux to you guys in the next few weeks. Note that if
you are concerned about linking the Backer Beta to the final product, you need
not worry -- the Backer Beta is considered a separate product. If you want to
participate in the Backer Beta, your final product will not be locked into Steam
or Windows.
The first release of the Backer Beta is the build we have put together for the
Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany. What you will be initially playing is
what we are showing there. We plan to update the Backer Beta over time to test
performance improvements, bug fixes, balance passes, and other changes we'd
appreciate your feedback on.
There are no NDAs for those who are participating in the Backer Beta. If you
want to share images, videos, or general feedback on content with the public, we
appreciate your thoughts and criticism.
Spearhead Games announces the beginning of early access to Arena: Cyber
Evolution (ACE), a game formerly known as Project Cyber which they
are describing as "the world’s first MOSA" (Multiplayer Online Sport Arena).
This early access launch
trailer shows off the game, and you can check it out for free
on Steam. Here's the
deal: Though it originally took notes from sports like soccer and hockey,
and from Champion-oriented MOBAs like League of Legends and DoTA, ACE has taken
shape quite differently from either source of inspiration: as a new sport in its
own right. Unlike any other e-sport on the market, ACE allows the player to
precisely control their character and the ball through direct mouse movement –
no AI, no auto-targeting, and no constant clicking. In addition, ACE’s gameplay
mechanics emphasize teamwork over individual strength; the game’s progression
system allows experienced players to customize their character’s play-style; and
the variation between characters ensures that no two matches are the
same.
This video recaps a
twitch session where Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks endures the terrors of
playing The Evil Within alone in a darkened room for more than an hour, all
without an underwear change. Here's word on the clip, and the glimpse of
BATTLECRY it offers: "What do you get when you have Bethesda Softworks' Pete
Hines in a (mostly) dark room and "The Evil Within"? Find out in the third
episode of Bethesda TwitchWorks - Evil Takes Hold. Stay tuned til the end to
also see the inaugural BATTLECRY tournament from QuakeCon 2014!" Continue here to read the full story.
A new trailer from
Toren offers a look at this recently announced adventure game from indie

existential questions. In the game, players will witness the birth and the

It sounds like Ryan Carmack is a silicon chip off the old block, as
John
Carmack tweets that we can now play Angry
Face, a game designed by his nine year-old son. Word is: My name
is Ryan and I'm 9 years old. I enjoy video games a lot so I made one. I feel
nervous about my game… it's rather simple. It's called Angry Face! This is my
version of Pong. I wrote the game but my 4 year old brother helped me with sound
and testing. He really likes the game. This is the very first game that I've
created and I want to make more in the future. I hope I get a good response and
that everyone likes it.
My grandma wanted a slower version of the game so I added a grandma mode and a
pro mode for people who want it faster. Also, my game can only be played on a
PC, Mac or laptop. It doesn't play on smart phones or tablets.

A tweet from
Friday by Marcus "Notch" Persson shows the Minecraft creator has
backed off on his hard line against adding Oculus Rift support to the sandbox
mining game, saying: "And about now I'm officially over being upset about
Facebook buying Oculus. I'm upset about there being a hole in my favorite sock
instead." When it was announced Facebook was acquiring Oculus
in
March, Notch
famously tweeted he was cancelling plans for Oculus Rift support, saying
"Facebook creeps me out." When asked if this means plans for Oculus Rift support
were back in place,
Notch said
"that's up to the minecraft dev team." For his part, John Carmack seems willing
to help,
tweeting an offer of support: "say the word, ship the source, and i'll make
sure It runs well on you-know-what..." Thanks

Intravenous Software narrows the previously
announced August Steam
release window for NeonXSZ, saying the
6DOF cyberspace first-person shooter will be released for Windows, Linux, and OS
X on August 22nd. They
also announce that those who have already purchased the game
through Desura will be
receiving a Steam key as well. Here's a
recent August trailer
showing off the game, and here's a refresher: In NeonXSZ
(pronounced Neon Excesses) you are injected into cyberspace to stake your place
in a war of virus versus machine. During your journey you will fly dozens of
spaceships with hundreds of upgrades allowing you to create totally unique
spacecraft with which to wage war. Will you protect the operating system or join
the infection to bring it down?
NeonXSZ is our little homage to Descent combined with the frenetic adrenaline
pumping feel and gameplay mechanics of Quake. Then add Diablo's loot explosions,
rpg elements, leveling up, procedurally generated environments and enemies.
Finish it all off with truly open-world gameplay inside a micro ecosystem of up
to one thousand unique little AI dudes buzzing around getting into fights and
doing their own thing.

to suit everyone from a complete novice through to the most elite hardcore 6DoF
veteran. Continue here to read the full story.
The Elder Scrolls Online retains the top spot on the
GfK Chart-Track chart of the 20 bestselling PC games in the U.K. for the
week ending August 16th. On the
all platforms/all prices chart The Last of Us continues on at number
one. Here's word:
‘The Last of Us: Remastered’ (-40%) remains unopposed at the top of the
All Formats Chart this week.
The PS4 edition of the critically acclaimed title has now been No1 for three
weeks in succession, equalling the unbroken 3 week runs of both ‘Watch Dogs’ and
‘Titanfall’ and bettering the 2 weeks of previous Sony PS4 exclusive ‘Infamous:
Second Son’. ‘Watch Dogs’ (-22%) holds on to No2 for a third week, while
‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ (+1%) jumps 2 places to No3 (its joint highest
position of the year so far).
A 7% rise in sales propels ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ up four places to No4, helped
by strong sales of the Xbox One edition. Like its Xbox 360 partner, the PS3
edition of Minecraft (-1%) also jumps 2 places, up from No7 to No5. ‘The Lego
Movie Videogame’ (+6%) is a non-mover at No6 ahead of ‘FIFA 14’ (-21%) and
‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (-27%) that both slip 4 places to No’s 7 and 8
respectively. ‘Battlefield 4’ (-12%) hangs on to No9 for a third week, while
‘Titanfall’ (+6%) creeps back into the Top 10 at No10. The only new entry to
make an impression this week is ‘Risen 3: Titan Lords’ from Deep Silver which
debuts at No12 in both the PS3 and Xbox 360 Full Price Charts.
Over the weekend I was able to finally fix the hole in the backyard gate that
Hudson the wonder dog chewed back in the day as one of her escape routes. I've
tried to address this several times in the past, but was never able to locate a
place that sells the pickets or lengths of fencing until my neighbor replaced
some of his own fence, allowing me to scavenge from his old one. I had to
cut them to fit, but now they are in place, and the gate is nearly as good as
new. This has me looking to address our other fencing issue, but I'm a little
stuck as to how. There's a section of fence that's been displaced by a tree, and
I'd really like to cut it off on either side so the tree is like a natural part
of the fence, but don't want to nail the ends of the fence into the tree (I've
read mixed wisdom on how bad nails are for trees, but there's general agreement
they aren't really good for them)... I've considering fashioning some sort of
wooden brace to go around the tree, but that seems like something that would end
up too clunky and ugly even if I was a woodworking pro, which I obviously am
not, so if anyone has any clever ideas on how to secure a fence to a tree
without committing some sort of crime against nature or aesthetics along the
way, I'm all ears.
