The
Minecraft Reddit has a thread discussing Mojang disallowing "pay to win"
servers, though whatever originated the thread seems to have been removed.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun explains that Mojang may
rework the EULA for their open world blocks game to stop server operators from
charging players for perks, offering the following quote from Mojang's Erik Broes: “You cannot make money with Minecraft without our permission… If you are
on a server, your experience should be the same as every other player. We just
do not want people to mix the pools of ‘paying people’ and ‘nonpaying people’.”
There's also a clarification on what this does not cover from
notch on Twitter:
"You can charge for hosting servers, but not for gameplay features." He
also says the
EULA hasn't changed, because this situation has always been covered,
expressing his
hatred for F2P games, which is how he views servers offering "rewards for
donations."
The
Flat Rock Software GitHub Page
now offers the source code for some of the first games developed by id Software,
including TheCatacomb, Catacomb3D, Catacomb, and Hovertank3D. These packages are
being offered for free under the GPL, though like other such releases, this
covers the code, not the art assets, which will still required licensed copies
(which are sold by
Flat Rock). This
inspired a nostalgic
Tweet from
John Carmack: "Thanks to Flat Rock Software and @Blzut3, the early code I
wrote for Softdisk is going GPL. https://github.com/FlatRockSoft/ Turbo Pascal
memories." Thanks
Phoronix.

Managed to clear some wood and leaves yesterday without losing any blood to tick
bites, much less chainsaw accidents. We definitely picked the right day to do
it, too, as it's a lot hotter today than yesterday, and I was able to put that
cooling towel I got to good use as it was.
