W3 Studios announces
Abatron, a
science fiction-themed real-time strategy/first-person shooter hybrid coming to
Windows, OS X, and Linux using Valve's Source engine. They offer
this trailer showing
off the concept and gameplay to spur support for the game's
Steam
Greenlight campaign. Here's word on what to expect:
Shrapnel and
flames pierce and singe your armor; your eyes are blinded by the destruction of
your defensive tower. As ground forces are dwindled & slaughtered, you discover
new technology enabling long range bombardment. You decisively spend resources
to create new SIEGE, GROUND, and AERIAL units. While your
enemy advances on the front lines, your flanking maneuver with starships goes
unnoticed. Immediately, you switch to FIRST-PERSON-MODE. Now is the time
to bring vengeance and rain death upon your enemy!
Abatron is space warfare on steroids. Blurring the lines between
Real-Time-Strategy and First-Person-Shooter, Abatron is the next evolution of
hybrid game-play. Create armies, then switch to FPS and play any unit at
anytime! Truly, get into the battle and turn the tide of war.

ATLUS announces Rollers of the Realm, a game that will put the wizard in pinball
wizard by combining a pinball simulation with a fantasy-themed role-playing
game. This is planned for release for Windows, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita this
holiday season, and in the meantime, the game's
official website offers screenshots
and details to help us understand how this will work. Here's more on that from
the announcement:
In the game, static pinball tables are replaced by
dynamic locations with objectives, secrets, and multiple areas. Along with the
standard bumpers are AI-controlled enemies, who can attack and do damage to the
pinball flippers. And the familiar shiny silver pinballs? Those become playable
characters, each with different attributes, special abilities and even physics.
The story opens up through an epic six chapters, where players will have to
master the strengths and weaknesses of each character ball.
Along with compelling backstories and personal agendas that get revealed through
main story progress, characters come to life in voice-acted cinematics and
dialog scenes. New characters with new abilities can be unlocked and can browse
the realm's item shop. Upgrades bestow enchantments and special abilities that
will be needed to topple some of the game's tougher bosses.

I have another day of rural ground keeping slated for today, having barely
recovered from last week's efforts. I will be a bit better prepared this time,
however, as I have a towel (Douglas Adams would approve) for cooling, and will
adopt the fashion-forward look of tucking my pants into my socks to stave off
the ticks. Here's hoping this can make the ordeal suck less this time.
