PC Games has a confirmation that
Risen 3: The Titan Lords is the cover story on their latest print issue.
This confirms development of the next installment in Piranha Bytes' action/RPG
series, the game's subtitle, and presumably the authenticity of the leaked
screenshots. A translation shows no other new details about the game, except for
their tease that "compared to Risen 2 everything changes." Thanks
Polygon.
Craig Scott has joined Bigpoint as lead designer a "new breed" of MMOG after
parting ways with CCP, where he most recently served as design director for
EVE Online. "I am happy to be with Bigpoint now," Scott said in
a statement posted on GamesIndustry International. "Bigpoint has major
experience in the future sector of free-to-play, online games. Furthermore, I
expect to have much space for trying new things, which is a premise for making
really innovative games and which, of course, means a lot of fun for both the
teams and the users. That's what I see Bigpoint is currently about."

Reviews of the THIEF reboot are starting to roll out in advance of this
week's release of the stealth/action reboot. The game currently has a 71
Metascore, which is pretty
mediocre based on the typical game scoring curve, though not every outlet has
chimed in yet. Here are some of the early notices for the game:
Here's a new trailer
from Divinity: Original Sin, Larian Studios' next installment in their
Divinity series of role-playing games for Windows and OS X PCs. The clip shows
off some gameplay and cinematics, and concludes with word to expect the game in
Spring 2014, which begins on March 20th in these parts. This represents a delay,
as the game was previously slated
for release on February 28th, which they say is "for improvements based on
Early Access and backer feedback." Continue here to read the full story.
Dean Hall is planning on parting ways with developer Bohemia Interactive by the
end of this year,
reports Eurogamer, saying he will start up his own development studio in his
native New Zealand to develop multiplayer games. It's not clear is this will
happen before or after the planned completion of the DayZ zombie
survival/horror game based on the Arma II modification of the same name,
but he explains he will extend his run to avoid leaving the development of DayZ
in a lurch. "I would extend my involvement here as long as Bohemia wanted," he
explains, adding "needed - me," for emphasis. Though it sounds like he will lead
his own team at his new studio, his explanation of his departure includes his
idea that he is not ideally suited to seeing such a project all the way through.
"I am a grenade. I have a specific use. I'm really good at risk-taking and
making other people take risks, I've always been good at that in my life. Like
you say, maybe I've got the gift of the gab, so I can talk, I can explain
something, I can talk people up to the ledge and get them to jump off it," he
explains. "But eventually, that's the bad person to have. Eventually, you don't
want the guy telling you to go over the top and get through. So at some point
I'll be a disaster for the project, at least in a leadership role." He does also
explain that he will never be completely free of this project: "I'll always be
involved with it; there's no way to escape it."
GfK Chart-Track has issued new sales charts tracking game sales in the U.K. for
the week ending February 22nd. On
the PC full-price there's a new entry in the top 10, as Rambo and his mullet
show up at number five. On the
all-platforms top 40 the improbable remake doesn't fare as well, debuting at
number 17. The top new entry on that chart is at number eight, where Donkey Kong
Country: Tropical Freeze resides. Here's
the latest word: ‘The
Lego Movie Videogame’ builds on week 1 success with a second (half-term) week at
the top (+7%), having also soared to the top of the UK box office in its first
week.
EA’s ‘FIFA 14’ receives a price-induced sales kick, especially on 360/PS3,
climbing 2 places to No2 (+22%). Activision move down 1 place to No3 with ‘Call
of Duty: Ghosts’ (-23%) with EA’s ‘Battlefield 4’ right behind at No4 (+15%),
climbing 3 places from No7 thanks to price promoted last-gen 360/PS3 versions.
Nintendo claim the highest new entry this week at No9 with Wii U ‘Donkey Kong
Country: Tropical Freeze’ and Ubisoft climb 23 places to No10 as ‘Rayman
Legends’ (+299%) debuts on PS4/Xbox One, with the game now available on 7
formats.
Also debuting this week is Reef Entertainment’s ‘Rambo: The Video Game’ at No21.
Last week 5 games in the Top 40 were Lego titles – this week it is now 9 with a
further 4 older titles re-entering in the mid 30’s (POTC/Batman/SWIII Clone
Wars/IndieJones 2). Aside from certain home computer versions of these 9, all
were developed by Warner Bros’ Traveller’s Tales, dating back to 2007’s ‘Lego
Star Wars: The Complete Saga’, currently residing within the Top 20. Combined UK
revenue for just these 9 titles currently stands at over £145m. Lego as a brand
stands at No10 in the UK revenue all-time Brands analysis, during the period
1995-2013.
Happy 18th birthday to Qtest, the prerelease QUAKE demo!
I'm a big fan of J.K. Simmons going back to him being as bad as a bad guy can
get in Oz, through his fine work in roles such as J. Jonah Jameson, the
guy who sells that insurance no one owns, and of course, Cave Johnson, so naturally I watched his new show, Growing Up Fisher last night. It was cute
and touching, though not necessarily particularly funny, maybe because it has a
little more exposition to get out of the way than many shows to set up the
premise of a character who made it through law school without anyone figuring
out he was blind. Anyway, being such a fan of Simmons', I hope this succeeds for
him, so maybe they should hurry up and get to the point where he becomes
Daredevil before they lose their audience.
