A new
Letter from the Chairman on the Roberts Space Industries website celebrates
the news that the crowd-sourced funding for Star Citizen has passed the
$39 million plateau, unlocking the next stretch goal of "the penultimate
user-chosen star system" (thanks 88fingers). When the game hit $38 million,
Chairman Roberts teased "a new goal that will help chart the course for the
future of Star Citizen in a different way," which he now reveals to be a
Procedural Generation R&D Team, saying "If we can develop a truly great
procedural generation system, one that lets us create entire planets for you to
populate, then we can expand the game to add these features (and more) in the
future." Here's more on their $40 million stretch goal: Procedural
Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud
Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of
Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating
entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike
team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this
technology a reality.
Really Slick now offers online sales of Retrobooster, their cave-flying
survival shooter. The game is offered
through their website,
and here's a trailer
from last month and here's the game's elevator pitch: Retrobooster is a
reinvention of the cave-flyer for players who love games of skill. Set at 1980s
difficulty, it is a survival shooter that balances careful navigation, bullet
hell battles, speed-flying challenges, and puzzles. Unlike in most cave-flyers,
your ship is extremely responsive. Great detail has been invested in the physics
and feel of the controls to create a fresh experience. Your first goal is merely
to survive to the end, while practiced players can shoot for high scores. There
is also split-screen multiplayer and a custom particle engine dishing out the
pyrotechnics. Continue here to read the full story.

There's
an interview with Tim Schafer on GamesIndustry International discussing how
to stay afloat in "a pool of Internet Twitter hate," discussing the reaction to
the announcement that Broken Age would be broken into two parts, as Tim
describes the venom this generated from people outside their Kickstarter
audience, as their communication with their backers eased the way for this news.
He also confirms that the plan to fund the development of Act 2 through the
sales of Act 1 has succeeded. "We've made enough that we can make the second
half of the game for sure," Schafer said. "And we're not done making it to all
the platforms because we haven't released it on iPad yet. I feel that's going to
be a really interesting platform for adventure games. It's such a fun place to
play point-and-click graphic adventures, and so many people have them. That's
exciting to me."
Steam News announces
that Rambo The Video Game
is now available, rushing to cash in on the 1980s installments in the film
series based on the exploits of a disenfranchised Vietnam war veteran. The game
is on sale for the next week for 15% off its normal USD$39.99 price. Here's
word: RAMBO ® THE VIDEO GAME puts the player in John Rambo’s combat boots,
and takes them on an action packed journey through the iconic combat sequences
and story-arcs of FIRST BLOOD ™, RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II ™ & RAMBO III ™.
Locked and loaded with the trademark Rambo arsenal of weapons, you battle
through the boss showdowns and take-downs from the films - everything from
Rambo’s evading the police in First Blood, to his single, explosive bow strike
on Lieutenant Tay in Rambo First Blood Part II, and on to his shredding Russian
helicopters with the DShK 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun in Rambo III.
In this classic arcade adventure you can use the classic Rambo weapon set of a
bow, a knife, and guns as you encounter (and create) chaos, carnage and
destruction.
The Starbound
website describes progress on moving into their new offices and playing with
their cool wall dividers. They also explain how their plans to push out content
updates as soon as they are ready: The programmers have been putting the
finishing touches on the system we’re going to use to push updates more
frequently. Essentially we’re separating content updates and engine updates.
Content updates are going to be pushed to the server as and when content is
finished being produced, we’re no longer going to wait on engine updates to push
them out at the same time. This also means engine updates will get additional
internal testing.
The artists have been working on a bunch of new content that’s pretty much ready
to go as soon as this is done. We’ll also be adding the best/most fitting mods
to the game with increased frequency.
The pace is really going to pick up.
These content only updates won’t increase the version number, so modders don’t
need to worry about continuously updating their mods.
Steam News announces the
release of Holy Avatar vs. Maidens of the Dead, Headup Games' new parody
RPG in the vein of their Grotesque Tactics. Here's word: Following the
success of the RPG-Parody Grotesque Tactics franchise, comes a spin-off nestled
in the heart of a tropical zombie bevvy of beauties against the greatest hero of
them all, conveniently titled: Holy Avatar vs. Maidens of the Dead
As the story goes...
...after the last great battle, our hero Holy Avatar decides to grab a little
R&R with his Guild of Maidens on a Caribbean island he recently purchased and
renamed “Holy Island”.
Upon arrival on the beach, he makes a gruesome discovery; numerous dead maidens,
horribly mutilated, are scattered all over the island and what’s worse, they’re
not staying dead! Holy Avatar must put down his mai tai and investigate this
strange and unsettling turn of events. New adventures, new hazards and, did we
mention the zombies… await our hero and his companions inside the dense woods
and caves of this once idyllic island.

A new Hollow Lullaby
trailer from Dark Souls II shows off more of the upcoming action/RPG
sequel, saying: "Don't miss the hardest game you'll ever love. Explore a vast
breathtaking world filled with mythical monsters & murderous bosses. It's about
the journey, not the destination." The clip runs a bit over a minute, providing
cinematics and a somber narration celebrating the notorious difficulty of the
series, saying: "this isn't about death, this is about what you learn
from death." Heavy. Continue here to read the full story.
The Counter-Strike:

Well we didn't get the rain predicted for yesterday, but it's underway now, so
hopefully it will take away some of that snow. Apparently this snow removal will
be assisted by how foggy it is, as this morning I had one of those "today I
learned" moments when a meteorologist explained that, depending on the
conditions, the heat released by the formation of fog can actually have a
greater impact on melting snow that direct sunshine. In looking for details
about this, I found a page
explaining that the fog can sometimes actually clear snow faster than rain as
well. Go fig.
R.I.P.: So very sad to
hear about the passing of Ruby legend Jim Weirich. Thanks Ant via
