There's a
John Smedley, AMAA on reddit where the president of Sony Online
Entertainment answers questions about SOE's plans to
unify subscriptions,
support PlanetSide 2,
close four games,
launch EverQuest Next,
and more (thanks
VG247). He also makes a couple of references to their next unannounced game,
saying this is "DEDICATED" (in AOL all-caps) to
Star Wars Galaxies
players, saying that the defunct Star Wars MMORPG was the one title where he
"would do everything differently." Though that seems to imply another Star Wars
game, that will not be the case, as he calls this a "completely new IP," calling
out superannuation to tell us more, saying: "The data is on the interwebs..
someone just has to find it." Word is:
If you could relaunch a shutdown
title which one would you pick and what would you do differently this time?
SWG. I would do everything differently.
SWG PLAYERS - OUR NEXT GAME (not announced yet) IS DEDICATED
TO YOU. Once we launch it... you can come home now.
Wings of Saint Nazaire
is an indie space-combat game built with the Unity engine to recall the classic
gameplay of the
Wing Commander and
X-Wing franchises (thanks
Ant
via
Indie Retro News). A full release is TBA, but they currently offer an alpha
version which can be played online in your browser, or downloaded for Windows,
OS X, and Linux. Here's a
really old trailer showing things off, and here's word:
Wings of
Saint Nazaire is an action-orientated space simulation game reminiscent of
titles such as Wing Commander™ and the X-Wing™ series. Wings is designed to be
an easy-to-play but hard-to-master game - that means you can jump in, fly
around, kick ass and have a ton of fun as a newbie but the game also offers core
players enough gameplay depth to keep even the veterans of the genre
interested.

There are far more weekends every year without any official NFL games than with,
but for a big fan like myself, this blank week between the end of the playoffs
and the Super Bowl is the worst of them. Yes the Pro Bowl is today, but I've
never been able to get too excited about this, and the new unconferenced draft
format hasn't really changed that, so it's just another extended wait for the
championship. That said, the extra week seems appropriate to the occasion,
allowing extra time for healing, travel, preparation, and, of course, hype.
There was a theory years ago that rust from the two-week layoff was one of the
reasons so many Super Bowls turned out to be crappy, but there have been so many
competitive games since the low-point that left us wondering if they were all
destined to be blowouts that this no longer seems to be a concern. The Giants
played Super Bowl XXV at a point where there was only one week between the
conference championship and the Super Bowl, and that certainly turned out to be
a close game, but I do recall the lack of the extra week also made the occasion
seem less special to me as a fan, so I guess I'm actually in favor of it, even if I don't enjoy the wait when it rolls around.
