An HD remake of
Midwinter is in the works for PCs and consoles, reports
Eurogamer, saying a Kickstarter is coming early this year with the game's
release expected early next. The original Midwinter is a post-apocalyptic
first-person action/RPG designed by
the late Mike
Singleton for Atari ST, Amiga, and PC in 1989. This is in the works at Chilli
Hugger Software, who previously remade Singleton's The Lords of Midnight on iOS.
They disclose that the creative lead on the project is Dan Whitehead, one of
their contributors who over time penned a
retrospective on the game and an
obit for Mike Singleton. "Midwinter was a seminal game, and a huge influence
on the open world sandbox genre, but Mike's vision was held back by the
technology of the time," Whitehead tells them. "Our aim is to bring Midwinter
back into the modern gaming environment, combining the depth and variety of the
original with today's cutting edge visuals and processing power. The goal is not
to merely remake the game, but to fully realise Mike's ambitious design without
the limitations of 16-bit hardware."
A
Kickstarter update for
The Repopulation shows that it has now hit its
second stretch goal, adding Adversarial Camps to this upcoming sandbox survival
MMORPG. With the crowdfunding period for the game halfway completed, they also
outline the project's next goal, an extension to the engagement system called
"Points of Intrigue." Here's word:
In the PvE world Points of Intrigue
will pop up in random places infested by creatures or NPCs. Some will require a
few players to clear out, others will require multiple groups. The more
complicated the Point of Intrigue the better the rewards for capturing it.
Rewards will include longer term buffs that will aid your player during your
play session, as well as the usual assortment of engagement rewards. Once a
Point of Intrigue has been captured, any player who visits that location will
receive a receive a buff for a period of time. Some Points of Intrigue will also
spawn special NPCs who are only available upon their completion. Once the timer
expires, a new Point of Intrigue will appear somewhere else in the world,
attracting players to the new challenge.
Happy birthday to link-meister
Ant. As a gift, I present you the best football
weekend of the season, as the four-game championship weekend is upon us, which
will be followed by just three more games over the next three weeks. Putting a
poor showing during the season behind me, I hit three of the games last week,
and tied with RoboNerd for the lead in
our
little playoff pool, and all my brackets remain intact. So there, enjoy the
games if you're watching, and happy birthday Ant, and thanks, as always, for
supplying all the great links over the years.
