The alpha version of Elite Dangerous now includes support for Track IR,
3D TVs, and the Oculus Rift VR headsets, reports
Rock, Paper, Shotgun, where they offer first-hand impressions of playing
Frontier's upcoming space combat sequel using the Oculus Rift. VR support is
still a work-in-progress with the key element of cross-hairs still missing, for
instance, but they came away impressed. Here's a
recent gameplay video
they link (which does not show Oculus Rift support) and here's word: All
the impressive, immersive tricks the HUD needed to pull to help you to track a
target aren’t needed when you can just move my head. It changed everything. I
tracked the ship for a little bit, watching it slink through the asteroids. I
could still see the jets burn as he twisted away in front of me, though in the
confines of the Rift he now felt further away. I boosted to keep him close, but
instead of locking on to keep track, I just watched, tilting my head as he swam
to the left of my view and then following with the ship’s controls. If you think
about that for a second, you’ll realise it reverses a lot of what’s true in
dog-fighting situations without head-tracking: I’d have had to keep up with it
before to keep it in view, constantly adjusting to keep it in sight. Now I knew
exactly where I was turning to, which enabled me to adjust my speed a lot more
accurately. The ship was never out of my view, though the missing crosshair did
cause me some trouble with aiming. I won’t be ending this piece with a
triumphant final blast of my weapons. Continue here to read the full story.
Nordic Games reveals plans for the MX vs. ATV IP
they they acquired earlier this year as part of
the dissolution of the assets of bankrupt THQ, announcing MX vs. ATV
Supercross, a new installment in the series expected in the first half of
next year for Windows, OS X, Linux, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. This is being
developed by a team that includes some of the developers from previous
installments in the off-road racing series along with other "high-profile
developers." Here's the news: 2014 promises to be a very happy New Year
for fans of extreme racing, as Nordic Games has unveiled its plans to revive the
best-selling MX vs. ATV series.
Nordic Games secured the rights to the MX vs. ATV series as part of its
agreement to acquire a range of THQ’s intellectual property earlier this year.
Now the firm can reveal it has assembled a team of former MX vs. ATV staff along
with other, high-profile developers to properly resurrect the franchise. This
dedicated team will be taking it to even greater heights while retaining the
ingredients that made MX vs. ATV so successful. It's no coincidence the team is
based in Phoenix Arizona where it all began in the mid-90s. Perhaps one can be
forgiven for borrowing from the well-worn cliché: the Phoenix has truly risen
from the (digital) ashes.
Led by Ken George and comprising of numerous MX vs. ATV staff along with game
development veterans including Dave Dwire, Chris Gilbert, Mike Mamula, Brad
Bowling, Scott Hofmann, Justin Walsh, and David Knudsen, the new team’s first
title will be MX vs. ATV Supercross due for release in the first half of 2014
for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac and Linux. As the title suggests, MX vs.
ATV Supercross is centered around the popular Supercross sport and has the scope
of a downloadable game.
The team is also maintaining the existing MX vs. ATV Alive and MX vs. ATV Reflex
code and bringing back as many features as possible including multiplayer on
consoles, Motoclub Depot, and more to be announced soon.

A
community Q&A about Tom Clancy's: The Division has further details on
the advanced Snowdrop engine that will be behind the upcoming tactical shooter
(thanks
Eurogamer).
They describe their goal of creating a "detailed, stunning, diversified and
immersive world that reacts to your actions." They wrap things up saying they
plan a "full-fledged" PC edition of the game: As you know, Massive has its
roots in PC development. We are working hard and we want to make sure that we
have a very high quality experience on PC. You can be sure that our PC version
won’t be a port, but a full-fledged, optimized version! We want to create the
best game possible regardless of what platform you play on.
The Red 5 board of directors has voted Mark Kern out as CEO of the
company he co-founded, reports
Game Front, which may be part of the reorganization they
announced a few
months ago along with word they were re-working PvP in
Firefall, their MMORPG. Kern is
the former team lead for World of Warcraft, and was the last of the four
Blizzard expatriates who co-founded Red 5 to leave the company, which is now
owned by Chinese publisher The9, and word is he is out "effective immediately."
GameFront has an internal mail on the topic says they "owe Mark a great deal of
appreciation" for his work on the company and the game, for all that he
has done to help build this company and to set the vision for an incredible new
game" and that this is a "major change" to the company."
This NeoGAF thread
covers the recent discovery of a new
flag on Steam games called "AllowCrossRegionTradingAndGifting," which from
the name appears to allow region-locking for Steam trades and gifts. Word is
this is present in the just-released METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE where
the flag is set to "no." According to the thread, this seems to currently only
apply to South America and Eastern Europe and that it does not affect retail
game keys. Thanks

Blizzard is delaying open beta testing of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
to ensure their upcoming virtual card game is ready for more widespread testing.
They also announce that all those who applied for the closed beta before
December 16th are being allowed in right now and that eventually plan on
allowing all applicants into the closed beta, saying signups for this will end
on January 7th. Here's
the explanation from
Battle.net: With all of that said, we believe the right thing to do
for the game is to not rush it out into open beta, but to instead hold onto it a
little longer to make sure it’s ready for wider testing. At BlizzCon, we
mentioned that we hoped to get the game into a state where it’s ready for open
beta this month, but we’re just not quite there yet. The development team has
been working hard to get this out before the end of the year, but our highest
priority is that Hearthstone has an awesome launch when all gates are lifted and
everyone can download it and play at the same time.
We’re close to the open beta—very close. And to enter this final part of our
beta phase, we need your help. Keep trying out new decks, reporting bugs, and
giving your feedback on our forums. That’s the best way you can help the team
get Hearthstone into everyone’s hands as soon as possible.

Well I managed a double-dose of dumb yesterday. With things slowing down for the
holidays I ran some
errands yesterday afternoon because for some reason I thought the Steam winter
sale would begin today, and did not want to delay mentioning that, which is
exactly what my miscalculation caused. My trip included a
not-short drive to a friend's house where I ended up accidentally taking his
mobile phone with me, since it looks just like mine, so now I have to repeat my not-short drive today to get it back in
his hands, so it really would have worked out far better if I'd planned this for
today in the first place. I'd probably be pretty Dr. McCoy (yes, that's now an
adjective) about transporters if they existed, but I sure wish I had access to one right now.
