Archived News:
Steam Community announces a new batch of titles greenlit by the Steam
Greenlight process. 32 new games have gotten the thumbs-up from the community,
and they offer a list for easier browsing, and the following word: These
titles were selected on the same criteria we have been using in the past: Votes
in Greenlight give us a hugely valuable point of data in gauging community
interest along with external factors such as press reviews, crowd-funding
successes, performance on other similar platforms, and awards and contests to
help form a more complete picture of community interest in each title.
While they were Greenlit today, these titles will be released independently in
the weeks or months ahead, as they complete development and integrate any
Steamworks features they are interested in utilizing.
Capcom announces the release of the
promised six new maps for Lost Planet 3, their space shooter sequel.
The new maps are divided into three separate two-map packs, and they are being
offered for sale alongside several other DLC packs of content that was
previously offered as preorder incentives.
EverQuest II website
reveals a new offer to attract new players to SOE's long-running MMORPG, as
those who log in over the next two weeks will be given a level 85 character,
allowing them to skip a lot of messy game playing (thanks
PC Gamer). This
producer's letter explains, and here's a bit: Former players don’t
want to play catch-up to Level 95, existing players don’t want to start over at
Level 1 with their friends, and some players just want to get into high-end
guilds and raids because that’s what they love to do. There’s been a lot of
great feedback that led us to create Heroic Characters.
The goal is to provide a fun and easy option for existing and returning players
to play or experiment with our characters and have immediate access to
high-level content. And we think we’ve created a great program for
everyone!
A post to the
Eidos Montreal blog has a post about what they are up to that includes plans
for Deus Ex Universe, an "ongoing, expanding and connected game world
built across a generation of core games" as well as a new Deus Ex game coming to
Windows and consoles. They include a piece of concept art and this write-up from
David Anfossi: The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an
ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core
games. It’s a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands
the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span
several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience
than ever before. Deus Ex: Universe will include PC and console games, but also
additional Deus Ex games and experiences available in other media such as
tablets, smartphones, books, graphic novels, etc... You might have seen the name
pop up recently in the press – well this is what it’s all about. I’m pleased to
confirm that we are already into production of the starting point for Deus Ex:
Universe with a new game for PC and next-generation consoles. We’re very excited
about it at the studio and I wanted to let you know that most of the team behind
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is already working hard on this new game. It took us
four years to learn how to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human
Revolution and it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the
franchise.
I want to leave you with
a piece of concept art from our next-gen Deus Ex game that shows
trans-humanism segregation, which is a backdrop to our vision for the next Deus
Ex. It represents a "ghetto-city' voluntarily built in order to separate the
classes. The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment,
nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance. This dark and dystopian vision
sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex. For now, I hope you are excited
about the future of this game that we love so much. Deus Ex is coming to
next-gen, it’s early so don’t expect to hear much more from us just yet, but I
wanted you to know. I'm very excited as a developer and gamer!
A post on NeoGAF
says Valve's
Project Management Portal mysteriously opened to the public last night,
showing a development team is in place for Half-Life 3. This is no longer
accessible, but
Rock, Paper, Shotgun verifies viewing it and seeing a listing for 10 "core"
developers and another 46 in a "Half-Life 3 group." This comes closely after
the revelation of a European Trademark for
Half-Life 3, fuelling hopes Valve's neglected FPS flagship will sail again.
bitComposer Entertainment announces the release of Air Conflicts: Vietnam
on Steam, offering the
chance to take off with a new installment in this aerial combat series. Here's
the deal: Fans of arcade flight action games will experience
heart-stopping aerial battles as the Navy pilot Joe Thompson. In the dramatic
single-player campaign, players can pilot over 20 helicopters and airplanes,
every single one authentic down to the last detail. In order to succeed at the
diverse array of exhilarating missions, pilots must dig deep into their bag of
tricks. Before missions begin, players can pick the weapons mounted on their
squadron’s aircraft and freely switch between them during the course of battle,
hence allowing them to always be perfectly equipped to face their opponents. In
addition to the compulsory missions, players also have the option of taking on
optional assignments to delve deeper into the story of the game, as well as
prove their mettle in rescue and battle assignments.
Phase Interactive announces Defect SDK, which is not a Software Development
Kit for a game called Defect, but rather a space combat and construction game
coming to Windows, OS X, and tablets next year, with the SDK representing
"Spaceship Destruction Kit." An official website
is online, offering details and an
announcement trailer
showing off the game, highlighting an odd gameplay element of "inevitable" crew
defection also stressed in the announcement. Here's word: Defect SDK
allows the player to build the ultimate ship piece by piece, from the size of a
single-pilot fighter to a space station the size of a small moon. Create
devastating spacecraft capable of obliterating your foes, but keep in mind that
your crew will defect, forcing you to face your own creation in battle. Offering
unprecedented freedom of creation, players will build the most powerful ships in
the galaxy with an easy to use tile-based building system, the game will feature
hundreds of parts across three stylistic themes referencing sci-fi movies and
shows from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. How do you build the perfect ship to
complete your objective, but also build in flaws that can be exploited later
when your crew inevitably defects? Continue here to read the full story.
Blizzard announces the in-game goodies being handed out at BlizzCon 2013,
which takes place early next month in Anaheim, CA. These will be given to all
attendees, as well as those who participate in the gaming convention from home
through a BlizzCon Virtual
Ticket. They are covering four games with their virtual gifts, which are a
World of Warcraft pet, a Diablo III banner, a StarCraft II
portrait and decal, and a mystery minion card for their upcoming Hearthstone:
Heroes of Warcraft.
Steam News announces
that Game Dev Tycoon on Steam
is now updated to add the promised Linux support to this simulation of the
crunch-filled, ramen-eating life of a startup game developer. The new version
also enhances the games storyline and adds Steam Trading Cards. To celebrate the
news, they are now offering the game at a 20% discount.
Daikatana is now available
on Steam, offering the
chance to check out the shooter and be The Romero's bitch for just $6.99 (though
it's been cheaper: the game was free for a while years
ago on GameTap). The sci-fi game
featuring a magical sword and a pair of AI sidekicks was intended as the
flagship title from ION Storm, an honor which turned out to be shared by Deus
Ex and Anachronox, but the game seems to be in witness protection, as
no developer is listed. Thanks nin.
Here's a
Kickstarter campaign from Missing Worlds Media for The Phoenix Project -
City of Titans, an MMORPG they hope will serve as a spiritual successor to
City of Heroes/City of Villains, the online superhero game. They plan on
licensing the Unreal Engine for the game, and are looking to raise at least
$320,000 for licensing and development costs. They note some setbacks they've
previously overcome as an "all-volunteer effort" in explaining their risks and
challenges, and all the concept art provided looks preliminary. Thanks Zarkonis.
After some difficulties connecting, I got to check out a bit of GTA Online
yesterday. This was pretty fun, but also chaotic, at times I felt like one of
the game's countless computer-controlled pedestrians from the way other players would just
appear out of nowhere to shoot me, crash into me, steal my car etc. A little
later we figured out how to start a non-public game, and things made more sense.
I see one of the options is to create crew-only games, so I look forward to
playing with those of you in the
Blue's
News Crew. I'll be the one who has no idea what he's doing.
