Archived News:
This trailer is a
brief teaser for a game called Sword of the Stars: Ground Pounders, an extension
of the SotS series which, as far as we know, has not actually been announced by
Kerberos Productions (thanks Gamer's Hell). There's not much to go by in the trailer
except indications that this is a sci-fi wargame using virtual cards, and word
that it's "coming soon." According to the description, we should:
"Stay tuned for info on PC/mobile demos and more about the game itself!" They
also have a link to a preliminary
website where you can sign up for alerts. Continue here to read the full story.
The
Codemasters Blog has the news that GRID 2 will officially incorporate
modification support, which is a first for Codemasters. The post describes what
they are calling "Mod Support V1.0," basic support for PC gamers that will be
separated from the version of the game used for competition with other players.
This is a previously unannounced inclusion in their upcoming
Community Patch and they also include an update on that patch with the
latest details, though an ETA is not yet offered. Here's word: Previously,
some of our game's files were protected against modification. This was intended
as a defence against cheating, mostly during online play, but also when setting
lap times or earning achievements. When the modification of a protected file has
been detected the game would disable online access, achievements and would also
prevent any saving from occurring.
However, we understand that many mods are made with absolutely no intent of
inconveniencing other players. These guys want to play the game in their own
way, but as it stood the game would not save their progress if they were to
modify a protected file.
So we’ve decided to assist these players by adding some basic support to the
game that allows modified data and when enabled the game will now save your
progress. Please note that the save file is separate to the one used by the
unmodified game and online play, leaderboards, achievements and RaceNet
functionality will all be disabled to protect the integrity of the main
game.

The Battlefield Blog kicks off a new series of articles called "The Road to
Battlefield 4" with a first installment called "Dialing Up The Team Play" with
an in-depth look at multiplayer support in Battlefield 4, DICE's upcoming military shooter
sequel. On the topic, a new
trailer from the game shows off the game with a French narration that's all
Greek to us. Here's a bit from the diary for those who say they want a
levolution: Levolution is an overarching design concept incorporating a
lot of features both big and small, that all affect gameplay in some way. You’ve
probably already seen what it can do to skyscrapers but it also includes
features like changing weather conditions that affects visibility, car alarms
and metal detectors alerting players of enemy presence, or the ability to
completely shroud a building in darkness and take out the enemies within using
your IRNV scopes. Much more than just massive feats of destruction or pretty
graphics, the exciting thing about Levolution is how it affects gameplay. From
bringing down a skyscraper to securing a zone from enemy vehicles by raising
bollards to block entry, Levolution will let you dynamically shape every game.
And like so many other elements in Battlefield 4, Levolution also ties into the
team play aspect of the game. Continue here to read the full story.
A new video developer
diary #2 (NSFW) for Saints Row IV called "What Happens in Space..."
discusses in detail the intricacies of the plot in the upcoming installment in
the open-world action series. Just when you think they're drinking their own
Kool-Aid, they break out the crazy and start anal probing aliens. Here's the
official party line: "This week's exclusive 'behind the scenes' video will
center on the story and the endless possibilities inside the game. Jim Boone,
Senior Producer, Steve Jaros, Creative Director and Chris Claflin, Lighting
Lead, from Volition and two actors Terry Crews (voice of Ben King) and Troy
Baker (default player voice) share their thoughts on how the virtual world of
Steelport allowed them to cross even more boundaries than before." The game is
due in North America on August 20th and in Europe on August 23rd. Continue here to read the full story.

An article on
the J.U.L.I.A. website is part one of a retrospective from CBE Software
called "Surviving IndieGoGo," chronicling their experiences as indies "in the
chaotic crowdfunding world." You may recall they
publically dumped their publisher before
going the crowdfunding route
for their upcoming J.U.L.I.A. Enhanced Edition. The tale of their success
is interesting, and may provide help for other developers, as word is: "I don’t
think of myself as a “crowdfunding expert”. But as one indie who has gone
through a very difficult process successfully and considering the kindness that
was given to me; I can only hope that my experiences and lessons learned might
be helpful to those out there hoping that crowdfunding can make their creative
dreams come true."
A new Domain of Day trailer
from Aaru's Awakening offers a look at this upcoming platformer from

playable demo was released earlier this
summer. Continue here to read the full story.

Ugh, another downside of using a smartphone as an alarm clock: A dead battery
means no alarm. This actually struck me this morning after hitting snooze, so I
came this close to avoiding being tripped up by this.
