Trion Worlds announces the alpha server is back online for
End of Nations
following their changes from an MMORTS game to a MOBA. "We received a tremendous
amount of positive feedback from our last round of Alpha and Beta testing – and
applied those learnings [sic] to the game, boiling it down to the strongest core
game elements –tactical combat, session-based gameplay, and vastly improved hero
units," said Scot Lane, Executive Producer of End of Nations. "Our core fans
have been tremendous during this stage of early development. We are now
confident we have the game the fans have been waiting for: a tremendously
powerful tactical game that fans of war games and strategy will love." Here's
more on the reworked game: Gamers will notice dramatically smaller teams
of two to four players, more focused objectives, better balance, more emphasis
on commander abilities and four new classes to choose from, which will
substantially improve matchmaking and queuing.
Additionally, players can level up on the fly in-game with new streamlined
tactical leveling that allows for quick adjustments during combat – all of which
could be the difference between domination and annihilation.

The Sven Co-op website has details on how
the Sven Co-op mod for the original Half-Life is becoming a standalone game, as
Valve is granting the team behind the modification access to the full Half-Life
source code to create a custom version of the engine. The standalone game will
be offered for free on Steam, and will not require ownership of the original
Half-Life (though it's hard to imagine someone would be interested in this
project but would not pay the $2.49 it would cost to get the game right now
on Steam). Word is: "Full
engine access will allow many previously impossible features to be added to the
game, as well as new functionality for Half-Life's level editor, Hammer.
Features such as Steam achievements will also be possible." No ETA for the
standalone edition is offered yet.
A
Kickstarter is now underway for 7 Days to Die, the voxel-powered
zombie survival/horror game announced
exactly two months ago by The Fun Pimps Entertainment. They hope to raise
$200K to support the game's development, and offer an extensive set of stretch
goals that lists what the game will include all the way through the $3 million
funding mark. Here's part of their pitch: We have a lot of experience but
we’re still too small of a team to finish this ambitious game with all of the
great features we'd like to add and need an additional $200,000 to hire the
extra, artists, animators and programmers to do it right.
If we reach our target goal we’ll invest every dollar raised into the
development of 7 Days to Die and we have a great list of features and
improvements outlined in our stretch goals which we’d love to add. We don’t want
to make just any zombie game we want to make “The Zombie Game” that defines all
zombie games!

It's an impressive development to add the ability to receive Emergency Broadcast
Network alerts on mobile phones, as this seems a far more reliable way to warn
people about emergencies than via TV and radio alerts. Last night seemed to be
an overreach in this regard, however, as my phone started screeching at 3:51 am
to inform me that there was an Amber Alert in Manhattan for a tan Lexus. It's
not that a missing child isn't a serious matter, but waiting until almost 4:00
am to broadcast an alert for a child abducted by her mentally ill mother
some 12 hours before more than 50 miles away doesn't seem the most logical
use of the system, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was some sort of mistake.
Anyway, here's hoping they find that baby and her mom and that everyone's okay.
P.S.: Sorry about the delayed update this morning, as it had to wait for Network
Solutions to sort out its DNS services.
