Steam News announces that
Xenonauts is now available
on Steam as an early
access release, offering eager players a crack at the work-in-progress versions
of this xenophobic strategy game. Word is: "This project is a huge undertaking
for an indie studio but by purchasing an Early Access copy, you are adding more
funds to our development pot and helping us improve the final product. It saves
you some money too, as we will be raising the price of the final game for
release!" Here's the deal on the game and its XCOM-inspired aspirations: Xenonauts
is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation
defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of
persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their
technology in turn-based ground combat.
An update on Steam News
has word that version 1.1.00 of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
is now available as part of the new action/RPG's patch-a-thon, offering free
DLC: The Scenario DLC enables players to fight high-level monsters that
are above the level 30 threshold throughout the new levels reachable from the
Secret Lair. Additional levels will be added to the Scenario DLC throughout the

updates, players will earn ’’Heroic Deeds” to boost their character to an even
more legendary status as they slay the mysterious threats to the world of
Borgovia.
The Path of
Exile website has details on a major patch coming on Wednesday, June 5 (NZ time),
bringing the open beta of Grinding Gear Games' action/RPG to version 0.11.0. The
post stresses it is not the patch notes, but rather an outline of the many major
changes in the new version, which adds support for
four-month leagues (the first of which will start just days after the patch), new
base and unique items, challenges as a precursor to an achievement system, a
"substantial rebalance," a one-off full respec for all characters in
acknowledgment of all the changes, and more. Thanks S.TODD.
This new trailer shows
off features of EVE Online: Odyssey, the next expansion for CCP's
spacefaring MMORPG. The new content will launch on Tuesday, and

all the changes the new add-on will bring. We can't embed the trailer because
this is disabled for some reason.
Kotaku has a new rumor about Prey 2, the sequel said to be "in limbo"
when last we hear in October of last year. They
say the sci-fi shooter that was started by Human Head is being rebooted by
Dishonored developer Arkane Studios. This sounds plausible, but Kotaku admits
this tidbit "from a tipster claiming to be connected to the project" was sketchy
enough that they held off on reporting it until a similar report
on alien.noire
calling this a "vicious rumor."

Kotaku - I Freelanced On Halo 4. It's Time For Gaming's Contractors To
Strike. Thanks
HARDOCP.
This article was written in hopes to inspire all would-be workers to not
accept positions as contractors in the game industry. I am not simply
speaking about Quality Assurance. We at CA had contract audio designers,
coders, and level designers. A lot of the amazing concept artists were
contractors as well. It is a flawed system, and it will get you nowhere. (I
realize that this is a gross generalization but I am sticking to that
statement.)

The
Kickstarter for Son of Nor concluded yesterday, with this
action/adventure from stillalive studios scratching out its $150K funding goal
with under one percent to spare. They are continuing to accept donations via
Paypal and urge supporters to back their
Steam
Greenlight campaign as they turn their attention to developing the game. "We
are thrilled, delighted and very grateful for the support we have received in
making our Kickstarter a success. The team have been overwhelmed by the positive
comments and the amount of people that have come out to back our final stages of
development for Son of Nor." Said Julian Mautner, CEO, stillalive studios. "We
have Son of Nor live on Steam Greenlight now and we are hopeful those who have
got behind us on Kickstarter, as well as Steam users and other gamers, will
support us and vote here too."
Two Tribes announces July 2nd is the release date for the Windows and OS X
editions of Toki Tori 2 on Steam, saying they are rewarding users for
the wait for a port of the Wii U puzzle/platformer with an enhanced edition they
have dubbed Toki Tori 2+. The
Two
Tribes blog justifies this plus sign, saying the Steam edition will include
additional puzzles, steps to prevent players from getting stuck early on, a
level editor, and Steam Workshop support. A
forum post confirms they plan to bring this level editor to the Wii U
edition, as well.
Publisher bitComposer announces the release of Expeditions: Conquistador
on Steam for Windows,
Linux, and OS X, offering a 10% discount on the strategy/RPG for the next week.
They provide a new gameplay
trailer to celebrate the news, and here's a bit about the game, which will
depict the suffering of the Spanish conquistadors at the hands of the savage
natives they encountered in the harsh new world: "Conquer the New world: In the
16th Century, Spanish explorers and soldiers reached the shores of America. The
search for gold, fame, and adventure drove these travelers into a treacherous
wilderness where they faced hunger, disease, and dangerous predators. In their
wake, the Aztec Empires lay in ruins."
Kalypso Media sends along a note about what will be in the box in their upcoming
retail version of Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, which will be
released in various international territories on June 14th. The days of cloth
maps in standard editions are long gone, and the contents along with the 4X
space game are pretty minimal, though it will include the OST. All told they
promise: "a fully illustrated manual, CD soundtrack, a double sided poster and a
hotkey card."
Outer Grid Games now offers digital
distribution of Crayon Chronicles, a roguelike turn-based RPG featuring
hand-scrawled graphics. A playable demo is available to sample, and here's word
on the game: Crayon Chronicles has a relatively short (2-4 hours per
play-through) but action-packed RPG experience that randomly generates the level
layouts each time you play.
You are encouraged to play through the game more than once thanks to the random
nature of the environment layouts, but also because we keep track of the
interesting facts about each play-through (in our newfangled "Heroic
Hallitorium") so you can compare your adventures to each other as well as to the
adventures of your friends.
A
post on the Steam Forums by the developer of Lunar Flight discusses
how the retail life of this indie simulator is probably at an end, saying the
game's likely final update will be to add Oculus Rift support to try to
capitalize on the attention that will go to the first games to use the device.
As noted on
Kotaku, perhaps the most interesting part of all this is his unusually frank
discussion of the game's commercial success, saying he netted about $100K
personally after expenses from a game that grossed about $200K after selling
approximately 50K copies. In this he notes his own experience was consistent with
something Valve has stated before about some games generating more income
through discounts than at full-price, saying that about 75% of the game's income
came from being on sale. By the way,
Lunar Flight on Steam is
currently 50% off. Thanks nin.
The first batch of GTX 770 reviews
went up yesterday.
In an unusual turn of events, the Mets completed their season sweep of the
Yankees last night. How unusual? It's the first time in the 16 years of
interleague play the Amazin's have managed to sweep the season from their big
brothers. To highlight how sad that is, we are talking about four games, so it
seems like they should have managed to pull this off sooner. And yes, this also
means it's silly for me to be so excited about this, but when you are a Mets
fan, you don't get that many positive moments (aside from Matt Harvey starts).
