A new update on SimCity from Barrie Tingle has word from the Maxis Live Operations Producer on the latest efforts at urban renewal for the management sequel:
Hello again, Mayors! Live Operations Producer Barrie Tingle here with another SimCity update. Quite a few things happened yesterday. Let’s go over each one:

  1. Server Upgrades: We’ve completed the migration of all our original servers to the new, faster/higher capacity server architecture. We’ll continue to provide ongoing optimizations for our servers.
  2. Server Status Page: Want to check the status of one of our servers? Now you can – the team created a server status page that lives on You can view it here:
  3. Patch 1.5: We’ve deployed a new patch yesterday to address some trade intermittency issues, which should make regional interaction more responsive. We’re going to continue to improve the speed between cities within a region. It should also decrease the chance of losing progress on your city via a rollback. You can view the full patch notes here.

That’s it. We’re continuing to optimize and improve the experience and will keep you informed of our future improvements.

Underrail Trailer; Alpha Released

The Underrail Website offers a new trailer from Underrail, an indie role-playing game of the old-school turn-based, isometric variety. For those who like what they see, the game is for sale in prerelease alpha form on Desura and GamersGate, and is the subject of a Steam Greenlight campaign. A playable alpha demo was released last summer, and this semi-recent developer blog explains what has changed since then, discussing modifying the game's economy for better balance. Here's an overview of Underrail:
Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat. It's inspired by western RPG classics such as Fallout, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights and System Shock 2.

The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth's surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

Humans Must Answer Kickstarter

A new Kickstarter seeks a modest £5,000 to develop Humans Must Answer, an "explosive 2D shmup" proposed by Sumom Games, a new developer composed of veterans of GSC Game World where they helped developer the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of irradiated shooters. They are not playing hardball with this, however, saying the game will be released whether or not their Kickstarter succeeds, and that the funds they seek are to cover "living costs and start-up costs that go into finishing and distributing the game." They have a full complement of stretch goals if they rake in more than requested, ranging all the way to a standalone co-op campaign if they hit the £75,000 mark. A trailer from last year's IGF offers a look at the game. Here's word:
Quite simply, Humans Must Answer is a 2D horizontal shoot 'em up, or shmup for short, set in the distant future. It features lots of explosions. You play as the pilot on board a Scout ship called The Golden Eagle, which is manned by a crew of intelligent and dangerous chickens. It's a small but agile ship that packs some devastating weaponry. Being proud of their avian heritage, these chickens crafted the ship in the image of an Eagle to represent their strength and proud nature...but they'd never admit to their inferiority complex.

Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Confirmed

CD Projekt RED's upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 will include multiplayer, reports Eurogamer, where they quote CD Projekt RED managing director Adam Badowski saying: "It will be a story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs, but we're going to add multiplayer features." They discuss how this game allows more flexibility for player decisions compared to The Witcher series, which is less conducive to multiplayer play (he actually laughs at a question about a Witcher MMOG). The article also discusses progress on Cyberpunk 2077 towards its 2015 release, saying that the development team will be bolstered by Witcher developers following next year's release of The Witcher 3.

Out of the Blue

Happy new year! I figure it's been too long since we added another one of these to our list of celebrations, so today we commemorate the start of the new NFL year. Actually, there is a sad aspect of this for me, this means it's very likely Ahmad Bradshaw will soon end up with a new team after a sterling career with the Giants that leaves him very high on my list of all-time favorite players. It seems quite unlikely he'll end up back with the team, so I just have to hope he doesn't end up on one of the teams I really hate, because it will be very hard to root against a player with so much heart that he turned being an afterthought selected in the seventh round of the draft into being a star player instrumental in two Super Bowl championships. I think I'll just spend some time fondly watching this highlight reel on a loop.
