Steam now offers
sales of the soundtrack for Hotline Miami
, presented in MP3 format, in spite of an erroneous boilerplate note saying this is DLC that requires ownership of the throwback action game to play. Speaking of owning the game, it is currently on sale for 50% off, which makes it half the price of the soundtrack. It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife, right Alanis?

The details from yesterday's report
on the breakup of now-defunct THQ can now be confirmed. Koch Media owned Deep Silver announces the acquisition of developer Volition, saying that this comes with the IP for the Metro
series of shooters as well as Saints Row
, the highly regarded open world action series, saying: "Koch Media and Deep Silver will roll out future plans for each franchise in the coming months." According to a tweet
from Distressed Debt Investing, this came at the price of $22.3 million. That same tweet says SEGA paid $26 million for Relic, Ubisoft (who tweeted confirmation of their purchases
) paid and $2.5 million for THQ Montreal, and that Take-Two shelled out $11 million for Evolve
(which apparently includes Left 4 Dead
developer Turtle Rock Studios), and Develop
adds that 1666
is one of the IPs Ubisoft picked up along with THQ Montreal. Another tweet
says Koch paid $5.8 million for Metro, Crytek picked up the rights to Homefront
(not Homeland, as they say) for $500K, and Ubisoft's tab for South Park: the Stick of Truth
was $3.2 million. They also affirm there were No bids for Vigil
(though IGN reports Bayonetta
developer Platinum Games may still make a play for the Darksiders
studio). What remains of THQ announces
the court has granted a motion to approve these sales, offering the following overview:
Continue here to read the full story
THQ Inc. (OTC: THQIQ), a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, today announced that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court has granted a motion to approve a sale of the majority of THQ’s assets to multiple buyers. The company expects the Court to enter a formal order tomorrow.
The Court approved the sales of three of THQ’s owned studios and games in development, as well as Evolve, a working title under development at Turtle Rock Studios, Homefront 2, Metro: Last Light and South Park: The Stick of Truth. Under the terms of the agreements with the successful and approved bidders, the THQ estate will receive approximately $72 million, making the total estimated value of the estate $100 million including certain assets and other intellectual properties which were excluded from the sale.
The Court approved the sale of Relic Studios to Sega Corporation for $26.6 million; the sale of Volition Inc. and Metro: Last Light to Koch Media GmbH for $22.3 million and $5.9 million, respectively; the sale of Homefront 2 to Crytek GmbH for $0.5 million; the sale of Evolve to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. for $10.9 million; and the sale of THQ Montreal and South Park: The Stick of Truth to Ubisoft LLC for $2.5 million and $3.3 million, respectively. Excluded from the sales were the company’s publishing businesses, Vigil Games, and certain other assets and intellectual properties, which will remain part of the THQ estate and will continue in the Chapter 11 process.
is a new campaign looking to crowdsource funding to acquire the Homeworld
IP, as the highly regarded space-based RTS series was apparently not one of the assets SEGA picked up when they bought developer Relic from THQ (thanks VG247
). The site was launched by startup indie developer teamPixel, and here's what they say they are attempting to accomplish:
13 years ago, one of the most legendary sci-fi games was released, and the space RTS genre took a giant leap forward in innovation and fun. Yet, somehow, nearly 10 years later, fans are still waiting for the next installment of the Homeworld franchise. We here at teamPixel, LLC are tired of waiting for the next Homeworld game and would like to rally fans together to bring the franchise back. The THQ bankruptcy has given all of us a massive opportunity to put Homeworld back in the hands of gamers. teamPixel respectfully requests the support of Homeworld fans everywhere in helping us raise funds to acquire the Homeworld franchise from THQ during their bankruptcy. With the franchise in hand, we would be able to pursue 3 initiatives for reviving the series:
- Homeworld on GoG.com and Steam. Easier access for old and new fans alike!
- Homeworld Touch - A legendary game with a modernized interface!
- Homeworld 3. Enough said.
CBE Software announces the cancellation of their publishing agreement with Lace Mamba Global, saying the publisher has failed to meet its financial obligations for PC game J.U.L.I.A.
and iOS title J.U.L.I.A. Untold
. They also announce that J.U.L.I.A. is now the subject of a Steam Greenlight campaign
to support a remastered version of the adventure game that addresses some comments from users. Here's word:
Jan Kavan, director at CBE software, comments upon the current situation: "It's an extremely sad ending of the past four years of our life. We've created the game using our very own budget without any external funding yet we were able to create a title we are really proud of. When well-known publisher, whom we have trusted so much, behaved like that, it was an extremely demotivating experience for us. Moreover we've handed them both games as finished products so there was not any risk involved for them. Such nefarious behavior had an absolutely destructive impact on our small independent studio. Unfortunately similar story just recently announced by Colibri Games (Tiny Bang Story) ensured us that it's not a misunderstanding and that we have to act."
To recover from this situation CBE software would also like to announce that J.U.L.I.A. has been added to Steam Greenlight.
"We plan to do a remastered version with changing things which were not all that well received by players and we will include a bonus soundtrack as a part of the Steam release. Even if you own the game already, please upvote J.U.L.I.A. there. Steam could help us survive the situation and recover from this unexpected blow. If we get greenlit, we will also issue a patch for existing J.U.L.I.A. owners which will add the remastered functionality.“, finishes Jan Kavan.
The other day I mentioned I was facing the temptation to head out into the wilds of the backyard and fire up the man-stove to satisfy my prehistoric need for scorched meat. In an effort to show me the error of my ways, a wave of arctic air has invaded our area, along with much of the country, and it is shockingly cold out there, at least for those of us not used to the kind of climate one finds in Siberia or Minnesota. This has definitely cooled my enthusiasm, so to speak... I wonder what sort of outcome I could get with one of those electric George Foreman dealies. Yeah, probably not.
Confirming part of an earlier report
, Ubisoft announces the acquisition of THQ Montreal along with the publishing rights to South Park: The Stick of Truth
, seemingly in spite of the contention
of South Park Digital Studios that the rights to the game are not transferrable. It is apparently not clear
if this marks designer Patrice Desilets' return to Ubisoft after a a departure
that lead to some litigation
. Here's word:
Today, Ubisoft announced the acquisition of THQ Montreal as well as the publishing rights for the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth video game, being developed externally by Obsidian.
"This deal adds experienced developers to our internal creative teams at a key moment in the cycle of the video game industry," said Yannis Mallat, president of Ubisoft Montreal.
THQ Montreal In addition to the team at THQ Montreal, Ubisoft also acquired a new, yet-to-be announced IP in development at the studio. THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft's development teams, already the second-largest in-house development staff in the world with 26 studios in 19 countries and more than 6,250 people dedicated to video game production.
South Park: The Stick of Truth South Park: The Stick of Truth is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, and is scheduled for release in calendar 2013.
This acquisition has no material impact on Ubisoft's current fiscal year (2012/13).

Beginning on January 29 and ending on February 12 the Crysis 3 multiplayer beta will feature two of the eight modes included in Crysis 3. In Crash Site, players must secure and defend specific locations, earning points along the way for kills and their ability to hold those locations. The exciting, all-new Hunter mode makes its debut in Crysis 3. This asymmetrical, time based mode pits two players vs. ten (two vs. 14 on PC) in matches that begin with two cloaked hunters stalking 10 opposing CELL troopers. Armed only with enhanced Nanosuits and the lethal Predator bow, hunters must systematically stalk and kill the CELL operatives, who in turn must work together as a team as they fight to stay alive before the round ends. The twist is that once a CELL trooper is killed, that player will then respawn as a hunter, joining the others in their attempt to eliminate the remaining CELL operatives before the clock strikes zero. The Crysis 3 multiplayer beta will also showcase two of the game’s twelve visually stunning maps, Airport and Museum. Both will provide players a taste of the lush, urban rainforest and tactical sandbox that awaits them under the Liberty Dome of New York City.

Crysis 3 multiplayer also contains exciting new gameplay features including Rip & Throw, which allows players to interact with the elements of the environment to use as weapons or shields as well as the chance to control the Pinger, a fearsome alien tripod war machine that can be used to devastating effect.

an updated set of PTR patch notes for the upcoming version 1.07 update for Diablo III
. There is one new achievement listed along with a number of bug fixes for the action/RPG sequel, including some with the Public Test Realm itself. Arguably most significant is the change so that players are considered "elites" within the game, which will impact certain item effects in PvP combat. Looking beyond the release of this new patch in the live version of the game, a forum post from a Community Manager
says Blizzard is working to address player complaints that characters are merely the sum of their gear:
We know that (for many players) it’s much more rewarding to gear up from items that you find while playing normally than it is to necessarily go through Auction House, and we’re working to make improvements in that area. There are a lot of ways we could attempt to reach that goal, and choosing the best one(s) to go with is not always a fast process. I want to encourage you all to continue to post your thoughts on the subject and I promise we will keep reading and relaying them.
The Scivelation Product Section
(in German) has a new release date for Scivelation
, saying the single-player third-person shooter from Black Wing Foundations is planned for release by the end of
next year for Windows and "next-gen." The game was announced
as due in 2010, and German site GBase.ch
suggests the game's new release window might be to allow it to use Epic's upcoming Unreal Engine 4, but this is purely speculative. Update:
Corrected this to say next year, rather than this year. Apologies for the error and any ensuing confusion.

The SimCity Facebook Page
has a follow up to the story we helped break on Sunday
about worrisome language in the EULA for the upcoming SimCity
reboot suggesting beta testers would lose access to all EA games for failing to report bugs in the beta (thanks Joe). Here's word:
Heads up, Mayors – it’s been brought to our attention that there’s been some confusion regarding the bug-reporting policy in the EA beta test agreement for SimCity.
Don’t worry – EA has never taken away access to a player’s games for failing to report a bug. In fact, we’re in the process of updating our agreement to make this point clear before the beta starts this Friday. If you have any more questions, read our FAQ: http://bit.ly/UCpuAA
Hope to see you in the beta Friday!

Rockstar Games announces
a double live-streaming Social Club Multiplayer Event in Grand Theft Auto IV
for three hours on Friday, offering prizes for participants:
This Friday January 25th, 11am-2pm EST / 4-7pm GMT, our latest live-streaming Social Club Multiplayer Event invades Liberty City for three hours of melees, mayhem, and mischief in Grand Theft Auto IV. Come look for our dev players in-game on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, or tune in to our double live-stream on the Social Club Multiplayer Events page. There you'll also find our Rockstar-hosted Social Club chat and the chance to win one of ten GTAV prize packs, each including the GTAV Logo Tee, GTAV Tee, and GTAV and Rockstar logo stickers, in our giveaway.
We'll play a mix of original GTAIV modes, as well as The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony multiplayer modes, and you don't need to own the Complete Edition to play in the event - you can join us whenever we're playing a mode that you have. Our devs will clear their friends lists beforehand, and you can enter the giveaway on this page under the Sweepstakes Entry tab.
Two of our devs will be streaming their GTAIV gameplay live on the Social Club Multiplayer Event page with a live chat, and a third video stream will run on our Rockstar Twitch page with a second hosted chatroom.
I may be losing out in my literal cold war with MrsBlue over grilling rights. You may recall I am attempting a strike to gain the right to put my man-stove on the deck for general convenience, but in particular to be more accommodating in the winter. She's holding firm on her resolve, and I may be the first one to blink on this and resume using the grill where it is before the spring breaks. I feel so weak.
