Steam Linux Plans

Steam’d Penguins on the Valve Website has new details on Valve's progress in adding Linux support to Steam and their games. Here's word on their progress on a Linux Steam client and a Linux edition of Left 4 Dead 2:

The goal of the Steam client project is a fully-featured Steam client running on Ubuntu 12.04. We’ve made good progress this year and now have the Steam client running on Ubuntu with all major features available. We’re still giving attention and effort to minor features but it’s a good experience at the moment. In the near future, we will be setting up an internal beta focusing on the auto-update experience and compatibility testing.

Since the Steam client isn’t much without a game, we’re also porting L4D2 to Ubuntu. This tests the game-related features of the Steam client, in addition to L4D2 gameplay on Ubuntu. Over the last few months, excellent progress has been made on several fronts and it now runs natively on Ubuntu 12.04. We’re working hard to improve the performance and have made good progress (more on that in a future post). Our goal is to have L4D2 performing under Linux as well as it performs under Windows.

PC Awesomenauts Plans

Ronimo announces plans to bring Awesomenauts to Windows and OS X, which will offer PC owners the chance to play this MOBA game that was recently released for consoles. They don't specify a release date for the ports, but say that beta testing will begin within the week, and to keep an eye on the Awesomenauts Facebook Page for details on how to sign up. In the meantime, here's a trailer, some screenshots, and the announcement:

A few years ago we at Ronimo set out to create a great platforming MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game. This resulted in the release of Awesomenauts for XBLA and PSN a few months back. A great looking and addictive sidescrolling MOBA, a first for consoles. But ever since we've shown the first screens and videos, we've been getting tons of requests to also bring this game to PC.

Well, we agree! We love the idea of being able to play Awesomenauts with our friends through Steam using our trusty mice and keyboards. So we went ahead and actually built it! To speed things up we've been getting a lot of help and support from our fans, quickly translating new texts and giving us valuable feedback on the balance and new controls.

Within a month everyone will be able to grab a copy of Awesomenauts on Steam! Soon you will be able to experience the game using your favorite input devices. A Mac version will follow shortly afterwards.

Borderlands 2 Interview

An interview on Rock, Paper, Shotgun talks with Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software about Borderlands 2, the upcoming role-playing shooter sequel. At one point they imply Randy is a "tyrannical overlord." As if a tyrannical overlord would say: "I am the most accountable. I am the most responsible. There’s always a few very specific creative things that I care about that I’ll tend to get involved in the specific development of. I always take an overarching role where I’m responsible for the intent, responsible for where the money comes from and how we’re spending it. I make myself responsible for things that I think are important." Thanks nin.

The Ubisoft forums have an apology from Ubisoft for an outage in the Uplay service, which failed to live up to its name as Ubi's online DRM servers went down over the weekend, preventing their games from being authenticated and leaving them unplayable. Word is: "The Uplay PC service should now be up and running properly. Please try logging into your game and let us know if you have any issues," and word on Destructoid is that this us due to demand from the ongoing Steam sale, supported by Steam Support's retweet of Ubi's tweet about the outage (thanks Chris via Reddit).

Op Ed

Ars Technica - What happened to the stereoscopic gaming revolution?
Looking back today, it's hard to tell what all the fuss was about. While stereoscopic 3D is definitely present in today's gaming landscape, it has decidedly failed to become the revolutionary, must-have feature that seemed to warrant so much industry attention just a couple of years ago.

Out of the Blue

We got a lot of rain in these parts over the weekend, which was welcome, as at the end of last week we got a robo-call from our village prohibiting car washing and restricting lawn watering due to a drought emergency, so hopefully this well ease matters around here (where things are nowhere near as dramatic as most of the country). The downpour yesterday prevented me grilling, so I made some from-scratch sloppy joes, which were a huge hit.
