Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn Dawns

The Wing Commander Saga Website is in low-bandwidth mode in an effort to stay online amid the demand for the promised release of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, the fan-created project based on the Wing Commander series of space combat games. The Windows version is the first to be released, and they say the Linux and OS X editions are still in the works. They have a list of mirrors and the download can also be found on AtomicGamer and Gamer's Hell. Here's what they have to say to mark the occasion:

On many occasions, we have referred to Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn as a labor of love. That is truly what it has been for us. Many years ago, Chris Roberts and his team at Origin ignited our imaginations with their innovative, blockbuster Wing Commander series. Our hope has always been that with Wing Commander Saga, we could recapture that excitement and magic to some degree and share it with all of you. Our ten year development process has certainly taught us even more respect for just how innovative and brilliant Chris Roberts and his team are. Our development of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn is meant as an homage to them and what they achieved, and we would like to thank them and EA, who holds the intellectual property for Wing Commander. We would also like to thank all the sites who have generously offered to provide mirrors for Saga.

Modern Warfare 3 Double XP Weekend & PC Apology

Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling tweets that this is a double XP weekend in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, their military shooter sequel. Mists of Pandaria Beta Live

The World of Warcraft Website announces the Mists of Pandaria beta test is live in Blizzard's MMORPG. They say those selected to participate will receive an email invitation , though they warn to remain vigilant for potential phishing attempts. There is no NDA involved, so this will likely provoke a flood of previews and media. Here's more on the testing:

The World of Warcraft®: Mists of Pandaria™ beta test has begun! Over the course of the test, we’ll be inviting Annual Pass holders, press, fansites, friends and family, and opt-in beta testers to participate. This first phase of the beta focuses on the 1-10 starting experience for new Pandaren. High-level content as well as template characters will become available in future beta updates, but you can still copy over your own high level characters now if you’d like to test the new talent system.

More on Guild Wars 2 Microtransactions

The Guild Wars Facebook Page has more on the microtransaction system in Guild Wars 2, following up on the recent update on the ArenaNet Blog on the business model for the upcoming MMORPG sequel. Here's word:

Here are a few important clarifications about our microtransaction system. First, that gold is coming from other players. So somebody must have an abundance of gold if he trades it to a player. The system is not adding new gold from the outside.

Second, take into account the gem/gold trading system. Everything that is in the store will basically be available for gold with this system - so it doesn't really matter what is in the store, as it is also available for players who play and don't want to spend additional money. Hope that helps! ~RB2

ECA vs Video Games Labeling Act

The Entertainment Consumers Association now offers a resource for gamers in the U.S. to contact their representatives to express opposition to the H.R. 4204, the recently revealed bill that will require health warnings on video games in the U.S. should it be passed into law. They refute the science behind the warnings the "Violence in Video Games Labeling Act" would mandate, state the bill is also unconstitutional, and can help you inform congress of your opinion on this matter.

Vanguard Going Free-to-Play

The March 2012 Vanguard Producer's Letter announces Vanguard is going free-to-play. Here's word on the MMORPG jumping on the free bandwagon, or off the sinking subscription ship, depending on your outlook:

At SOE, giving players choices is the theme of how we're moving forward as a company. We see free-to-play (or as we refer to it, Free to Play. Your Way.) as a big part of our future and we like the flexibility it offers players. Therefore, I'm happy to announce Vanguard will be the next in line of our AAA games to make this transition. Since we've literally just begun on the work, I'm not ready to go into much detail. However, I will say that you can expect something similar to EverQuest®, EverQuest® II and DC Universe™ Online
