Take On Helicopters: Hinds

The Take On Helicopters Website has an announcement we missed a couple of weeks ago revealing plans for Take On Helicopters: Hinds, a new combat-oriented DLC pack for Bohemia Interactive's flight simulation (thanks Gamer's Hell, where they have a teaser trailer). The release date for this is March 15, 2012, and it will offer Mil Mi-24 V, Mi-24 P and Super Hind helicopter gunships, new single-player challenges, five time trials, and a new competitive multiplayer scenario. Here's word from Creative Director Jay Crowe:

With Take On Helicopters, our goal was to strike a balance between pure gaming – story-driven scenarios, challenges, time trials – and an authentic experience of flying a helicopter. Of course, that’s a tough job, but alongside the accessible controls, difficulty settings and optional assists, we’re glad to find a big range of people having fun flying helicopters in Take On.

Our game doesn’t demand you to have any previous flight (game) experience, nor does it matter if you want to play it with mouse-and-keyboard, a gamepad or, for that matter, a full-blown cockpit-setup. In that sense, the civil-aviation context – not to mention the wonderful Seattle as the setting – of Take On Helicopters was ideal, as it allowed us to create a fun set of missions, whilst keeping the primary focus upon flying helicopters.

On the other hand, after launching the game, we felt there was room to complement Take On Helicopters with a more ‘action-packed’ experience. Our Hinds DLC is perfect for those who are seeking the adrenaline rush of flying a classic military gunship and getting into combat.

Sons of Anarchy Game?

A tweet by Sons of Anarchy producer Kurt Sutter indicates they are looking at the possibility of a video game based on the FX TV series about an outlaw biker gang, as he says: "soon to be taking meetings about an SOA game. have a major gaming company interested. trying to figure out costs, platform and timing." A follow-up tweet indicates this would likely be browser-based: "to do a quality platform-based game costs tens of millions and takes years. we're toying with the idea of a high-end browser-based game." He also expresses surprise that something he tweeted out to his 100K+ followers got noticed, as he does not seem to grasp how the twitter machine works. Thanks Blend Games.

Apotheon Unveiled

The Alientrap Website unveils Apotheon, a new platformer action/RPG they've been working on since the release of Capsized (thanks Gamer's Hell). They offer the first couple of screenshots from the game, and the following outline:

Here are the first screenshots of Apotheon. We’ve been working on Apotheon since Capsized was released – it’s still early in development but we are making great progress and are beginning to playtest the game with friends and other developers.

Apotheon is a 2D platform action-rpg set on the rich stage of ancient Greek mythology. Hera, the queen of Olympus, has overthrown her husband Zeus, and taken his throne as ruler of the Gods. Bitter and scornful towards the race of mortals, she launches a murderous campaign to scour them from the earth. As humanity’s last champion, you must pass through the land of the dead, infiltrate Mount Olympus, and end the wrath of the Gods. With sword, spear, and shield in hand, you will sneak, conspire, loot, and battle your way through majestic palaces and chthonic depths as you climb towards godhood. Only by stripping the old gods of their powers, and taking control of the elements as your own, can humanity hope to survive the coming oblivion.

Apotheon will have both a sprawling, open-world singleplayer campaign where you climb your way to the top of Mount Olympus, gaining divine power and deadly enemies along the way, and online multiplayer battles with tactical bronze-age combat (spears and arrows!).

Final platforms and release date are still unknown, but the game will be a PC release first.

Both me (Lee) and Jesse will be at GDC next month – let us know if you’d like to meet!

Out of the Blue

Well tonight is the annual Academy Awards, and in grand tradition, we will probably not watch the show, which goes with our grand tradition of not seeing most of the nominated films until they show up on cable, well after the awards are handed out. It would definitely serve our needs better if the awards were a year later. Though I do have to admit, MrsBlue has been making noises about seeing Hugo this weekend, and if we manage to do that today, it would be two best picture nominees we'd have seen before the show. The last time that happened looks like it may have been 1998 when we saw the two nominated war movies: Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line.

Update: MrsBlue just clarified me that the Oscars are tomorrow night, which pretty much proves my point about how much I care.
