Unofficial Skyrim Performance Boost

The Bethesda Softworks Forums have a thread on a new utility for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim claiming to offer framerate improvements of up to 40% on CPU-constrained systems (thanks Acleacius). Here's the skinny:
This patch will improve your frame rate by up to 40% in all CPU-dependent situations, i.e. especially in cities. It works mostly by rewriting some x87 FPU code and inlining a whole ton of useless getter functions along the critical paths because the developers at Bethesda, for some reason, compiled the game without using any of the optimization flags for release builds.

There has been some confusion about the original dll file and the current one for Script dragon. Script Dragon's dinput8.dll is 592kb The non working TESV Accelerator dinput.dll is 74kb

Cradle Announced

The Flying Cafe for Semianimals Website reveals development of Cradle, their debut project that's coming to Windows PC in spring of 2012. They offer some screenshots, a teaser trailer, and the following description:
Cradle is a science-fiction first-person quest with freedom of movement. The story is built around the relations of the protagonist and a mechanical girl, who by enigmatic circumstances find themselves together in a yurt among the desert Mongolian hills. The player is to restore the lost functions of his companion's mechanical body parts and together reveal the mystery of the neglected entertainment park found not far from the yurt.

The Lure of the Dark Side

USA Today reports early indications that the dark side of The Force is strong with Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG (thanks Ant via TheForce.Net). Here are some stats:

  • They prefer the Dark Side of the Force. Of the more than 3.8 million characters created, there are 550,000 Sith Warriors and 510,000 Jedi Knights.
  • They have logged 28 million in-game hours – roughly equivalent to watching all six Star Wars movies, two million times.
  • They average more than five hours a day playing the game.
  • They have killed more than two billion non-player characters in the eight days since early game access began.

A playable demo is available, and here's more: "This twisted tale centers on two metal-heads in the midst of a zombie invasion.
