The Old Republic Code Issues

This thread and this one on the Star Wars: The Old Republic carry complaints from users who have received preorder copies of BioWare's MMORPG where the game activation code is unreadable in some cases (perhaps due to a garbled subspace transmission) and completely missing in others. Without codes, players will be unable to access the game after December 22nd, when the two day early access grace period concludes. There are various reports of forum and email replies from support on this topic that indicate this is being addressed to some degree or another, but there are also posts expressing concern that the two different issues (missing versus unreadable codes) are being confused with each other and the possibility that some support responses are dealing with this as if it concerned Origin preorders, which is does not. Thanks nin via Kotaku.

Steam Holiday Sale

The Steam Holiday Sale is now underway. In addition to savings, this incorporates two promotions, as outlined in these Holiday Sale Instructions. There are new deals each day, listed on the Steam Store Front Page along with a list of mega deals that offer the entire catalogues from several publishers for between 77% and 86% off. Here's word:

The Steam Holiday Sale is on now through Sunday, January 1, 2012. In addition to huge savings throughout the store, the 2011 sale features two special promotions that allow you to win like never before.

The Great Gift Pile challenges gamers to complete up to six objectives each day. Completion of each objective grants the chance to win a free game or discount coupons for select games available on Steam. If you don’t win, no worries, you’ll be given a piece of coal. But hold onto that coal!

Why?

Coal is the ticket to enter the Epic Holiday Giveaway. It’s called Epic because the top prize is every game on Steam. The more coal you have, the better your chance of winning. Players may alternatively choose to magically mix their coal into something shiny and new by “crafting” seven pieces into a gift from the Great Gift Pile. So this year receiving coal is a good thing.

Didn’t get what you want? Of course Steam allows you to trade coal and prizes with your friends.

Further details on these events and information on how it’s progressing may be found here.

Complete information on all the savings, daily deals, featured publisher game packs, compilations and more may be found on www.steampowered.com.

BF2143 Hinted?

BF3Blog has a screenshot from the Wake Island map in the new Return to Karkand DLC for Battlefield 3, suggesting it's a hint that DICE is gearing up to create Battlefield 2143. This is based on the appearance of the number 2143 on a wall, and they note that Battlefield 2142 was tipped with similar Easter eggs in the Battlefield 2: Euro Forces and Armored Fury map packs. Thanks Computer and Video Games.

On SWTOR Queues

The Star Wars: The Old Republic Website outlines BioWare's concern over reports of long player queues to access Star Wars: The Old Republic, their MMORPG in the midst of its early access period. Here's word from Live Services Executive Producer Jeff Hickman:

We know there have been questions about the queues on the servers, so we wanted to take a moment to give you some insight.

In order to ensure that the service would be smooth and stable, we staged how we brought people into the Early Game Access program, adding people in waves. As you know, there are a lot of folks who want to play the game right now and we want to make sure they have lots of people to play with. Balancing this with figuring out when to bring new servers online to help alleviate the size of the queues is part art and part science. On one hand, you do not want people to wait too long – on the other hand, you want to make sure that people have a dynamic, engaging community to play with for long after launch. Either way, we have one clear objective – to make sure folks have fun.

While we can’t promise that there won’t ever be queues, we can promise you that we are taking this matter seriously and constantly reviewing them to make sure that they are manageable and reasonable.

U.K. Sales Charts

GfK Chart-Track once again offers their list of the top 20 bestselling full-price PC Entertainment titles in the U.K., this time for the week ending December 17, 2011. This week Football Manager 2012 retains the top spot on a ;list where the only change in the top 10 is the eight and nine spots swapping positions. The new all-platforms chart for the same period is almost as stable, with 19 of the top 20 returning from last week.

THQ Wins Ubisoft "Poaching" Appeal

A Quebec Court of Appeal rules that THQ is permitted to hire former Ubisoft employees with "non-compete clauses in their contracts, reports Develop. This overturns a legal decision from March that prohibited THQ from hiring staff with such language in their agreements. The court ruling says the publisher is "not bound by any non-competition restrictions and was therefore free to solicit any Ubisoft employee," as long as this "did not amount to unfair competition."

Out of the Blue

I'd be happier if one of them didn't victimize the Giants, but all the upsets in the NFL yesterday were an awesome example of why I enjoy tackle football so much. The undefeated Packers getting their first loss on the same day the winless Colts tallied their first victory? The only thing that could have been cooler than that is if that happened because the two were playing each other.
