BioWare Developing C&C Generals 2 for 2013

The Command & Conquer Blog has the announcement of Command & Conquer Generals 2, a sequel to this spin-off of the C&C series of real-time strategy games. A website for the game is already online, indicating BioWare is developing the game, and offering a trailer and screenshots to show off the game's Frostbite 2 engine graphics while confirming this is the announcement teased a couple of weeks ago. The trailer concludes saying the game is due in 2013, and here's a bit on what to expect:
In the near future, world leaders are mere seconds from signing a global treaty and bringing an end to war as we know it when a devastating terrorist attack rips through the peace conference, killing all in attendance. In a world left with no politicians, diplomats, or activists, only the Generals remain. It’s up to you to assume their roles, command of their forces, and put an end to global terrorism once and for all.

Epic's Fortnite Announced

Epic made their promised reveal of their new IP at the VGAs, taking the covers off Fortnite, a Minecraft-style building and survival game. "We’ve had amazing success with games like Gears of War and Infinity Blade this year, but we decided it was time to switch things up a little bit and do something different and fun," said Epic's Cliff Bleszinski. "Imagine a world where you explore, you scavenge, you build and ultimately you survive." There are early details and a trailer from the game on VG247. No publisher is yet attached to the project, and target platforms were not announced, and while Epic has been on a console bender for the past few years, they've made PC games in the past, so a Windows edition remains possible. Forbes has an article about the news that includes a video of CliffyB where he declares himself a peer to Ice-T and explains more about the project, of which he says: "I can tell you that traditionally we make shooters, and shooting is in there, but it's really not what the game's all about. It's really a game that's more about survival than anything else."

Skyrim is Spike's 2011 GotY

Spike TV outlines the winners of their Video Game Awards, which were handed out last night. Their Game of the Year winner is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which prevailed over a field that included Batman: Arkham City, The Legend of Zelda, Skyward Sword, Portal 2, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.

Arkham World?

Edge Magazine notes that Rocksteady's acceptance video for its Spike VGA award for Best Character shows the Joker holding a "Batman: Arkham World Script." It's hard to say if this is a hint about the direction of their stealth/action series, or just some sort of gag. After all, would the Joker kid about something like that?

On Skyrim DLC

Joystiq follows the VGA GotY win for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by asking Bethesda's Todd Howard about plans for DLC and other post-release support. He explains, without offering too much detail:
Howard couldn't yet share plans for DLC, but he says it will be focused on "ways to make the game better, not just have more, because the game is so big. So we're going through ideas right now, and processing everything people are doing in the game, and trying to think of ways that we can improve it." There will be multiple releases (as with Bethesda's past games), but Howard says they "don't have a timetable. They won't be quick, and they'll have a lot of meat on them."

Diablo III Opening Cinematic

The Diablo III Website now offers the opening cinematic, from Diablo III, which debuted as promised at Spike's VGAs. Here's word on the opening for Blizzard's action/RPG sequel: "When Diablo III is released and you finally embark on your next great adventure, you’ll be subjected to a cinematic experience that’ll set the stage for your impending journey through Sanctuary and your fight against the evils of the Burning Hells." BioShock Infinite Trailer

G4tv offers the VGA 2011 trailer for BioShock Infinite, Irrational's upcoming installment in their first-person shooter series. Here's how this is described: "The newest trailer for Irrational Games’ continually stunning shooter BioShock Infinite has arrived, and boy, is it a doozy. While it doesn’t reveal anything 'are you serious?!?'-levels of surprising, it more than makes up for it in raw, hauntingly beautiful emotion and perfectly articulated moments of pain, lose, and chaos. Still no release date, but from the looks of it, this one will be more than worth the wait. In the mean time I'll be here, watching this trailer, crying."

Rainbow 6 Patriots Trailer

There's an "official debut trailer" from the VGAs for Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots on G4tv.com, suggesting the trailer released last month was somehow less than official. The brief cinematic clip is from the point of view of the "patriots" who will serve as the game's antagonists, showing one of their victims meeting a very similar fate to their target in the previous trailer.

Hitman Absolution Trailer

A new cinematic trailer from Hitman Absolution was unveiled at the VGAs, and G4tv now hosts the clip for your online viewing pleasure. The clip from the next installment in IO Interactive's stealth/action series features breaking glass, a weeping nun, and Agent 47 taking out some victims via garrote and dual silence pistols, as usual, getting the last laugh (not that he ever laughs).

Unofficial Anno 1404/DoD: Venice Patch

The Steam Users' Forums offer downloads and details on a new user-created patch for Anno 1404/Dawn of Discovery: Venice. Word is: "I'm the current Admin of the Anno 1404 English Wiki, and after doing some extensive testing, I've found a method to modify the fully patched game and not break achievements." The patch is also mirrored on Gamer's Hell.

Doom The Way id Did

The ZDoom Forums offer the release of Doom The Way id Did, explained like so: "For those who haven't heard of it, Doom The Way id Did (or DTWiD for short) is a 3-episode tribute to our beloved DOOM.WAD, designed not as a homage-spree but as an answer to the question "What would it look like if id had decided to create a 10th map for each episode?" The end result is a full set of maps that's meant to look, feel, and play like they came from the hands of Romero, Petersen, and Hall, and we hope that they send a chill of nostalgia down your spine." Thanks Ant.

Out of the Blue

Due to scheduling issues, we had our annual family holiday gathering yesterday, a full two weeks in advance of Christmas Eve. We had a lovely time, and got to spend some time with our nieces and nephews, which was great. It was also great how this forced us to complete our shopping early (not that we ever leave it to the last minute), but it is a little weird having this all out of the way now. We will probably spend the actual holiday with friends for a low-key sort of thing, but there's a certain pressure of the occasion that's now relieved. It makes it feel like the holidays will be, well, holidays!
