Notch: Mojang Offered "To Give Up the Trademark" for Scrolls

The Word of Notch offers a "short response" to some criticism in an editorial on Kotaku based on the recent release of legal documents related to the court battle over the Scrolls trademark. He explains that Mojang actually offered to give up the trademark, but Bethesda seems determined to go to court nonetheless:

I just saw this:

http://kotaku.com/5846111/mojang-v-bethesda-or-i-hate-it-when-mommy-and-daddy-fight

I feel the need to clarify a couple of things:

We realized we should apply for the trademark “Minecraft” to protect our brand. When doing so, we also sent in an application for “Scrolls”. When Bethesda contacted us, we offered both to change the name to “Scrolls: <some subtitle>” and to give up the trademark.

They refused on both counts.

Whatever reason they have for suing us, it’s not a fear of us having a trademark on the word “Scrolls”, as we’ve offered to give that up.

BioWare on Autonomy

An interview on Eurogamer talks with BioWare co-founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, who respond to questions about their level of autonomy since being acquired by Electronic Arts, saying they have "huge autonomy" and that it "is not actually remotely true" that EA is running the show. "We're not being forced to do anything or told to do anything. We make the decisions. We take input," Zeschuk tells them. "It's just funny when people say that, because it's not actually remotely true." Here's a bit more:

"At the end of the day, we're responsible for the quality of the content and games we release, and we're committed to try and always take feedback really seriously from our fans and be humble about how we take it - use it to make the next games better," Ray Muzyka added.

"You're only as good as your next game, and that's the way we've always felt. That's still very much a philosophy at BioWare; quality in our products and delivering each game and exceeding expectations and always trying to delight and surprise our consumers. That's still what we try and do."

Activision Independent Games Competition

Activision announces they are now accepting submissions for their second annual independent games competition, "an award program designed to foster innovation" which is open to "all independent developers with headquarters in the United States." This runs between now and the end of this year, offering $250,000 USD in prizes to the top two entries, with the grand prize winner to walk away with $175,000, while also retaining ownership of their project. "This competition underscores Activision’s commitment to fostering creativity in the independent development community," Dave Stohl, Executive Vice President of Studios, Activision, said. "Many of us began our careers as indies, so we are very proud to offer this kind of support and encouragement to a couple of the industry’s young visionaries." Official rules are to be posted on the website of the competition, though contrary to the announcement, this is not actually live yet.

Out of the Blue

Okay, the awesome news of the day yesterday was the widely reported story that new Arrested Development episodes are coming in addition to the long-promised movie based on the cult-classic sitcom. Then of course there are the cooler heads who always seek to prevail, pointing out the vague aspects of confirming a movie without a finished script or development deal and a television series without a network may make celebrating this premature. Okay, fine, if you're one of those people who are all hung up on facts. Anyway, here's hoping it all works out. In the meantime, here's a list of Ten Things You Didn’t Know About “Arrested Development”, carefully counted down from number nine(?) to number one.
