Deus Ex: Human Revolution Patched

Steam News announces the release of a new automatic patch for Deus Ex: Human Revolution to address an issue that could cause the just-released action/RPG prequel to crash, while also increasing the number of saved game slots:

An issue was found that caused some users to be unable to start the game on specific machines. Specifically, the presence of older ATI/AMD drivers, also on machines with NVidia hardware, would cause the game to crash on startup. This patch is a hot-fix for that particular issue. On top of this, it also increases the number of save-slots from 20, like on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, to 99.

Square-Enix, Eidos Montreal and Nixxes are committed to supporting this title and will continue to monitor for any further issues and provide additional patches in the future if required.

We hope this will help you enjoy Deus Ex: Human Revolution!

Warhammer 40:000 Space Marine Demo

The Space Marine Website announces the Windows and Xbox 360 demos for Warhammer 40:000 Space Marine are both now available, and that the PlayStation 3 sample of Relic's sci-fi action/RPG will be released on Wednesday (thanks Gamer's Hell). The Windows demo is available through Steam, and here's word on what it offers:

The Space Marine demo features two very different areas of the game. The first pits the player against an Ork horde outside the gates of a munitions factory. Armed with six devastating weapons, including the iconic bolter and lethal chainsword, the player will get to experience Space Marine's seamless mix of melee and ranged combat first hand as they take on the rampaging invaders. The second area gives players a taste of the exhilarating Jump Pack sequences where the game’s hero—Captain Titus—takes to the skies to rain death from above.

Dungeon Defenders in October

Trendy Entertainment announces an October 19 Windows and Xbox LIVE Arcade release date for Dungeon Defenders, their cross-platform online tower defense RPG, saying the release date for the PlayStation Network edition will be revealed "soon." They offer a little more on the ability of players on the Windows, PlayStation 3, iOS, and Android editions to join the same game: "Dungeon Defender’s game experience has been modified to best suit each individual platform, making the game just as fun to play on a portable touch screen as it is with a mouse and keyboard or Dual Shock 3 controller." The Xbox 360 edition is not included in this equation presumably because Microsoft is the "platform holder" Gabe Newell recently mentioned as not embracing this concept. Trendy says GameSpy Technology will joint them in discussing this cross-platform support on Wednesday at PAX Dev preceding this weekend's PAX Prime. Here's a new trailer from the game showing off the its Squire unit. Continue here to read the full story.

Serious Sam 3: BFE Delayed Until October; Steam Promotions

Croteam and Devolver Digital announce October 18 as the release date for Serious Sam 3: BFE, the first-person shooter sequel previously planned for release this summer. When we asked for a reason for the delay, we were told Devolver CFO Fork Parker pushed back the release "to work around his vacation to the brothels of Europe" (as our contact said: "I have a weird job").

The announcement also has word that pre-purchases of the game are now underway on Steam, though they aren't actually live yet, and the Steam page still says the game is due this summer. When these pre-purchases do begin, they will carry a 10% discount off the game's $39.99 USD price tag, and those who already own a Serious Sam title on Steam will be entitled to an additional 10% off. Further to that: "To celebrate Serious Sam 3: BFE preorders starting, all Serious Sam HD titles and bundles will be available on Steam at a 66% off discount and 85% off if you preorder Serious Sam 3: BFE today, August 23." There's one more perk for the advance commitment, a "timed exclusive" Fork Parker multiplayer avatar for use in Serious Sam 3: BFE. They also offer a quote from Fork: "I pledge to take one dollar from each Serious Sam 3: BFE preorder and put it towards my wife’s outrageously expensive tit job," said Fork Parker, Devolver Digital CFO. "So get to preordering nerds, I want these babies to block out the sun when I’m done with them." Here's a new "Serious Chaos" trailer to celebrate the news. Continue here to read the full story.

Owners of the game will be able to play not only on their home gaming PC, but also on nearly any PC or Mac® computer—as well as TVs with the OnLive Game System and, in the future, on iPad® and Android tablets—by simply signing in to the OnLive Game Service." Another I Am Alive Clue

The recent entry in the Australian Classification Database for I Am Alive was updated yesterday, following the recent (now pulled) gameplay trailer with another indication that this survival game is living up to its title, and is still alive. The new listing changes the game's consumer advice from "Strong violence" to "Strong themes and violence." Thanks Eurogamer.

LucasArts Open-World RPG Plans

Clint Hocking tweets about job openings at LucasArts like this one for a Gameplay Engineer, as they gather staff for a mysterious "Open-World RPG." There's no indication of whether or not this is a Star Wars game, nor are their many other hints about what this will entail, though there is this clue about platforms: "Console development experience required (At least one title)." Thanks Eurogamer.

Warspire Announced

Silverlode Interactive announces Warspire, a "collectible" real-time strategy game follow up to SAGA using units and heroes from all six factions in their MMORTS game. The game is in the works for Windows, Linux, and OS X, and the plan is to launch invitation-only alpha testing this autumn. The game will be free-to-play, featuring microtransactions that will offer gameplay advantages. Here's word:

“With SAGA, the focus is on nation-building and completing quests,” stated Silverlode president Jason Faller. “We wanted the follow-up to be centered on players competing against one another in an intense strategy setting while maintaining the persistency that made SAGA such an innovative game.”

In keeping with this persistency theme, players can select heroes for their army which can level up, gaining greater power and new abilities. This progress is maintained from match to match. In addition, players can purchase new troops with in-game or real life currency to bolster the forces of their armies. This dynamic will allow Warspire to be released free to play.

IGN has word from Telltale Games to expect the release of Jurassic Park: The Game on November 15 for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, adding that an iPad version of the episodic dinosaur resurrection game is still in the works, but in keeping with chaos theory, this doesn't yet carry a release date. Thanks Joystiq.

Green Man Gaming Expanding

MCV has word that game e-tailer Green Man Gaming is expanding its European/Asian operations:

The company has partnered with retail specialists Next Level Games for the Czech Republic, teamed up with CD Media for a Greek store and is working with Vivida for a Turkey download site.

All three digital stores are due in September and will be localised, with their own customer support and offers.

A fourth store is for the German market and will be launched on the IGN German site later in the year. This deal follows an agreement between Green Man Gaming and IGN’s licensee Media XP, and will see the store promoted not just on IGN, but in games and technology magazines.

All four territories have a thriving PC games market, particularly in Greece where 35 per cent of all game sales are on PC.

Overwolf Beta

A beta version of Overwolf is now available, a Chrome-based program offering access to allow access to email, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and more from within Windows-based games.

Op Ed

GamePro - Time for Bethesda to Drop the 'Scrolls' Lawsuit.
It may well end up going to court--Bethesda seems intent on aggressively defending their trademark--but the question is, "Why?" What can Bethesda possibly gain from what Notch has masterfully made into a media circus?

The answer is "nothing." Even if Bethesda has grounds--and at least one legal expert says they do--there's no undoing the damage that would come from this public relations debacle. As it is, Bethesda is mainly coming off as a bully of a publisher that's picking on the little guy. And the more Notch writes, the worse they look.

Bethesda might win the battle, but they'll ultimately lose the war. Obviously, this will in no way impact sales on Skyrim. Business will go on as usual. But a very public fight with an indie developer--which this surely would become--would only set Bethesda on the slippery slope to being perceived as a black hat in the game industry. And that's a label that even publishing giant Activision has gotten rather sensitive about lately.

Out of the Blue

Yesterday I picked up the pups from camp to accomplish the last errand to conclude our trip to Atlanta. As has happened before, Hudson the wonder dog was happy to see both of us, but while the Gunnar-man greeted me enthusiastically, he gave MrsBlue the cold shoulder, because he considers her his person, and obviously blamed her for leaving him behind. This happened the last time we went away, and it took him over a day to forgive her. This time, however, the silent treatment lasted until we stopped off on the way home and she ran into a store for a few minutes. He watched intently as she left, and when she returned he became overjoyed and kissed her enthusiastically. It seems apparent this brief second absence shocked him into gratitude for being reunited, and he immediately stopped overplaying his hand, err, paw.
