GameInformer reports on plans to limit the number of copies of Star Wars: The Old Republic sold upon the game's launch: "According to the representative speaking at this demo, EA and BioWare made the choice to limit the number of copies of the game available for purchase in order to assure a smooth launch. It's fairly common for popular MMOs to suffer from long wait times and server crashes for the first few months after launch because of the stress put on servers. EA says it would rather make sure the experience is quality for the first gamers to get in than to sell as many copies as possible but ensure a subpar experience for everyone." How many copies they will sell is not specified. On a related note, the Star Wars: The Old Republic Website has a new trailer from BioWare's upcoming MMORPG introducing the sport of Huttball. Here's word on this in-game sport: "A new event has captured the hearts and minds of the citizens on the Smuggler’s Moon of Nar Shaddaa. Known as “Huttball,” two teams clash for the amusement of the masses and to win favor with the famed Giradda the Hutt in this new video that highlights just one of the Player-vs-Player (PvP) Warzones in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™!"
A new unofficial patch is now available for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, continuing the community support for this action/RPG since the demise of Troika, its developer. The new patch is referred to as a beta version 7.7, and as always, it can be found on what's supposed to be its exclusive home at The Patches Scrolls, where they have patch notes describing what it does, which are reproduced below. A new video interview on PC Games.de talks with Valve honcho Gabe Newell about DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike Global Offensive during Gamescom. At around the 15:00 mark they ask if Counter-Strike Global Offensive will support cross-platform gaming like Portal 2 does between PC and PS3, and he explains that this is their goal: That's certainly our goal. We never want to create these 'islands of players.' You have to be sensitive to control differences, and make sure you're accommodating that, but, you know, our view is players should be able to play as part of a community on whatever device they can. You know, sometimes there are contractual, or other issues that make that hard, where somebody, a platform holder doesn't want you to do that for whatever reason, but that's always out preference. is to let customers play and be part of the larger community.

Battleblog #7 has details on the themed co-op campaign DICE is working on for Battlefield 3, their upcoming military shooter sequel. Here's a bit on how this works: To survive through the co-op missions, you’ll need to stay close to your buddy. If he goes down, lend a helping hand with the new co-op “Man down!” mechanic, that lets you revive him in the heat of battle. While being down, you can still use your secondary weapon to defend yourself, while slowly crawling to a safer spot where your friend can help you without getting shot. If both of you go down, it’s game over.
You fight together. You die together. And you score together. After having cleared a co-op mission with your friend, your total combined score will be displayed via Battlelog, our suite of free social features that connect all Battlefield 3 players. Missions are designed to be shorter than single player missions, so you can easily do multiple rounds in an evening to try and beat your friends’ high score. The best score of your Friend will be displayed for each mission, so you know what to aim for.
A new interview on GameSpy talks with Anton Sitnikau, producer of World of Warplanes, Wargaming.net's upcoming free-to-play MMO aerial combat game. Along the way he talks about the lessons they've learned from the launch of World of Tanks, talks about aircraft and timeframes covered, and more. He also explains the game's flight model: "World of Warplanes will represent a mixture of arcade flyer and simulator. We'll deliberately make the controls simple, as we want our players to focus on the battle itself but not on operating the aircraft. However, behind the simplified controls and unobtrusive interface are rather deep game mechanics, that will determine the flight model and damage system."

I'm getting set to be on the road for part of the weekend, so I'll ask in advance for your patience for whatever disruption this causes. After heading out this afternoon it's most likely that this evening will only afford me the chance to cover any major gaming tidbits that pop up, rather than a more typical full update with the techie bits and all. I should be able to catch up on that stuff tomorrow, and Sunday's update may be on the late side, but that's not unprecedented, so I'm hoping the impact of all this will be fairly minimal.
