Eurogamer has a confirmation that those snazzy Batman skins that are retailer-specific bonuses in Batman Arkham City will also be released as DLC for the stealth/action sequel at some point. According to Rocksteady's marketing manager Dax Ginn. "Absolutely down the track [the skins] will be available more broadly."

Quoteworthy - Notch on Being Courted by EA

"I play their games, and they make great games, but we are too far from each other. They can make their games, and I’ll buy them. We’ll make ours, and they can buy them. Not the property – that’s ours. But they can play it like everyone else." -- Minecraft creator Notch on EA's interest in acquiring Mojang.

Tech 4 Source Release This Year

During his QuakeCon keynote, John Carmack announced plans to release the source code to id's Tech 4 engine from DOOM 3 before the end of this year. A couple of years ago an issue related to a patent conflict with Creative Labs was identified as something that could impede such a GPL release, but at the time id's Technical Director indicated if it came to that, he could fashion a workaround. Here's what Phoronix wrote about the news: "The source-code to Doom 3 is definitely to be released this year, Zenimax (the company that acquired id Software) has been supportive of the process, and he has challenged other game developers to release old source-code too. Carmack says that releasing the code really helps the development community." Thanks Ant via Slashdot.

Peter Moore New EA COO

Electronic Arts announces that Peter Moore will take over as COO of EA beginning next week:

Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. has named Peter Moore, the head of its EA Sports label, as chief operating officer effective Aug. 8.

Moore replaces John Schappert, who left the company to join "FarmVille" maker Zynga Inc., the fast-rising online game company that's starting to encroach on traditional video game publishers. Aiming to stay competitive in the age of Facebook and mobile games, EA recently bought PopCap Games, the company behind "Bejeweled" and "Plants vs. Zombies."

EA said in a regulatory filing Thursday that it is also reshuffling the label structure it established in 2007. Frank Gibeau, President of EA Games, will become president of the EA Labels, which will comprise EA Games, EA Sports, Bioware and EA Play.

Wargame - European Escalation Website

A new Wargame - European Escalation Website is online as a home to Eugen Systems' military real-time strategy game that's expected for release by the end of this year. The site includes information on the game along with four new screenshots. We can probably expect more details on this project soon, as it will be shown off in a couple of weeks at Gamescom 2011.

The Stanley Parable

Mod DB now offers the debut release of The Stanley Parable, described as a mod for Half-Life 2, though HL2 is not actually required since it can be played using the free Source SDK (thanks BlueWolf72). Here's a trailer and here's the intentionally minimal description:

The Stanley Parable is an experimental narrative-driven first person game. It is an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality, all examined through the lens of what it means to play a video game.

You will make a choice that does not matter.

You will follow a story that has no end.

You will play a game you cannot win.

...it's actually best if you don't know anything about it before you play it :D!

New OpenDUNE

The OpenDUNE Website now offers a recently released new version 0.5 of this community created game based on Dune II, the influential real-time strategy game. Here's word: "This is the fourth release in a set of releases which concentrate in understanding and rewriting all functions of the original code, making enhancements on the way, without really changing the game in any way. A complete list of enhancements can be found here. This release finally has all functions converted to ‘real C’, and we are now cleaning up stuff. A lot of functions have been named, variables have been identified, and the stability has increased a lot. Many small (and odd) bugs have been fixed and addressed." Thanks Ant via CNC-Comm.
