Modern Warfare 3 November Date Confirmed

Activision announces November 8, 2011 as the official worldwide release date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the upcoming military shooter sequel. This confirms a previous rumor that was recently bolstered by the image of a MW3 poster that carried that date, as well as the listing for the game on Amazon.com. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is by far the most epic Call of Duty experience yet. The teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have worked tirelessly to create for the Call of Duty player a scale that is unimaginable with a level of polish and creativity that will push the genre forward," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. "The passion and energy of our developers is reflected in everything about the title. From the innovative gameplay, to the cinematic intensity, to the most advanced multiplayer ever, Modern Warfare 3 will raise the bar for this already incredible franchise."

Ghost Recon Online Announced

Ubisoft announces Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online, an upcoming free-to-play third-person multiplayer shooter based on the tactical shooter series. The game is in development at Ubisoft Singapore, and while it doesn't carry a release date at this time, closed beta testing is set to begin this summer, and those interested in the beta can sign up on the game's official website. Word is: "With Ghost Recon Online, Ubisoft is delivering the most social, connected and customizable Ghost Recon experience yet. The game offers players the ability to choose between three different classes of Ghost, customize their weapons, deploy cutting-edge military technology, and share intel with their team. Ghost Recon Online also features a rich lobby platform for hosting social and persistent progression features. Ubisoft also will back the game with a full set of services, including regular events and game content updates, customized content based on community feedback, and live support." Here's a batch of screenshots and here's the game's debut trailer, which is also embedded below. Continue here to read the full story.

Gold - Duke Nukem Forever

2K Games and Gearbox Software announce that development is complete on Duke Nukem Forever, saying it is in duplication for release, something that seemed likely never to happen at various times since the announcement of the first-person shooter sequel in the last millennium. The game is due in internationally on June 10 except for North America, where it will be released on June 14. A playable demo is due a week from Friday, to be first released for those who have preordered the game or who own the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition. Here's a bit from the announcement on the game's legendary, if not unprecedented, nearly 15-year development cycle:
In 2009, after many believed that Duke Nukem Forever would never be completed, a small team of intrepid developers, known as Triptych Studios, resurrected the dream. Through their inspiring and steadfast commitment to the game and their exemplary talent and skill, they finally assembled the pieces to create an incredible, epic and cohesive gameplay experience. Under the production of Gearbox Software, Triptych Studios, Piranha Games and many other contributors joined together in a heroic effort to complete the long awaited game as a polished, full-featured triple-A title.

World of Tanks Milestones

Wargaming.net announces that more than two million players have registered for World of Tanks on the Russian server for the MMO armored combat game. They also say the North American and European server is nearing the one million player milestone since the game's official launch earlier this month. "At the very beginning of development for World of Tanks, we were assuming that the maximum number would be around 600,000 players worldwide. Now, we have 2 million registrations in Russia alone, not to mention the Western audience and its immense growth," said Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi. "With the tremendous number we’ve reached in Russia as well as the dynamics of community growth in Europe and North America, we are looking forward to the many more milestones to come."

Op Ed

Charlie Brooker - Hollywood shuns intelligent entertainment. The games industry doesn't. Guess who's winning? Thanks Mike Martinez.
And both these games – both of these entirely different, utterly unique creations – are a huge commercial success. In cinematic terms, it's the equivalent of films of the intelligence and quality of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Maltese Falcon not just being released to great fanfare in 2011, but actually going on to smash box office records. Somehow Portal 2 and LA Noire manage to be more cinematic than a great deal of contemporary cinema – while being something entirely different, something with the phrase "I LOVE VIDEO GAMES" embedded in their DNA like a cheerful slogan through a stick of rock. These are not replacements for films, but something thrillingly different. Gaming's ongoing push into the mainstream consciousness has entered a bold new phase – by appealing to the players' intelligence and imagination, it's starting to make Hollywood look embarrassing.

We had some technical difficulties here in the Blue Tower this morning. It turns out there was a problem with the dreaded flaky cable, which is annoying, but at least fixing it was easy enough, once the problem was properly diagnosed.
