The Secret World Trailer

Break out your tinfoil hat, as a new "Everything is True" trailer from The Secret World highlights the truthiness of the various conspiracy theories in Funcom's upcoming MMORPG. Word is: "Remember all those legends and myths you heard when you were a kid, or the conspiracies that you’ve been fed in countless blog entries and forum posts? They’re all true. It’s all explained in Funcom’s latest video for the upcoming modern-day massively multiplayer online role-playing game, ‘The Secret World’." Here's the embedded version. Continue here to read the full story.

Duke Nukem Forever Trailers

A new Duke Nukem Forever Babes Trailer offers an unabashedly sexist look at the curvaceous ladies in Duke Nukem Forever. They are in various stages of undress, though the topless (t.o.p.l.e.s.s.) stripper's boobs are pixilated into a barely SFW state. Also, Duke Nukem Forever History of a Legend, Part 1 (linked the other night) features Scott Miller, Randy Pitchford, Allen Blum, Joe Siegler, and various others discussing the origins of Duke and the evolution of the side-scroller into a first-person shooter. Both clips are embedded below. Continue here to read the full story.

Hats Off to TF2

A post to the Team Fortress 2 Blog discusses hats, as a new automatic update adds nine new hats and one new bear to the multiplayer shooter/haberdashery simulation. Word is: "Anyway, hats. They are new and very good for you. There are ten of them. One is bear, not hat. So nine hats and bear. Available through drops, craftings [sic] and store. Is good deal, you should buy. Moneys go to TF community members who make hats and bears. Do not wait. Get in line now for hat or bear. Have money ready because line is going to be long." They also add this question: "These are good words. Job is done. Where is Heavy's hat?" A possibly related post on PC Gamer offers a screenshot they say they received from Valve's Gabe Newell, saying it's titled "berets or scoop," though to the untrained eye it resembles a Jackson Pollock painting.

Mass Effect 3 Details, Movie Plans

There's a concise write-up about the preview on NeoGAF (thanks Eurogamer), offering some spoilerish details, with word on characters that will return, an upgraded RPG system, weapons mods, and alternative endings. They also confirm that, like its predecessors, Mass Effect 3 will offer no multiplayer support. On a related note, IGN has word on plans for an anime movie based on Mass Effect: "Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us," said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer for the Mass Effect series. "Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we will bring this rich universe to life with the utmost quality and the same attention to detail that the Mass Effect games are known for."

World of Tanks Reward Correction

There was an error in yesterday's press release from Wargaming.net about beta testing of World of Tanks, their upcoming MMOTPS. As was mentioned in our forums, the prerequisites for earning the M4A2E4 tank were not accurate. Wargaming.net sends along their apologies and a correction:

There’s one serious mistake in the press-release we distributed yesterday.

M4A2E4 tank will be given to closed beta-testers (registered by 0:00 UTC 27/01/2011) that have 1000+ battles on their profiles. Not like stated in the press-release: All closed beta-testers and those with 1000 and more battles fought.

Quote of the Day

"We got from number 25 to number three, so we think that we can continue and that it is possible to be number one. It’s not certain, but we are taking the steps that we think will get us there," Ubisoft founder and CEO Yves Guillemot tells MCV. "It has to be by creating or finding products that will make the difference and will be recognised as the best products in the industry. We have to create the products that will fuel the growth. I’m not saying we won’t do acquisitions, but the focus is on creating products."

Op Ed

PCWorld - Sex in Games- Is it Time to Grow Up?
Developers and publishers got over their fear of graphic, bloody violence long ago, but sex is still a great taboo. Dragon Age II, for example, features a level of gore that would make Mortal Kombat blush, but heaven forbid you catch a glimpse of a bare nipple during an intimate scene. This is partly down to the overblown reaction of media outlets such as Fox News when news of sex scenes in games hit the mainstream, but it's also evidence of a certain level of prudishness on the part of triple-A developers and publishers in particular.

Bitmob - An honest conversation with BioWare.
I waited until he was finished before I roared in reply, "You recycled a bunch of environments! That is never ever okay! It's not an open world game like Assassin's Creed where the setting is an evolving playground. It's Dragon Age, a game about epic quests, dragon slaying, and deep stories people can get lost in. If you had planned to release it like this, why didn't you call it Dragon Age: Hawke Does Stuff. At least then I could've stomached it."
