The Ubisoft Forums offer release dates for Might & Magic Heroes VI, the upcoming continuation of the Heroes of Might and Magic series of fantasy-themed strategy games. Ubi's UK Forum Manager confirms the game will be released in the U.S. on June 21st, in Europe on June 23rd, and in the U.K. on June 24th. Steam says the game will unlock on May 24th, but presumably this will be changed in light of this new information. Thanks Gamer's Hell.
The Mythos Europe Website reveals an April 28 launch date for the European version of Mythos, the MMORPG that was in the works at Flagship before the developer sank. Word is they will update the closed beta on March 29th, launch open beta testing on April 12th, and provide early access to purchasers of the boxed version on April 26th (thanks Big Download). The Redbana Forums also offer an update on the uncertain state of the game's delayed North American launch: As before, we do not have any dates for the US beta release. There have been further technical delays which have pushed the game back even further than we had anticipated. This is very frustrating to everyone involved and in no way was it planned. Most of the delays revolve around server capacity and network traffic. All of our previous estimates were based on what the development team had estimated. When those deadlines are not met, everything gets pushed back. The technical hurdles are not insurmountable but they have been the major source of all delays.
An Account Security Discussion Thread on the RIFT Forums indicates that an exploit in the authentication system for Trion World's MMORPG has been fixed, after it was recently discovered that it was possible to login to accounts without even knowing the proper username or password. This combines with a newly implemented coin lock feature that required further authentication for attempts to login to accounts from a location significantly different from previous logins to address instances of account hijacking. Thanks Game Genus, where they have further reporting on the circumstances surrounding all this.
Impulse now offers preorders of DLC Pack 1 for Dungeons, a $3.99 USD pack that will add new adventures to the Dungeon Keeper/Evil Genius-style action/strategy game. Word is: "The first DLC pack for the critically acclaimed evildoer game Dungeons delivers new challenges for wannabe dungeon lords. Heart of the download content is the new campaign map Flowerdale, in which players have to deal with with [sic] ever new waves of heroes. The pack also includes ten new maps for the game modes survival, soul survival, sandbox and amusement and twenty new prestige items." Thanks Big Download.
The Fallout wiki has word that they have received a Fallout film treatment from the Brent V. Friedman who wrote this second revision for a now-cancelled movie that was being planned back in 1998 before the release of Fallout 2. They offer the full treatment in Adobe Acrobat format as well as this summary of what it includes. Here's their general abstract: The movie was not a faithful adaptation of the game's plot, and was never intended to be one, although the main story was loosely based on that of the original game. Some of the elements of the Fallout universe that many players can't imagine a Fallout title without, like ghouls, Brotherhood of Steel, deathclaws or power armor, were not included, although it's understandable given that e.g. the BoS is not as essential to the plot of the original game as to the later ones. The only characters from the original game, aside from the Vault Dweller himself (although here we have a party three vault dwellers - aside from the main Hero, there's the Female Officer, Techy and Scholar), are the Overseer, the Master and Dekker - the movie was to focus on Vault 13, the search for the water chip and the super mutant threat, and most other parts of the game did not make the cut. New characters and threads include Max (based on Mad Max), the hero's Intended and his relationship with his father (which may sound familiar to fans of Fallout 3).
Troy Duffy attended SXSW this week where The Boondock Saints director
discussed the possibility of releasing a video game based on the cult crime thriller movie and its sequel. "We're thinking of making a video game out of 'Boondock' and I went and listened to these guys pitch me the game and they had already done some programming," said Duffy. "They had already built part of the game and I got to play it." Though he has not made a final decision on whether to go ahead with the project, he says he already has one actor onboard for the project, which he says would be at least a year off. Update: Fixed the headline. Here's more: "Gamers are so far removed from what I know that I wouldn't even know how the hell to play them," said Duffy. "The demo the developer put together for 'Boondock' seems like real-time…realistic action. You're looking at real characters…you can see sweat on their brows. The technology is out of this world."
When it comes to a video game version of the film franchise, the two things that are most important for Duffy is to maintain the gritty and rough look for the game world's environments and to allow fans be able to play as any of their favorite characters.
"The 'Boondock' fan base wants to have a beer with the MacManus brothers and then pick up a weapon and fight," said Duffy. "With a video game you can increase that kind of intimacy, where they can actually be the brothers and hang out and do some shooting and have some fun. That communal aspect of the game is very important to me."
Tonight is the moon's closest perigee in 18 years, as well as a full moon. Some have expressed fears that this so-called "super moon" is behind the Japanese earthquake and may possibly cause other natural disasters, but scientists have debunked these concerns. I have not, however, seen any indications that this will not cause a plague of super werewolves, so thankfully I have a stockpile of silver bullets.
