Bungie's MMOG Backtracking

The Bungie Weekly Update backtracks from lead network engineer David Aldridge's GDC comment earlier this week saying their next project is a massively multiplayer action game (thanks Big Download). They are now claiming this is a joke, invoking endless Charlie Sheen references in their explanation:

Tired of pretending that he’s not a -blam!-in’ rock star from Mars, David Aldridge inhaled a huge hit of David Aldridge at GDC yesterday. Subsequently, his face melted off and children wept over his exploded body. After the childish tears, gelatinous gibs, and acrid smoke cleared, an industrious journalist noticed the final slide from David’s GDC deck which apparently proclaimed that we were hiring for a "massively…multiplayer action game." Ruh oh.

Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors. Unfortunately, most people can’t figure David out – they can’t process him. And we don’t expect them to. You can’t process David Aldridge with a normal brain. You’d need tiger blood and Adonis DNA.

Steam Guard Beta

Valve's just announced Steam Guard system is now in beta. Word is: "As a Steam account holder, you can now take advantage of this additional level of account security, further prohibiting others from gaining access to your account. As a beta participant, once you've verified your email address with Steam, Steam Guard becomes available for your use and is enabled for your Steam account by default." To demonstrate the security this provides, Gabe Newell gives out his username and password at Cebit (thanks VG247 via Reddit).

Gilbert Would "Love" Maniac Mansion Rerelease

Eurogamer reports Double Fine's Ron Gilbert told GDC attendees he would "love" to see LucasArts rerelease Maniac Mansion, saying "I would love for them to re-release Maniac Mansion the same way they did the Monkey Island games. I think that would be really neat." The original Maniac Mansion was released by LucasFilm Games for Commodore 64 and Apple II back in 1987. "I've often thought it would be fun to go through the game and fix a lot of the problems I mentioned and get the puzzle structure more like we did in Monkey Island," he said. "But then other times I think 'do I really want to do that?' Maybe the game really needs to have those flaws. Isn't that a little bit like George Lucas going back and fixing all those problems with Star Wars? Maybe the game really needs to be what it is back then."

Technology of Dragon Age II

The Technology of Dragon Age II – Part 2 on the BioWare Blog offers an illustrated look at advancements in the role-playing sequel. Here's an overview of their goals:

One of the major goals of the team was to make the game look great on all platforms. Having accomplished that, we started researching what additional features we can offer to our users that have invested on higher end PC hardware. The latest PC GPUs that have been recently released on the market are very powerful. DirectX 11 technology is a great way for us to target this advanced GPU hardware, as DirectX 11 is fully backwards compatible with DirectX 10. So if you have a video card that supports DirectX 10, DirectX 10.1 or DirectX 11, and Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7, you’ll be able to benefit from additional technology features as described in this post.

Alice: Madness Returns Gameplay Trailers

The Alice: Madness Returns GDC demonstration is available for viewing on IGN, offering a first look at gameplay from Spicy Horse's upcoming Alice sequel. The clip shows some platforming, combat, and Alice getting small, which would please Steve Martin, though Jefferson Airplane would be disappointed to note that at no time does she seem to be ten feet tall. Thanks VG247.

He talks about the game's setting and storyline, characters, role-playing elements, its non-traditional skills and abilities, factions, naval combat, land battles, and more. The clip features a brief look at gameplay as well as a bunch of concept art.
