Free-to-Play Ryzom

The Ryzom Forums announce another change in direction for Ryzom, the futuristic MMORPG, saying a version 1.11.0 patch that will go live next Wednesday (March 9th) will add a free-to-play element to the game. Word is: "free trial accounts are now limited to a maximum level of 125 in all different skills, enabling everyone to sample all aspects of Ryzom and to discover what makes this MMO unique. When you reach level 125 in a skill you can still continue playing, but you will gain no more experience points. The second limitation is storage: you cannot own any mektoub packers, use the inventory of your apartment or take any items from a guild hall." They add: "Despite the freedom of this new system, we would like to remind you that Ryzom can only live on through your paid subscriptions." The new patch also adds a new boss enemy and a new role-playing sequence.

Gold - Homefront

THQ announces that Homefront is gold, and Kaos Studios' now-complete first-person shooter is on track to meet its promised release dates of March 15 in North America and Europe, March 17 in Australia, and March 18 in the U.K. Word is: "In advance of release, THQ is preparing hundreds of dedicated servers in multiple locations across the globe to support Homefront's epic multiplayer mode." Here's a bit on the game:
2027. A once proud America has fallen, her infrastructure shattered and military in disarray. Crippled by a devastating EMP strike the USA is powerless to resist the ever expanding occupation of a savage, nuclear armed Greater Korean Republic.

Abandoned by her former allies, the United States is a bleak landscape of walled towns and abandoned suburbs. This is a police state where high school stadiums have become detention centers, and shopping malls shelter armored attack vehicles. A once-free people are now prisoners... or collaborators... or revolutionaries.

Mass Effect Speculation

In addition to the normal thrills and chills associated with such clips, a Dragon Age II "unboxing" video shows that the game includes a Mass Effect-styled leaflet that says "The Arrival Has Begun." This has lead to speculation that this is a tease for the rumored Arrival DLC for Mass Effect 2, or possibly Mass Effect 3. Thanks Strategy Informer.

Guild Wars II Trailers

A series of four pretty steady ShakyCam Guild Wars II clips on GameTrailers show character creation and the starting areas in ArenaNet's upcoming MMORPG sequel. They are Part I, Part II, Part III, and Part IV. Part III features the just-revealed thief class, showing dual-wielding, how the thief uses initiative rather than cool down timers, stealth (invisibility), shadow step (teleportation), and weapon stealing. Thanks Cutter.

IL-2 Sturmovik Patch

Arma 2: Reinforcements Next Month

The Arma II Website announces plans for Arma 2: Reinforcements, an upcoming standalone DLC release for Bohemia Interactive's military first-person shooter (is it Arma, ARMA, ArmA, 2, II? They don't seem to know themselves). The disc will offer both the British Armed Forces and Private Military Company packs which are already available via digital delivery. This is due "exclusively for PC" on April 1st, though it's not clear if this is due outside of Europe, since they only list its price (29.99) in euros. "We´ve received numerous requests from our customers and the community to deliver both expansions on DVD. We´re always trying to deliver something more and here it is, new campaigns, dozens of units all completely standalone to be played solo or to be combined with our other great military simulators into one ultimate pack," says Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Španěl. "And that’s not forgetting the hundreds of superb community made addons/mods/campaigns which are fully compatible with all versions of our games including Arma 2: Reinforcements."
