A post to the QuakeCon forum
addresses some rumor and speculation by admitting that while QuakeCon will remain a free event, that there are plans to have "premium" registrations for the BYOC area, which may crowd out some free attendees. Word is: "To properly characterize the email that's been buzzing around the forums, we're going to have a premium registration option for the BYOC. At this time it's limited to a portion of the available seats, so it's impossible that the new option will 'crowd out' the free seats. I've got to wait for a press release to be finalized before I can share more details, but I promise that I will as soon as I can and it's going to be pretty cool." Thanks Big Download

The Battlefield Blog
has a status report on the Medal of Honor
beta now that testing of the upcoming military first-person shooter reboot is underway. They outline some known issues with the PS3 beta that will be patched within the next several days, and they have this to say about the PC beta: "We have a PC patch in the works as well, and will have more details on that in the near future. In the meantime, please know that we are aware of the existing crash issues and have heard your concerns with the front-end - and while a more PC friendly menu, toned down HUD, weapon recoil tweaks, and balancing fixes are all on the way, some of our planned responses to your feedback may not be implemented until the final release version of the game."
A tweet by Barrie "Bazajaytee" Tingle
from yesterday has word that the recently delayed
patch for the PC edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2
has hit a snag, saying: "BFBC2 Patch came back with one failure from STEAM testing. We are working to try and get a new version to them this evening. Will update more." That promised follow up came a bit later
, where he says: "There will be no PC patch this week, Kalms is on the case. This pushes our release to Monday next week as long as all goes well with QA/Steam." Most recently
he adds: "back in QA at the minute and looking at a possible Monday release. Fingers crossed."
by Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling opens a direct line of communication with Infinity Ward: "You can now call or text (402) 500-0119 to give feedback, ask questions, or just leave a rant thanks to @GoogleVoice! Accessibility ftw!"
There's more from Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick in a semi-recent interview on WSJ.com
(you can view the full article through Google Search
) answering questions about the state of the game business. An interesting tidbit is where he explains their business has fewer fluctuations than in the past because of how much of their profits come from "non-console-based video games." Word is: "Today, probably 70% of our operating profit comes from non-console-based video games. So, while you might see a month-to-month change or volatility against expectations, that doesn't really get us too concerned." Gamasutra
contacted Activision to clarify whether this 70% figure includes things like console DLC, and were told it does not, so that seems to represent PC and iPhone game sales, and more significantly, World of Warcraft
subscriptions. Thanks joao via Computer and Video Games
