New Left 4 Dead 2 Mutation

The Left 4 Dead Blog announces "Headshot" as this week's new mutation for Valve's teamplay shooter. They explain that this quite simply requires headshots: "Shoot them in the arm, shoot them in the leg, shoot them in the chest - it just doesn't matter! The only way these zombies are going down is with a head shot. Other hits will stumble them back, but only a head shot or decapitation will kill them." They also outline some versus updates in the new Left 4 Dead 2 Patch that's automatically available, saying these changes will come to the Xbox 360 edition "in the near future." Here are the patch notes. Continue here to read the full story.

Team Fortress 2 Tourney

The Team Fortress 2 Blog has a neat movie-style poster for The Battle of Both Worlds, a Team Fortress 2 tourney which will feature "some pros in action." Matches begin next week, signups are still being accepted, and word is: "So you've been taking advantage of Training Mode and Offline Practice Mode all week, and you think you're pretty hot stuff. What better way to find out how wrong you are than to watch some pros in action at the Steam Powered User Forums' ""Battle of Both Worlds"" match this week? Also known as the "Pros vs Pubbers" event, the match features a team of competitive players versus a team of highly skilled public-server players. It's a perfect opportunity to see a whole bunch of truly great TF2 players have some truly great fun. Check it out."

OnLive On, Live

OnLive has begun activating accounts for this cloud-based media service (though not for "founding members" as was originally stated here, apologies for the confusion), as promised. The footnote on their new user notification gives a little further understanding of how this will work, clarifying the included free game is for the free first year of one's subscription, and that Mass Effect 2 can be purchased for PC only, suggesting cloud-based gaming is not as completely platform agnostic as we thought (though it's possible the reason for this is legal, rather than technological). Here's that footnote: "You must redeem the free game coupon code within 30 days of Service activation while connected to the Service. Once the coupon code is redeemed, the game is accessible on the Service through the end of your 12-month free membership offer. OnLive cannot guarantee that you will receive our emails, or that your computer, Internet connection or location will enable you to connect, or to continue to connect, to the Service. Offer only valid within the contiguous United States and is not transferable. Game purchases are only available on the PC and Mac. Please note, Mass Effect 2 is only available for purchase on Windows-based PCs. It is not available for purchase on the Mac. Details of game availability for the MicroConsoleTM TV Adapter will be announced at a later date."

Trine 2 Announced

Atlus U.S.A. announces Trine 2, saying Frozenbyte's action/platformer sequel is due via digital distribution in Spring 2011, and while target platforms are not being announced, Frozenbyte's Joel Kinnunen has already indicated the PC will be one of them. Word is the game will include cooperative multiplayer: "Trine 2 takes the first game's beloved triad-the powerful knight, the swift rogue, and the crafty wizard-and puts them into an all-new adventure filled with more action, more puzzles, and the introduction of online support for the series's popular cooperative 3-person gameplay." The Trine 2 Teaser Website is online, offering a teaser trailer and some screenshots.

Rock of Ages Announced

Atlus and ACE Team announce Rock of Ages, an action/strategy game where players must destroy an opposing castle by rolling gigantic boulders at them, while simultaneously defending their own castle from enemy boulders. "A rock-solid combination of deep strategy, rock-rolling action, and captivating art and music from throughout history, Rock of Ages delivers incredibly satisfying castle-crashing gameplay with a look and feel that's much more than a stone's throw from the competition," stated Aram Jabbari, Manager of PR and Sales at Atlus. "Truly, the satisfaction felt when successfully crushing your opponent's intricate defenses with your gigantic siege stone, seeing their forces driven from before you and hearing the lamentation of their citizens, has no equal. Multiplayer support means you can compete against a friend. Will the end of the battle find you yelling 'I rock,' or will you be crying out 'no moss' instead?" The game will be released next year via digital distribution, and while platforms will be announced soon, preliminary Rock of Ages Website is online with a trailer and screenshots suggesting a Windows version.

Out of the Blue

I picked up a 20 lb bag of birdseed at the supermarket since it was extra cheap. A couple of days after, I happened to look out the window, and see the bag right where I had put it in the back yard, testimony to my failure to put it away as planned. Of course the scene wasn't as simple as that, as there were birds picking at what was scattered about by the squirrel sitting on a huge mountain of birdseed like Scrooge McDuck on a pile of gold. Everybody seemed so pleased with this situation that I just decided to leave things be, and will just clean up the aftermath when the seed has all been eaten. I just hope that squirrel is still able to walk by that time, because he's looking pretty fat.
