Out of the Blue

We headed out to the car this morning to shuttle MrsBlue to the train station when I learned what should have been an obvious lesson about the doggies. They usually come along for the ride, and we just walk to the car together, so occasionally the dogs trot off to say hi to a neighbor if someone's about. Today out of nowhere a deer raced by, so the pups were off like a shot. I actually got Hudson the wonder dog to stop after 20 feet or so (by throwing my car keys near her, of all things, a technique I read in a training book that called it the "magic hand"), but the Gunnar-man is so fast he was out of sight before we knew it. A couple of minutes later he returned, but he probably crossed a half-dozen streets along the way. No need to scold me, as this was a clear illustration of the poor judgment I've been using all these years by not having the doggies secured when we walk to the car, which I will make a point of doing from now on.
