Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Server Fixes

A post to the Electronic Arts UK Forums by Barrie Tingle announces new Battlefield: Bad Company 2 server code is online to improve connectivity, and another update will follow to improve things even more (thanks LittleMe). Here's word:

We are sending out new servers to our providers called "R5". They will be testing them out and changing over the servers by tomorrow evening. This server contains some fixes for the "Connection to the server has been lost" message that a lot of you will have seen.

We are also working on making another new server over the weekend as EA has set up some dedicated front-end boxes just for Battlefield Bad Company 2 which we will update the server to use and should work to improve the stability of connections to EA for everyone.

A post to the Battlefield Blog follows up on the first update, saying: "We are aware of a number of remaining disconnect issues on PC and we have released the “R5” server to hosts yesterday to address some of the disconnects. We are continuing to work on the remaining disconnect issues to have a solution as fast as possible."

Monkey Island 2 Remake Plans?

Kotaku reports a rumor that a remake of Monkey Island 2 is on the way, attributing the report to "sources," and saying this may be officially announced as soon as next week's GDC. They say the game will get revamped graphics and audio, and while the remake of the first Monkey Island was only released for Windows, Xbox 360, and iPhone, the Monkey Island 2 remake is supposedly also coming to the PlayStation Network.

More PC BC2 Players Than on Either Console

Another post by Barrie "Bazajaytee" Tingle to the Electronic Arts UK Forums says there are more players playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on PC than on either console while also saying that connecting to servers with the in-game server browser should be addressed by the second of their two planned server updates (thanks LittleMe). Here's the story:

That is likely to be solved by the 2nd update when we can make use of the dedicated BFBC2 PC servers.

btw: PC currently has more people playing and are in game servers than both the consoles.

Noticed on Kotaku that this post was taken the wrong way. The PC had more players than either console not more than both consoles combined. You'll need to work to beat both consoles combined effort  =]

On a related note, the Battlefield Blog says: "Battlefield Bad Company 2 has managed to prove so popular that yesterday the concurrent users in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 surpassed that in Battlefield 2 which has been going strong for almost 5 years."

Field of Glory Patch

Matrix Games now offers a new patch for Field of Glory to update this turn-based strategy game from Slitherine Strategies to version 1.1.0. Word is: "Specific changes coming with the update include tweaks to rout and pursuit moves, several alterations to both how disorder is handled and displayed, minor bug fixes, and more." They strongly recommend that all customers install this update as it is required for multiplayer play, and it will also allow owners of Field of Glory to play against owners of the Rise of Rome expansion. The patch is available on this page.

Din's Curse Patches

New beta patches for Din's Curse are now available on the Soldak Entertainment Website to update the PC and Mac versions of their action/RPG to version 0.908. This page offers change notes on what's new and different.

Op Ed

IndustryGamers - Facebook Games from Zynga Are 'Parasitic.' By Alex St. John.
It is fair to say that with Facebook moving aggressively to contain the leak by preventing games from freely spamming their users that the halcyon days of “Social Gaming” (part 1) are nearly at an end, and the online game market will return to business as usual in which great, genuinely “social” games spread virally online without needing help from anybody and lesser titles will rely on buying advertising and doing distribution deals to reach their audiences. Even Zynga, having nearly outgrown its host organism will have to wean itself from dependence on Facebook and learn how to make games that people genuinely want to play and share with their friends voluntarily.

Gamasutra - The Psychology Of Games: The Glitcher's Dilemma. Thanks Joker961.
So what do you do? Psychologists and economists who study this kind of decision-making call it a "social dilemma." In these situations each person has what's called a "dominating" alternative where they're most likely to win (in this example, abusing the glitch) but most people REALLY want the "nondominating" alternative produced when everyone chooses to cooperate. Especially once the novelty factor wears off.

Out of the Blue

If you are seeing giant yellow headlines here instead of our normal headlines and their aesthetically pleasing blue hue, rest assured this is not some sort of insane redesign, but rather a side effect from us switching around a couple of settings in a style sheet. If you are getting the yellow headlines, you can fix this by forcing a refresh. On most browsers this will be a <shift> F5 (now I'm told that should be <control> F5).
