closed, though they do grant that most of their employees have been laid off.

San Francisco, CA (July 14, 2008) -- Flagship Studios has announced today
that despite rumors to the contrary, the company is still operating.
“It is with deep regret that I must announce that Flagship Studios has laid off
most employees. However, the core management and founding team members are still
at Flagship.” said Bill Roper, CEO of Flagship Studios. “The past five years
have been an incredible experience for us, but unfortunately, we couldn’t
sustain the size of the company any longer.”
Flagship Studios owns the rights to all its technology and IP, including
Hellgate: London and Mythos. Due to the current situation, Flagship will not be
taking any new subscribers for Hellgate: London, and all current subscriptions
will not be billed.
Flagship wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to those that have supported
the company and games over the past five years.

related to E3 media.

Capcom official announces Flock, though a preview ( story)
already revealed the existence of Proper Games' upcoming downloadable puzzle

the later game seems to be the inspiration for this flocking game: SAN
MATEO, Calif. — Jul 15, 2008 — Capcom® Entertainment, a leading worldwide
developer and publisher of video games, today announced Flock! (working title)
for PLAYSTATION®Network, Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and
entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows® PC. Developed by Proper
Games™, whose talented team members are known for their previous work on
Lemmings, Crackdown, and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Flock! is currently
scheduled for a downloadable release this Holiday season.
In Flock!, players take control of a UFO that has been given the challenge of
herding farm animals to its mothership through a variety of puzzle-filled
interactive levels, including corn fields, pastures and other “plushie”-like
environments. In order to succeed, players will have to manage the quirkiness of
the animal’s distinct behaviors, as well as solve a series of environmental
puzzles using Flock’s! physics-based gameplay. The animals that populate these
islands – sheep, chickens, pigs, cows and more – respond to the UFO in all kinds
of eccentric ways based on their nature. By finding or creating a passable route
across a level, players can herd the animals safely toward their ship. Solving
the puzzles within the suggested time limit yields exciting rewards, but players
can also take their time in order to find more hidden bonuses. With a unique
theme, clever humor and easy pick-up-and-play controls, Flock! promises to be an
instant hit with gamers of all ages!
Flock! uses a sophisticated physics engine that drives the challenging puzzle
elements of the game. Whether using the Tractor Beam to move obstacles out of
the way or the Depressor Beam to stamp out crop circles to guide your herds,
being an extraterrestrial has never been this fun! Friends will also be able to
join in on the animal herding adventures through co-op play. And when all the
levels have been completed, the journey is just getting started as users will be
able to make their own customized puzzle-filled levels using the level editor.
Flock! comes packed with so much content, the potential fun is out of this
world!

More on the id, EA Deal
on IGN elicits thoughts from id Software's John Carmack on id's publishing
deal with EA for Rage, their upcoming shooting/driving game. Word is: "This a
short-term deal based solely on Rage, but it's clear that both companies are
treating this as a test for possible future collaboration. David DiMartini, the
head of EA Partners, said that EA would love to publish future id games."
Carrying a slightly different tone
GameSpot's John Carmack Q&A
on the topic has a frank quote, indicating id had to overcome some rage against
the EA machine: "I'll admit that, if you asked me years ago, I still had
thoughts that EA was the Evil Empire, the company that crushes the small
studios...I'd have been surprised, if you told me a year ago that we'd end up
with EA as a publisher." He goes on to say it was talking to folks like Valve
that helped change their minds: "When we went out and talked to people,
especially EA Partners people like Valve, we got almost uniformly positive
responses from them." He goes on to point out that an EA Partners deal "isn't
really a publishing arrangement. Instead, they really offer a menu of
services--Valve takes one set of things, Crytek takes a different set, and we're
probably taking a third set." The GameSpot story links to their copy of the
Rage Trailer,
which can also be found on
GameTrailers and
Shacknews.
The E3 video for Mirror's Edge is now available, showing the acrobatic
Parkour moves and combat (as well as some odd transitions) from a first-person
perspective using in-game footage from DICE's upcoming action game. The movie
can be found on
ActionTrip,
FileFront, and Gamer's
Hell.

The Jumpgate
Evolution Intro Q&A on Gamer's Hell is a publisher distributed internal Q&A
about Jumpgate Evolution, the upcoming MMORPG revival. A general overview of the
project is provided, but there's a great moment at the end, where there's a
noncommittal answer to a question about the launch of beta testing, which make
you wonder why they asked themselves the question in the first place.
Day one or day two of E3, depending on your accounting. Today are press
conferences from Sony and Nintendo, so it may be that much more console-centric.
