Alone in the Dark Ships in EU; DRM Info

Infogrames announces Alone in the Dark is shipping to European stores for PC, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation2 (thanks Gamer's Hell). On a related note, TVG reports the game includes the reviled SecuROM DRM, which will require an internet connection to activate the game, though it does not seem that their implementation includes the phone home features or limited number of activations that were so controversial in Mass Effect and BioShock. Finally, Kotaku reports that some sites have been getting legal threats from Atari for early reviews of the game, saying that these must be from pirated copies, prompting speculation that this would not be such an issue if these reviews were more positive. Next Generation contacted Atari for comment on this, and received none.

Morning Q&As

  • PC Gaming Alliance
The PC Gaming Alliance Q&A on Big Download talks with Randy Stude, president of the advocacy group. Apparently piracy is one of the topics the group is looking to address: "Part of our research includes uncovering the size and scope of PC game piracy (as best possible). We have formed a working committee on piracy, however the charter for that group has yet to be determined. Basically, we are awaiting research results prior to coming out with a position or suggestions..."
  • Stardock
The Stardock Q&A on Big Download chats up Stardock CEO Brad Wardell on a variety of topics. Brad also touches on piracy, in case the above-mentioned PCGA committee is listening: "Definitely. Piracy is a major issue for the PC game industry. But the issue has to be kept in perspective – the people who actually buy games don't want to be inconvenienced or treated like a criminal. Everyone who buys games knows they could easily have gone out and stolen it if they wanted to. Customers expect to be treated with respect."

Out of the Blue

Hey, today is the first day of summer here in the US, while it's still spring in Europe until tomorrow. It seems like it's been summer for some time now, as I heard many references to it being summer all through the spring, perhaps because it's been so darned hot. And to those in the southern hemisphere, happy winter, I guess.
