Spider-Man: Web of
Shadows Announced on IGN has word on a new Spider-Man game in the works at
Shaba Games and Treyarch for PCs and consoles for release in the fall of this
year. They have a teaser trailer and some screenshots, and
this Yahoo! Games story about the game clarifies that this is purely based
on the comics and not the movie series (which is, of course, based on the
comics). Here's the bit from the IGN report that brings GTA to mind: Although
it wasn't ready to say too much about the action-adventure game, Activision did
tell us that Web of Shadows will be set in a free-roaming, open-ended New York
that combines web slinging with customizable superpowers. There will be the
traditional combo attacks on the ground, but the game will also feature a brand
new emphasis on vertical combat as gamers take Spidey to the skies and duke it
out with bad guys.
However, it might not just be foes who are getting socked in the jaw. According
to Activision, Spider-Man's latest adventure will let players choose how they
want to play -- if folks want to be the friendly neighborhood superhero, they
can, but they can also ignore missions and be the anti-hero who is only looking
out for himself. Marvel heroes and villains will pop up in the adventure, and
gamers will have the ability to change sides as they see fit.
The Gearbox Software
Community Portal offers a new Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway "face
stab" trailer showing off the upcoming World War II shooter sequel (thanks
Gamer's Hell). The game was announced with a Holiday 2006 release date
( story), which was later pushed back to Q1 2007
( story) before being postponed to sometime this year
( story). This trailer concludes by narrowing that release window
to August 2008, generously allowing us to once again roll out our joke about
release dates paving the highway to hell with good intentions. The trailer is
also available on Ubisoft's FTP directory
in .flv ( Flash) format.
Funcom
announces open beta testing for Age of Conan will commence through IGN
beginning May 1: Durham, USA – April 17th, 2008 – Funcom, Eidos and IGN
are proud to announce that Open Beta for Age of Conan will start on May 1. The
Open Beta will be hosted exclusively by IGN’s popular game download site,
FilePlanet.com, as well as being offered through partner IGN sites such as
Gamespy.com, Tentonhammer.com and Warcry.com. The application pages at
FilePlanet.com are now open for registrations, and gamers from across the world
can sign up. As 50.000 gamers prepare their Hyborian assault, rivers of blood
are about to flow, and it’s exclusively available through FilePlanet and IGN
partner sites.
“When we started development of Age of Conan four and a half years ago we truly
wanted to move away from the standards of the MMO genre. We wanted to bring
something new, exciting and fresh to the gamers,” said Gaute Godager, Game
Director on Age of Conan. “As we get ready to show everyone what Conan’s savage
world is all about, we need final stress testing. Teaming up with the Beta
Masters at IGN was a perfect opportunity for us! We simply couldn’t ask for a
better partner for this crucial stage of our Beta.” “The IGN and FilePlanet
audience has consistently told us that Age of Conan is one of their most
anticipated games of the year, and we are very pleased to partner with Funcom
and Eidos on the Open Beta,” says Senior Vice President of Consumer Products at
IGN, Jamie Berger. “The Funcom team has developed a truly unique, visceral
gaming experience that players will have to see to believe.”
Funcom would like to point out that the primary function of the Open Beta is to
stress test Age of Conan prior to launch. This means that Funcom will not make
the entire game available to the Open Beta testers, and a level 13 cap will be
applied. The Beta experience will still give hours and hours of entertainment,
and complete class and culture variety, while at the same time giving Funcom the
needed focus for an Open Beta.
You are required to be a FilePlanet member in order to sign up for the Open
Beta. Preloading of the client will start prior to the launch of the Open Beta,
and applicants will receive more information should they receive a beta key. The
Open Beta will start on the 1st of May at 1500 GMT / 0900 EST.
id Software's Kevin
Cloud Talks QUAKE Wars, id Tech 5 on Shacknews talks with the id Software
lead artist and co-owner about the aforementioned topics. Here's a bit of his
answer about Tech 5, id's next game engine: Things are moving along great.
We're currently preparing it for licensors to take a look at it, and it's in a
good position. The SDKs have to be put together obviously can't just put
together the code and have them figure it out. There's work done on that level.
I don't want to step outside of my range and discuss things that some people are
better suited to answer, but right now with the type of technology solution
we've developed for id Tech 5--for one thing, it's a great cross-platform
solution because texture streaming solutions just allows you to create one set
of content.
Tiscali Games has
ShakyCam™ videos showing off a presentation of ArmA II by Bohemia
Interactive at an event to show off their military shooter sequel. The quality
of the clips shot off the monitors is so-so, as is the audio, but the developer
commentary is in English (the site itself is Czech), so if you are interested in
this game, your patience with these shortcomings should be rewarded.
PotBS Server Mergers Explained on WarCry Network tracks down Flying Lab
Software CEO Russell Williams to learn the reason seven of the eleven Pirates
of the Burning Sea servers are being closed ( story). While
Russell admits the game's Spanish launch was disappointing, he is otherwise
upbeat about the game's reception, saying the server closures are because they
erred on the side of over-capacity for launch, though he does refer to strategic
imbalances that result in low population density, and kicks off the conversation
by admitting this about the sudden move: "Companies are so afraid of any
negative publicity that they basically wait until the game is on life support."

The CITIES XL Website is online as home
to a new urban planning simulation from Monte Cristo that they plan to release
sometime next year. The site offers newsletter sign-ups, game information and
screenshots. Here's the announcement: PARIS, France. April 17, 2008 -
Monte Cristo is pleased to announce CITIES XL™ for Windows today. In this
next-generation take on the city building genre, realism will be pushed to the
limit with cities that are bigger, more realistic and more sophisticated than
ever before. CITIES XL™ will expand upon all the features that make city
builders fun and interesting, while also letting players take their game online,
as they interact with others in a massive online environment.
CITIES XL™ allows gamers to develop cities on realistic 3D maps using an
incredible collection of unique structures and monuments based on American,
Asian and European-influenced architectural styles. The maps feature a variety
of environments: mountains, hills, canyons, beaches and islands, all set in
different climates from tropical to desert, Mediterranean to temperate. Players
must create the right combinations of social services, leisure activities,
special events and other job opportunities within their cities in order to feed,
clothe, employ and entertain their citizens. Be it planning and building a new
zoo, public park, residential neighborhood or transit system - there's always a
fresh and exciting challenge for would-be city managers and mayors in CITIES
XL™.
"We believe that the level of detail and realism brought to CITIES XL™ answers
the needs of city-builder fans," said Jérôme Gastaldi, COO of Monte Cristo. "We
believe fans of the genre will definitely enjoy CITIES XL™ and many of those
fans have provided us with feedback on our development so far. We are really
proud to have such a cool and proactive community."
The game's online features and services will allow players to create
interconnected cities on virtual and persistent planets. Mayors can share and
trade with one another, specialize their economy and team up with befriended
cities to create sprawling metropolises. Life on the planet will be punctuated
by events and competitions - a concert held in one town may, for example, be
attended by visitors from other areas who can also enjoy a walk around the city
to admire the urban creations of multiple players. By combining a fantastic
single-player game with the social and multiplayer aspects of an MMO, CITIES XL™
will shape the future of the genre by offering more variety, bigger cities and
multiple gameplay layers.
For more information about CITIES XL™, which will ship in 2009, please join the
continuously growing community at

Thomas Vu explores Spore on Play.TM
chats with the producer on Spore, EA's upcoming evolutionary adventure
game: "Taking a microscopic cell and evolving it into an intergalactic
space-faring race, while interacting with thousands of creations along the way
is conceptually a monumental undertaking. Ultimately, Spore is going to be
consumed by the fans, and the fans and the community will be apart of its
evolution and development, populating and pollinating each others’ universes and
also ours."
