Life in the FASA Lane

The Smith & Tinker Website has word that FASA founder Jordan Weisman has founded a new company called Smith & Tinker (named after a pair of characters from the Land of Oz series who never actually appear in any of the books) and licensed the "electronic entertainment rights" from Microsoft for FASA properties such as MechWarrior, Shadowrun, and Crimson Skies (thanks Gamasutra). It's not clear what limitations these rights may carry, and the announcement (which is dated back in October) promises surprises:

Smith & Tinker is pleased to announce that it has licensed from Microsoft the electronic entertainment rights for Mr. Weisman's previous creations of MechWarrior, Shadowrun, Crimson Skies and the other properties of the FASA catalog. We’re not quite ready to announce our plans for each property, but please be assured that our goal is to surprise and delight old fans, while welcoming new fans to these fantastic worlds.

EVE Online Installer Fixed

CCP has issued a statement about problems with the Trinity update for EVE Online (story), saying they have cleared up the issue:

Reykjavik, Iceland - December 6, 2007 -EVE Online: Trinity was released for download at 22:00 GMT on Tuesday, December 5. Shortly after the deployment of the update, CCP became aware of an issue involving the Premium graphics content download whereby a small percentage of our users may have been affected and now need to make repairs to system files. Users who are running Microsoft Windows versions other than Vista, with multiple hard drives (or multiple partitions on any hard drive) and began downloading the Premium graphics content before 04:00 GMT on Wednesday, December 6, should visit this link and follow the instructions given to correct any potential system issues.

Berlin, 06.12.2007: Starting today, it’s even easier to become a world famous pirate, explore the seven seas and collect treasures beyond imagination in the award-winning MMORPG Bounty Bay Online. Also starting today, the first free add-on for Bounty Bay Online called “Storm Island” is available. This add-on will be included in the content update applied automatically when the players log in. It contains a new tropical island close to the North American coast. There, evil creatures wait guarding precious treasures.

Serious EVE Online WinXP Issue

The EVE Online Forums report one of the editions of the new Trinity update for EVE Online is corrupting user's Windows XP installations. The patch offers three (a trinity) of variants, and those updating to the Premium client from the Classic client may end up with a corrupted "boot.ini." They say they are working on the issue, and in the meantime offer a description of the problem and possible workarounds:

Please do not reboot your computer without reading this information and determining if your system might be affected.

(Note that Windows Vista is not affected)

If you are only using the Classic client or installed the Premium client using the full Premium installer than you are not affected.

If you upgraded from the Classic client to the Premium client, using the content upgrade, then please read on.

Check the root directory of your hard drive and see if you have a boot.ini file, if so then you are not affected. The file is normally hidden so you need to click Tools : Folder Options : View and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" to be able to see it.

You can also check for the presence of this file by clicking Start : Control Panel : System : Advanced : Startup and Recovery : Settings (third button down). Windows will alert you if the boot.ini file is missing.

If there is no file then please read the following articles:

More information can also be found here.

We are working on a solution for this and will have more information as soon as it's ready.

Out of the Blue

I guess we can't be surprised that Hudson the wonder dog gets so itchy this time of year after receiving her test results. It turns out our Airedale is allergic to dust/mold, grass/pollen, and trees. This basically means she's allergic both outdoors and indoors, but vacuum sealing her should take care of everything. My brother points out this is borderline irony, as we selected Hudson's breed because MrsBlue is allergic to dogs.
