GameSpot Follow-up

Joystiq offers brief comments from GameSpot to speculation that a lukewarm review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men triggered the firing of longtime editor Jeff Gerstmann (story). The statement does not actually speak directly to this case, as they say "it is CNET Networks' policy not to comment on the status of its employees, current of [sic] former." They do, however, defend their editorial integrity in a more general sense, saying: "For over a decade, Gamespot and the many members of its editorial team have produced thousands of unbiased reviews that have been a valuable resource for the gaming community. At CNET Networks, we stand behind the editorial content that our teams produce on a daily basis."

Harvey Smith "Resigns"

Shacknews has word that designer Harvey Smith is no longer at Midway Austin. At first it was unclear whether this parting of the ways occurred before or after his recent statements blasting the production of BlackSite: Area 51 (story), but a subsequent follow-up indicates he was indeed still with Midway when he criticized his own game, but that a Midway executive (originally mistakenly indentified by Shacknews as CTO Michael Weilbacher in a reference that has since been corrected) allegedly referred to Smith's outburst as "his public resignation."

GameSpot Editor Fired Over Review?

Primotech reports the firing of Jeff Gerstmann, long-time GameSpot editor, saying sources close to the situation indicate this due to his tepid review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men for Xbox 360, pointing out Eidos had invested in a prominent advertising campaign on the site. The article points out this Penny Arcade comic offering a typically searing take on the situation, along with another indication this unconfirmed story is making the rounds. A later update on DESTRUCTOID reports the departure of GameSpot editor Tim Tracy though it's not clear if or how this may relate to the situation described above.
