Ghostbusters Announcement

This press release is the horse that follows the cart of all the Ghostbusters game information from the past couple of days by providing the official announcement of the project, which is due next fall:

Reading, uk (16th November, 2007) – Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, announced today development of Ghostbusters™ The Video Game, based on the classic films that have transcended and entertained generations of audiences. To deliver a special gaming experience to the tremendous Ghostbusters’ fan base around the world, the game will feature the original film cast from the classic Ghostbusters films, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, back again for the first time in more than 20 years. Supporting the ghost busting crew are the talents of Annie Potts, Brian Doyle Murray and William Atherton. Equipped with a variety of unique weapons and gadgets, players will hunt, fight and capture a wide range of supernatural villains in a funny and frightening battle to save New York City from its latest paranormal plague.

Ghostbusters The Video Game, is expected to ship fall 2008.

"Sierra Entertainment is extremely excited to not only deliver fans, old and new, this next chapter in the Ghostbusters universe, but to allow them inside the universe for the first time," said Martin Tremblay, president, Worldwide Studios for Sierra Entertainment. "Our collaboration alongside Terminal Reality and Red Fly Studios also includes working closely with the team at Sony Pictures Consumer Products. Together we will create the ultimate Ghostbusters experience, full of the characters, ghosts and other paranormal creatures so many have come to adore over the years."

“Ghostbusters is one of Sony Picture's most valued film franchises,” said Mark Caplan, vice president, Hardlines for Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “In setting out to develop a game, our criterion was to find a game company who was interested in keeping true to the Ghostbusters world that talent and filmmakers had originally created. The team at Sierra Entertainment took the time to prove to us they had what it takes. From the moment we green-lit the game, we have certainly seen a lot of passion and commitment coming from Sierra Entertainment and both development teams. Fans are going to be impressed with the game's ability to deliver a very authentic Ghostbusters experience, as well as its capacity to blow out the Ghostbusters universe to new heights.”

Like the films before it, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis will return to scribe the script and event-driven storyline for the video game that will lead the player through the trials and tribulations of the world’s leading paranormal ghost busting team. Ghostbusters The Video Game will create a totally unique experience and gameplay environment that authentically recreates the whimsical time period of the film, expanding the lore and supernatural events that seemingly plague New York City.

Ships Ahoy - Beowulf

Ubisoft announces the availability of Beowulf, the action game based on the movie of the same name, which is hitting the big screen today:

SAN FRANCISCO – November 16, 2007 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced that Beowulf(TM), the action combat game based on Paramount Pictures' and Shangri-La Entertainment's Beowulf, the upcoming feature film from Academy Award®-winning director Robert Zemeckis, is now available on store shelves.

"Today is an exciting day for Ubisoft as we launch the Beowulf video game alongside the release of the Beowulf movie,” stated Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. "Working closely with Paramount Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment has allowed us to breathe new life into this ancient tale, creating an amazing gaming experience that will extend Beowulf's adventures for fans of both the epic poem and the new feature film.”

The Beowulf video game is an interactive experience that captures the spirit and artistic beauty of the film while offering an even deeper look into the epic tale of Beowulf. The video game, developed by the award-winning team that created the original Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter® in Ubisoft's Tiwak studio, features exclusive content that is unexplored by both the film and the classic tale, extending the adventure through 30 years of the Beowulf story.

"The Beowulf video game extends and complements the motion picture experience beyond the silver screen,” said Sandi Isaacs, senior vice president interactive and mobile for Paramount Pictures. "Our goal has always been to provide fans with authentic and compelling game play timed to coincide with the opening of our film, and this game delivers on this promise.”

Key features:

+ Players will delve even deeper into the adventure as they play through 30 years of the Beowulf story not seen in the movie to experience more of Beowulf's life and mold their own legacy.
+ An authentic adaptation of the film, which includes the voices and likeness of Academy Award®-winner Anthony Hopkins as King Hrothgar, Ray Winstone as Beowulf, Brendan Gleeson as Wiglaf and Sebastien Roche as Wulfgar.
+ The mystical world of Beowulf comes to life in stunning fashion. Powered by the next evolution of the award-winning YETI technology used to create the critically acclaimed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, Beowulf delivers an unrivalled graphical experience.
+ Players unlock an army of up to 12 Thanes to unlock as they increase their heroic experience. Players use the Thane army to their advantage by giving orders, triggering in-game mechanisms, assigning strategic positions and tailoring upgradeable weapons to the situation or enemy.
+ Carnal Power allows the use of grapple attacks for visceral hand-to-hand combat and special weapons. Players use legacy experience points for Carnal upgrades resulting in increasingly fierce action and brutal attacks.
+ Dynamic combat system including advanced combos, skilful parries and increased battle proficiency as the player progresses.

The Beowulf video game is available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft (MSRP: $59.99), the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system (MSRP: $59.99), the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system (MSRP: $39.99) and Windows PC (MSRP: $49.99). The game is rated "M” for Mature by the ESRB.

Pushing the PC gaming boundaries is a BBC news article about the state of PC gaming (thanks Mike Martinez). The article discusses the power advantage of top-end PCs versus the current crop of consoles as well as the price disadvantage this power carries. Gold Farming & Child Abuse?

The implosion of high-flying Web startup DEN on Radar Online (thanks Mike Martinez and Boing Boing) is an article primarily focusing on the dramatic failure of DEN, an online media company that could be a poster-child for whole the "dot-bomb" era. Included are tales of wasted investor's money, and far more disturbing, allegations of a pattern of sexual abuse of young people. The story details some of the legal wrangling this all inspired, which included a number of lawsuits that have yet to be paid off. The story makes a case for the theory that DEN founder Marc Collins-Rector is avoiding paying out millions of dollars in civil judgments by hiding his interest in IGE, the much reviled firm that specializes in virtual item and currency sales related to online games.

Stranger Patch

A new patch for Stranger is now available from Empire Interactive Support. Ships Ahoy - UK rFactor

rFactor - Racing into stores this week is the press release announcing that this racing simulator is now available in the UK:

Sniper and Image Space Incorporated are pleased to announce that, from today, rFactor is available in UK stores.

rFactor offers the latest in vehicle and race customization, advanced graphics, and the height of racing realism. Developed by the creators of EA's Formula 1 and NASCAR Thunder series, and also Sports Car GT (SCGT), rFactor provides unprecedented flexibility, allowing the series to grow and evolve with mod community involvement, race club formation, and feedback from users worldwide.

The new boxed version of rFactor includes a completely new multiplayer engine, built-in race statistics and friends list, dedicated server, and built-in IRC chat. Developer Pete Knepley says "Factor is built to last. People still play SCGT and F1C, they will still be playing rFactor for years, I want them to be able to have internet matchmaking forever… My solution to matchmaking was to write a lightweight application that could be easily deployed. It runs the server listings and friends listings with minimal processor, memory and bandwidth usage. … This was a hardcore multithreaded server app that is the cornerstone to internet play for possibly thousands of players at once. It took several prototypes and a couple full rewrites to get it to production quality."

The rFactor series features mixed class road racing with ultra realistic dynamics, an immersive sound environment and stunning graphics. rFactor is the racing game you want to play, and will be available on DVD-ROM from the 16th November 2007.

Out of the Blue

Okay, here's my response to xXBatmanXx's homework assignment from the forum yesterday. A perfect cup of coffee is easy to accomplish. Start with clean, filtered water and fresh (whole) beans roasted to taste. Grind the beans in a burr grinder (not one of those cheapie blade choppers). The generally accepted formula is a tablespoon of grounds per cup, but this is a matter of taste, as is how coarsely you grind the coffee (I make incredibly strong coffee myself, so I use a lot of French roast beans and a fine grind). Boil the water, and make the coffee in a simple Melitta cone (give the water a couple of seconds to come off the boil before pouring), which has all the functionality of a coffee maker with none of the dirt, calcium, and bacteria traps. Transfer the outcome to a thermal carafe, and it will be hot and fresh for several hours. Enjoy your coffee.
